Anyone have Tinea Versicolor and successfully get rid of it?

I have had tinea versicolor for 2 years now and I finally treated it by rubbing foot cream all over it for 10 days. The itching and redness is gone, but its still lighter than the rest of my skin. Its really embarrassing and I dont know how I can go through ANOTHER summer like this. Anyone have any advice or maybe do you think I finally got rid of it??

Yes I do. Have your Dr proscribe Clotrimazole 1% per 10ml I had it for a long time and this worked.
Good luck...  (+ info)

How To Get Rid Of Tinea Versicolor?

I have tinea versicolor on my back, chest and shoulders. I got it in my early 20s, Im 28 now. It comes and goes through the years. Its mainly white color, at skin level, but sometimes it turns pink and is above skin level. I know about nizoral pills but i heard that was bad for your liver. What is the (non-prescription) treatment out there. THX
----------

I got rid of mine using Selsun Blue shampoo (my dermatologist's suggestions): smear it on affected areas, sleep on it and wash away in the morning shower. 2-3 sessions will do it.
Best,

Has anyone found a way to cure tinea versicolor?

My boyfriend has what we think is tinea versicolor. It's little white patches where the skin pigment is lighter than the rest. They are mostly on his back and shoulders and a few on his chest, I barely notice them but he hates them and apparently it will be more noticeable when he is outside more in the summer and tans. We have been putting antifungal cream on for a few weeks with no improvement. So has anyone had any luck with anything?

Hi, Not so long ago i got a skin disease called tinea versicolor Got a question?

I was wondering if there is a complete cure for tinea versicolor.
----------

Use selsun blue 2.5%, which you can buy at any drug store. Put it on the affected area and leave it on for about 10 minutes just while in the shower. It should clear up in around a month or two, but you should notice results earlier.
The bottle looks like this:

can i go to a regular GP doctor or should i go to a dermatologist for tinea versicolor?

i think i have tinea. i guess if i go to a GP will he be able to tell for sure i have tinea and if so prescribe me medicine, or should i go to a dermatologist?
----------

Your GP should be able to prescribe this for you. If it's an uncomplicated case, it should be easily treated. If the initial treatment doesn't work or if the doctor doesn't feel comfortable treating you for this, they may recommend you to a dermatologist. Go to your GP first though, it will save you time!

What is the best way to treat tinea versicolor?

Answers based on experience only, please!
Thanks for the response, matador 89.
I'm looking for non-prescription solutions. I'm not sure which of the things you listed were prescription or not. Could you or anyone else clarify?

If anyone has non-prescription experience with treating tinea versicolor I would very much like to hear about your experiences overcoming it.

If tinea versicolor - pityriasis versicolor - is severe or doesn't respond to over-the-counter medicine, you may need a prescription-strength topical or oral medication. These medications for tinea versicolor treatment include – for topical use - Selenium sulfide (Selsun) 2.5 percent lotion. Ciclopirox (Loprox) cream, gel or lotion. Ketoconazole (Nizoral) cream or shampoo. For oral use - Ketoconazole (Nizoral) tablets. Itraconazole (Sporanox) capsules. Fluconazole (Diflucan) tablets. Unfortunately, even after the treatment has been successful, the skin colour may remain uneven for several weeks. Also, the infection may return in humid and warm weather. In rare cases, you may need to take a medication once or twice a month to prevent the infection from recurring. The information provided here should not be used during any medical emergency or for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition. A licensed physician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment of any and all medical conditions.

how do you use selsun blue to treat tinea versicolor?

I have tinea versicolor on my stomache and lower back.My doc gave me a lotion for it but also told me to buy selsun blue and use it as a body wash daily and shampoo weekly.Am i suppose to lather with selsun blue, rinse, and use my dove body wash after?Or am i suppose to replace my body wash with the selsun blue all together? How long should I leave the selsun blue on my body before i rinse?Oh and how long should I leave it on m scalp before I rinse?
----------

Wash with it daily and apply a small amount on the areas and let dry. However, if it begins to irritate your skin by leaving it on, just wash with it and rinse.  (+ info)

Getting rid of persistent tinea versicolor?

I've tried selsun blue on it (what my doctor recommended) and even using it twice a day for a few weeks would lessen the symptoms but not make it go away. I've now had it for about 2 years without being able to keep it gone. Wondering if there are any other safe remedies for this? I'm in my third trimester of pregnancy so I can't be taking pills or anything. Any suggestions would be great, otherwise I'll just wait it out and try again with some medicine after the pregnancy.
----------

I would be careful with using the Selsun Blue, even though your doctor recommended it. I am almost 7 weeks pregnant with my second child and broke out with a rash. I went to the doctor today to be prescribed Selenium Sulfide, which is the active ingredient in Selsun Blue. The warning on the label states:

Selenium Sulfide Lotion should not be used for the treatment of tinea versicolor in pregnant women.

Also note that this is a 2.5% solution and typical anti-dandruff hair products are 1%.

See this website for more information: http://www.drugs.com/cons/selenium-sulfide-topical.html
