TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder) Pain ! HELP !?

I was diagnosed with TMJ about a year ago.
It started off painless and just popped when I opened my mouth.
But since a couple of months ago, it has been getting worse and worse.
It is agony when when I:
Yawn
Sneeze
Eat
Sleep
Even opening my mouth hurts !
The doctors gave me a night guard to wear every night, i didn't wear it at first as it was uncomfortable and i didn't have any pain but now i wear it every night because I have no choice.
The doctors discharged me as they couldn't do anything else for me.
I have been referred back by my dentist what else can the doctors do to help me?
How can I numb the pain for the meantime, I have tryed paracetamol, ibuprofen and ibuleve gel, nothing seems to help is there anything stronger i can have?

Thanks so much in advance.

I as well have TMJ i had it so severe at one time it was involving my hearing where the swelling in my Jaw got so bad i lost a unknown % of my hearing each time.
I recomend a moist heating pador hot water bottle laying it for 10 - 15 minutes every evening before sleep on each side, It help as well as taking the recomended dosing of medicine.

the key is to not let the pain get unbarable is the medicine start working don't stop even if you start feeling better unless otherwise noted by your dr.

When you stop a pain med you let the pain build up so termindious that you can't feel an confort no matter what you do...

I do pray you feel beter soon and get the pain undercontol listen to your dr.s is the key thing.

Mine was so bad i had an overbite (Bone Structure deformity) where they finaly decided to break my jaw and bring it forward. It has felped me alot. but i still have problems just not as bad.  (+ info)

TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)?

I believe I suffer from TMJD although i'm not completely sure. About 3 years ago I fell while ice skating directly on my jaw and from the impact i suppose my jaw popped out of place. It clicks when i open my mouth and clicks back when i close it. For the first year or so only the right side of my jaw clicked and then I was able to also pop out the left side as well.

I was experiencing pain so I went to see a doctor and I was given a night-guard to stop the grinding of teeth during the night. The pain quickly subdued within 4-5 nights and I felt no pain ever since. I stopped using the night guard because i think the molding wasn't done right and my teeth felt crooked in the morning.

Right now i feel no pain when it clicks but I dont want to live my whole life in this condition and I don't know what to do about it. I'm ready to do a surgery to fix it but I dont know if the case is severe to that point. If I do indeed need a surgery i'm worried if itll leave any marks on my skin.

I've done research and it appears that people live in this condition for years without problem but I fear the wearing of the jaw will continue and it will just get worse and worse. Please help me out.

You do have TMD and the trauma to your jaw is apparently the cause. You are correct in that many TMJ sufferers can lead normal lives without any treatment although it may be painful or very uncomfortable to do so. TMD is like arthritis and affects different people differently. Some people can be made to feel like committing suicide because of the severity of the TMJ pain and others may only feel nothing more than an annoying clicking or popping.

The night guard worked for you because when worn it prevented your teeth from coming together thereby preventing the articular disk from being dislocated. The articular disk is a fibrous cushion located on top of the jaw joint (condyle) that functions to allow the mouth to open properly (more than 3 fingers wide). Whenever this disk becomes forced out of place (overbite, trauma to the head, bad bite) the jaw will not be able to open wide and will feel like it binds or gets stuck. It is unfortunate that most dentists only know how to treat TMJ by having a patient wear a splint (aka night guard). TMJ can be effectively treated using functional orthodontics so that a splint is no longer needed. Otherwise wearing a splint 24/7 for life is the only solution to keep the jaws working properly.

DO NOT HAVE SURGERY under any circumstances. Surgery will permanently ruin your jaw joints and they will never function normally again. Your condition can be easily treated non surgically. Also, do not go to a traditional orthodontist because most do not know how to treat TMJ disorders.  (+ info)

You're on about the strongest pain relief most doctors would ever prescribe as a regular medication. There are danger limits. You'll need to get a referral again for the specialist,or maybe see if he'll recommend another one. The tooth grinding is very common, and it's good to know you're using a shield. Some foods can help with pain...garlic and onion, chewing parsley, and of course, cloves. Maybe you're going to need some surgery, but it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what the cause is,so the surgeons could be stumped. If it's mainly a nerve-related pain, there's not a lot they can do,except more painkillers. Tough one.  (+ info)

I have TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder) what should i do? Should i go to the dentist or not?

I dont think it was the braces that changed my bite because this was suppose to be my last month. And i have headaches, earaches, and i cannot chew or open my mouth.
ok here is the thing i am in mexico and i dont go back to the united states until august 5. I have TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder) and my bite got displaced. I would go to the dentist but i wear braces and go to the dentist monthly in the US. My problem is i dont know if I should go to the dentist since i have no dental record with me. Or should I wait till I get back to thee United States.

there is an exercise where you push your tongue up on the roof your mouth as hard as you can just behind your front teeth. This releases some tmj pressure.

