What are the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy?

I have a pain on the right side of the pelvic. I went to the Dr on Friday and she said it sounded like an ovary problem. I went today (Mon) and got a sono and labs. Now if it were an ectopic preg would they inform me right there and then or they still have to go through the radiologist first. I began with the pain a few days after I started and the pain has increased in the last two days.
if it is not an ectopic what would it be...I mean it has been hurting for a little over two weeks and the pain is beginning to increase?
----------

Don't worry, they would let you know right then and there if it were an ectopic pregnancy, as they would have to remove it quickly before it ruptures your fallopian tube.

It's usually very sharp pain in one side of your abdomen, to the point where you might hunch over in pain or cry/scream.

Edit: It could be a big cyst that hasn't ruptured yet. I had very bad pains on my left side where my ovaries/tubes are, and it finally went away, it was a huge cyst that finally ruptured. If that's not what it is, you might be getting ready for a bad period.  (+ info)

How to become pregnant after an ectopic pregnancy?

Someone close to me recently had an ectopic pregnancy and, as a result, lost her right fallopian tube. What are her options if she wants to become pregnant in the near future? She is confident that she can just stick with in vitro fertilization; however, I read that in virto has only a 30% success factor. Any advice??
----------

If she only lost one tube she can still get pregnant on her own. It's random which side her egg comes from each month. I lost one tube and still got pregnant after 4 months of trying.... and normally there is only a 25% chance each month anyway. Tell her don't lose hope! You can still do it on your own most likely.  (+ info)

What are the signs of an ectopic pregnancy?

I have an IUD in and lately I have been having spotting in between my periods and for the past couple days I have been having a sharp stabbing pain on my left lower abdomen that comes and goes. Does this sound like an ectopic pregnancy or am I over reacting?
I didnt have it put in recently. I had it put in over a year and a half ago.
----------

Though you would not think so with you having the IUD But It could be possible, especially regarding the pain in your lower left abdomen..this could be an ectopic pregnancy in your left fallopian tube.
Sometimes, depending on how far the pregnancy is developed, the actual embryo can come away with a bleed naturally and this is far more common occurrence than we think.
Sometimes however they can require surgical removal, often in emergency,as if left an ectopic pregnancy can have quite serious consequences.

Mother nature plays many tricks on us and the trouble is that many symptoms associated with pregnancies ectopic or otherwise, can also be easily compaired to the symptoms of your periods so can easily be confusing..So while I wouldn't worry too much, see if these pains pass over the next few days but if they worsen at all then seek medical help as soon you can.

Hope you feel better real soon,Good Luck! xxx  (+ info)

How does one differentiate between stomach pain from taking Plan B and stomach pain from an ectopic pregnancy?

Stomach pain is a typical side effect of taking Plan B but there is also a small risk for an ectopic pregnancy, which has a symptom of stomach pain. How does one tell the difference? What other symptoms would indicate an ectopic pregnancy rather than just typical side effects of Plan B? Thanks.
----------

Plan B prevents pregnancy just days after the woman has sex. An ectopic pregnancy takes just as long to implant as a normal pregnancy, 7-10 days. An ectopic pregnancy has pain located mostly on one side and may move to the center of the abdomen. It's extremely tender and the woman may have nausea and dizzyness. Hope that helps.  (+ info)

Are ectopic pregnancies the only situation in which an abortion is medically necessary?

We've heard Obama say that the sole reason he voted against a ban on late term abortion is because the bill did not provide an exception for the health of the mother. But other than ectopic pregnancies which can only occur within the first two months, what other possible reasons could there be?
----------

I don't like the basic idea of late term abortions either, but I'm not going to address political issues here. I'll leave that to you to decide for yourself what you think. The question I will answer is "Are there other reasons an abortion might be medically necessary?"

A pregnancy stresses the human body greatly. Aside from using up more resources to grow the child, the pregnancy can increase blood pressure, heighten risk of blood clots, cause digestive problems, strain the skeleton, and pretty much wreak havoc with all of the normal bodily processes of the mother. And that's just a normal pregnancy for a healthy woman.

