If you have diabetic neuropathy, does it mean you have diabetes?

I just started showing symptoms of toe neuropathy and I have found out that the biggest reason for it is diabetic neuropathy. I am 20 and do not think I have diabetes, but if I have this condition, does that mean I do?
----------

If your doctor told you that you have neuropathy, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's diabetic neuropathy. Neuropathy can be present without you being diabetic.

Can I suggest you read the following Fact Sheet on peripheral neuropathy ... which is the type of neuropathy that's present in your toes. It gives details of some of the other conditions that can cause this type of neuropathy.

Can I also suggest that you ask your doctor why you've got it, what the implications are, and how it can be treated. This is what your doctor is paid for.  (+ info)

Is diabetic neuropathy fully curable when blood sugar is in control?

If blood sugar is in controll is diabetic neuropathy is fully curable or not.
I mean the pains in legs & hands come down permanently else they will be still there.

My blood sugar is in control but i am overweight ,i have still pains and burning sense in my hands and legs often though it has come down alot from before.
----------

Radha K,
Diabetic neuropathy is the impairment or damage of nerve function due to increased blood sugars. If the neuropathy involves the sensory nerves it will lead to either a loss of feeling or you may experience constant pain, burning and/or tingling. If the nerves involved are motor nerves it will affect the strength of the muscle leading to weakness and loss of use. Diabetic neuropathies can be classified as focal or diffuse and each has their own symptoms, rate of progress, and method of treatment. Focal neuropathies involve a single nerve or a small group of nerves that become damaged due to loss of blood supply or it may become trapped within swollen tissues. Diffuse neuropathies are the more common type of diabetic neuropathy. They affect both motor and sensory nerves, involve a widespread loss of nerve function and affect both sides of the body at the same time. They are usually gradual in onset and unfortunately they are not reversible or curable. Keeping your blood glucose levels within the range recommended by your doctor or endocrinologist is the best way to delay the beginning and decrease the severity of diabetic neuropathies. It would be of obvious benefit if you were able to reduce your weight. This may be done in conjunction with your doctor and, if you have one, fitness advisor.

Is it when People suffered from Peripheral Neuropathy which the causes is from Diabetes?

What is the Common age that most people get Peripheral Neuropathy?
----------

Diabetic Peripherl Neuropathy has nothing to do with age.

It is totally dependent on how long your diabetes has been out of control.
It also depends on how BADLY your diabetes is out of control.

Peripheral neurpothay is the reason most people go to the doctror for diabetes in the first place. It is the first symptom of diabetes that hurts.

According to the Americian Diabetes Associatiaons, most people who are diagnosed with type 2 Diabates have had the disease 5-7 years before they do anything about it. So if you are diagnoses diabetic at age 37, you probably had blood sugar problems starting when you were about 30-32 yeas old.

And is it not just the periphery (fingers and toes) that are affected. In sever cases the whole arm and leg goes numb. The optic nerve can be affected, causing blindness. The nerves in the intestines can be affected, causing severe constipation or constant diarrhea.

One of the most common effect of diabetic neuropathy is in the sexual organs -- many diabetecis, both men and women, have trouble enjoying sex. This is often causes Erectile Dysfunction in men.

The good news is that the sooner you get diagnosed, the sooner you start making effective lifestyle changes, and the longer you keep your blood sugars normal, the less these effects will be. And in many cases they can be reversed, but very slowly

How does diabetes cause neuropathy and extreme thirst?

I have read that diabetes is associated with neuropathy (peripheral neuropathy and autonomous nervous system disorders such as urinary tract malfunction), as well as thirst. Specifically, how does it cause these two symptoms? It's OK if the answer is complicated; I'm just looking for an accurate explanation, since most of the web pages I've found just say that these are symptoms of diabetes, without explaining why.
Those are really phenomenal answers! Thanks so much. I should add that the reason I asked is that I have both symptoms, but my blood sugar is normal and any other diabetes tests were negative. I also have a few other minor symptoms of diabetes. Could these symptoms still have a common cause? (My doctor can't figure it out.)
----------

Well extremely high blood sugars causes a degradation of the myelin sheath of the nerve cell. This cause the nerve impulse to move more slowly and in some cases not at all.
As for why it make you thirsty the body always wants a balance of water inside and outside of the cells. When you have high blood sugar it causes water form inside the cell to move outside. Causing you to become thirsty  (+ info)

Hi

I suffer from Diabetic Neuropathy too and I was unable to wear socks before I had treatment too. My feet were always too swollen and painful.

I have since been using a device called ReBuilder which has totally eliminated the pain and brought down the swelling. I actually use their socks as a form of treatment! You'll see what I mean in this link: http://www.rebuildermedicaltreatment.com/rebuilder-medical_conductive-black-socks.html