There are mouth guards (bite guard) that you can buy in the drug store to make a bite guard to wear at night so that you can have something to use until you get home. It looks like the plastic thing boxers have in their mouth to protect them. You can also use advil or something like soma (otc in mexico) to get the pain to be less.

In a short time you can see the regular dentist and tell them what is happening.  (+ info)

could I be getting Temporomandibular Joint disorder? But i already have gastritis!?

I got gastritis 2 weeks ago. I seem to have it under control now and I'm taking omeprazole every morning. Sometimes I might get a little weird stomach feeling, and when that happens I cry. I don't cry because it hurts, I don't even feel pain at all. I cry because it somewhat annoys me and I don't like it.
The last time I cried was last night, and while I was crying I tried opening my mouth but my left jaw felt tight and as I opened my mouth it made a cracking sound. What's weird is it came back later this morning and the whole day my left jaw feels weird and sometimes it still makes a cracking sound when I try opening my mouth wide.

I recall this jaw thing happening twice before but it was only once and it never came back. But could it be a change in my diet? Since the gastritis, I've been eating only: whole grain wheat bread, baked potato, thin turkey breast, skinless cooked chicken, and burnt tortillas, and I only drink water. I tried cooked carrot today. The doctor also recommended me to take some probiotics a few days ago. I stay away from dairy products since the "low moisture part skim mozzarella cheese" I ate last week upset my stomach a bit.
I'm a 17 year old girl btw.

can i use a tens machine to relieve temporomandibular joint dysfunction?

You MUST know the correct position of the pads.
Once you have them in place - start with a low voltage and work up to a tolerant level.
Do not use for an extended length of time as you may do permanent damage to the joint.

Good news - you WILL feel relief......  (+ info)

II don't know about the symptoms and such but standing up and getting dizzy/not being able to see is headrush and has nothing to do with any type of disorder.  (+ info)

I think I have Temporomandibular joint disorder?

Every time I open my mouth slightly wide, even when I yawn, I can feel my jaw cracking..I don't know if cracking is a right word, what happens is that I hear a popping sound and I feel like my jaw dislocated. It doesn't hurt one bit, but its really bothering me.

I went to my dentist a few days back and I asked him about this, but he didn't pay much attention...When he was fixing some issues with my teeth, he said my lower set of teeth are not properly aligned with my upper set of teeth because when I swallow, my tongue does not push against the ceiling of my mouth but pushes my upper set of teeth which is pushing it outward and in front of the lower jaw. He also said that it could turn into a major problem when I grow up and I need to practice swallowing properly with my tongue, but its hard to keep track of this every time i swallow and I feel its uncomfortable. Could my jaw problem having anything to do with this?

Please tell me what the problem is and what I should do about it.

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate it. :)

Does any one suffer from TMJ (aka) Temporomandibular joint disorder?, it really sucks : (?

O.K., so I've had this glorious TMJ problem for about 3 years now and any one who has TMJ knows that you can sometimes have a handful of months where you don't notice the symtoms at all then you have months where you feel like the symptoms are maxed out. I guess my question is "for those of you who have TMJ, what kinds of things do you feel when the symptoms are the worst, and what do you guys do in order to feel normal again?" Do any of you get supper dizzy and even nauseous? The muscles in my jaw feel so freaking tight, I'm going crazy, HELP!!
----------

I'm not a doctor, but I have done research and trial and error for years. I am 35 and I've had this problem since 5th grade.

I never had months where I didn't notice the symptoms until recently. I have severe pain in my jaw which radiates to my temple, cheeks, neck, the base of my skull, my shoulders, and all the way down to my thoracic spine. The pain is awful.

I know you didn't ask about it, but you could think of it at some point. If I were you, I would NOT NOT NOT have TMJ surgery. Google it. Research it. First of all, most insurance companies will not pay for it. Secondly, in a huge number of cases, the surgery makes the problem WORSE, not better. I knew a nurse who assisted in those surgeries. She said in almost all cases that she assisted on, the problem intensified. She also said that the surgery and recovery is brutal and she wouldn't suggest doing it at all. They unhinge your face .. literally ..

I can tell you that I have recently discovered two remedies that are amazing. The pain is reduced considerably, actually almost completely.

I oil pull with UNrefined, cold pressed sesame oil at least 2 times a day. I felt relief after the FIRST pull. Here is information about that:

http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=109186#i

Here is info and instructions on how to oil pull. The only thing I would add is that you should brush your teeth both before and after oil pulling. Also if you try this, don't spit the oil down the sink; it's awful for your pipes. I spit it in empty plastic bottles and then toss them.

http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/oil_pulling.html

The other thing I do which gives even more relief is found here:

http://www.wikihow.com/Alleviate-TMJ

It sounds crazy, but it helps more than you can imagine and the results are immediate. You can literally feel the sensation or relief within minutes.

I know both suggestions seem nuts. I thought so too. Here is the thing: it won't cost much to try it and I promise you that you will get relief. If you're in as much pain as I was, you'll try anything anyway.

Good luck.
