Tetanus...?

I stepped in a nail about 3 weeks ago. got the tetanus shot 4 hours afterwards. but then someone told me it takes a couple ofdays before the body makes antibodies. OK,well the doctors assured me i wont get tetanus, but i dont know....

ive been dealing with a lot of symptoms i believe i may have some autoimmune disorder to begin with but when i got the tetanus shot all hell broke loose. im getting leg spasms, finger spasms, my jaw is sore, i feel numb all over, im getting small tiny chest and abdomen spasming, my arms are spasming, like little vibrations. my jaw even feels like its spasming its starting to click everytime i open it. should i go to ER
its also hard to swallow,and im getting tongue spasms
I would say go to the ER immediately. It is very unlikely that you have tetanus, however your symptoms do resemble tetanus, which is life-threatening. At the very least you seem to be having some kind of adverse reaction to the innoculation, and you should go to the ER immediately to have yourself checked out. I had an injury with a reasonable risk of tetanus and I decided to wait and see what happened. I think I am developing symptoms now and I read "There is no "cure" for tetanus once a person develops symptoms, just supportive treatment and management of complications." If this is true and I have already started developing symptoms what are my chances of survival? I read it has a high mortality rate and now I am worried. Also what could I experience and is there a recovery period?

I am not conversant with inoculation procedures in Thailand. If your aupair has any documentation to back up her claim of previous inoculation, maybe it would indicate. If it is of any great importance, the nearest Embassy or Consulate would very likely be able to ascertain the details. I will discuss a brief history of the anti tetanus regimes. The first tetanus toxoid (inactivated toxin) was produced in 1924 and was used successfully to prevent tetanus in the armed services during World War II. In the mid-1940s, tetanus vaccine was combined with diphtheria toxoid and inactivated pertussis vaccine to make the combination DTP vaccine for routine childhood immunization. In 2005, two new tetanus toxoid and diphtheria toxoids with acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) products were licensed. These vaccines are the first pertussis-containing vaccines that can be given to persons older than 7 years. The vaccine is a toxoid, meaning it is a toxin that has been inactivated, and has demonstrated safety in numerous clinical trials.

NOTE.
As tetanus is a bacterium, "Andrew" above, may be correct in prescribing an antibiotic, but only for an infection. And then in conjunction with magnesium, as an intravenous (IV) infusion, to prevent muscle spasm, human tetanus immunoglobulin injected intrathecally, which increases clinical improvement from 4% to 35%. I shall be in trepidation of any medical treatment if I return to N.Y. if "Andrew" is an example of their prowess!

I got tetanus shot Saturday and my arm is incredibly sore I can't lay on it or move it a whole lot is this normal? If so how long should I expect to feel like this. Thanks.
If you bumped it or were really active after getting it that could be why. I don't know much about the shot but when I had my last one senior year I had a soccer game the same day. Some people can run a marathon after the shot others feel sick with no activity whatsoever. When I was little and had one I didn't do much of anything and my arm ached. That last time I was fine for the soccer game even after being knocked all over the place then the next day just the spot where I got the shot was a little sore. If the pain lasts much longer I would call the doctor and see what he or she thinks before rushing in to emergency. Hope everything turns out normal.  (+ info)

Excuse me. Tetanus toxoid vaccines are administered before the fact as well as after. And should be updated every 10 years. Tetanus immune globulin is not a vaccine.

And the rabies vaccine can be administered prophylactically as well. It's an expensive vaccine given in a series so it's not often given as a prophylaxis unless there's a good reason for it.

The main difference between the two vaccines is that one is for tetanus and the other for rabies. Clostridium tetani antigen is an active ingredient in the tetanus vaccine. The rabies vaccine has the viral component fixed-virus strain Flury LEP and the antibiotics neomycin, chlortetracycline, and amphotericin B as active ingredients.  (+ info)

I had to get a tetanus shot on Thursday and was just wondering how long my arm is going to hurt like it does. It's quite sore to the touch and still seems swollen. Thanks.
Usually it's tender for 2-3 days. Place a warm towel near the area you had the shot. Also, take some Tylenol or Motrin to help alleviate some of the pain. I hate those TD shots, I actually hate needles so any shot is scary to me.  (+ info)