When you take all of this bodily stress though and apply it to someone who is already weakened, you have a serious conundrum. Take, for example, a woman with a severely weakened heart. Perhaps she had an unseasonably young heart attack, or a MAJOR car accident which damaged it, or she has a congenital heart defect, or severely enlarged arteries around the heart. Any one of those heart conditions could be FATALLY aggravated by the stresses of pregnancy. Now you're facing a dilemma where insisting on carrying through with the pregnancy is very significantly likely to kill mother AND child.

Heart problems are just an easy-to-grasp example. There could be any number of conditions whereby a woman's body can be weakened or so delicately balanced that the stresses of a pregnancy would present incredible and salient risks to her life. All of these, admittedly, are rather rare. And you have to realize that these are all sad, difficult decisions, often made by someone who desperately WANTS the baby but is logically forced to choose the life of one (the mother) over the death of two. Don't trivialize those struggles for those people by moral rationalizing.

Another reason that abortions may be "needed" is if there are huge defects with the baby. I mean HUGE. For example, it can happen, however rarely, that there is no brain in the baby. The mother's body will act as a life-support machine until the moment of birth, so the baby could theoretically survive all 9 months and then be born. But as soon as it's kicked out of the life-sustaining womb, there is no brain to tell the heart to beat or the lungs to breathe. If you find out, at 6 or 7 months in, that the fetus is not at all viable to survive, it becomes an unnecessary medical risk to continue with the pregnancy (and all of its bodily stresses) for an additional 2 or 3 months-- not to mention the psychological strain of those months carrying a baby you know is condemned to die anyway.

There are other reasons that a baby could turn out to not be viable at all to survive. I mentioned the no-cranium example as one that is easy to grasp.

Some of these reasons (medical conditions of the mother, or an in ability to survive in the baby) may not be known so early as 2 months. It is difficult to diagnose problems in the fetus until it grows big enough to make them obvious enough, even with our advanced technologies these days. Or, rarely, the problems may develop DURING the pregnancy due to injury or illness or other such problems and not turn dire until well into it. As for the mother, she may be completely unaware of her health problems, as we so often are. I myself have a genetic predisposition for forming dangerous blood clots that I only discovered by putting my body through the stresses of hormonal birth control (yes, the pill/ring/patch/implant IS a great stress on the body's balances-- but that's another story). Had I developed my deep vein clots while pregnant, the situation could have easily killed both myself AND the baby in one fell swoop. All it takes is a clot breaking loose and traveling to the lungs to cause instant death.

Don't follow anyone's OPINION on this (even if they agree with your opinion). Just do some more research and listen with a guarded ear. Talk to people you respect for their wisdom. Then decide. This is not a black and white area. It's very grey, and it is difficult to sort through shades of grey. Stay away from people who claim it's black or white.  (+ info)

What will happen when 1 baby is ectopic and the other is in the uterus?

Is it possible take the ectopic pregnancy out and leave the other baby unharmed?
No my cousin just found out her babies are like this, she's in the ER now so I'm just trying to find out some information.
----------

The twin can survive.

That is why it is so important to make sure there is not twins before giving some meds to stop an ectopic pregnancy. If there are not twins sometimes doctors will give an injection of a harmful substance that will kill the embryo, only problem, if there are twins the other one will be harmed as well.

Therefore if there are twins they can remove the one twin that is outside the uterus through surgery, leaving the other safe and sound in the uterus.

Are you experiencing this? Ask you doctor what the options are. It may be very hard to say goodbye to your one twin. Check out pregnancyloss.info for healing after miscarriage, which is what I would consider an ectopic pregnancy. You do not want to remove the fetus, but he or she would not be able to survive otherwise and this unfortunate circumstance could lead to infection, even death if left untreated.

There have been a few cases where ectopic pregnancies have carried to term, ask your doctor if there is any chance in your circumstance.  (+ info)

At what week will an ectopic pregnancy cause pain and bleeding?

When will an ectopic pregnancy cause the tube to rupture (from last missed period)? Is there a point in early pregnancy where you are considered safe from ectopic pregnancy?
----------

Pain and bleeding?
Close to 8 weeks, provided your dates are right.

This is when the embryo starts to actually grow bigger than the fallopean tube, and cause problems.  (+ info)

Did anyone else fear a ectopic pregnancy and it ended up to be fine?

I'm 5/5 weeks pregnant and I'm scared of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. This isn't my first pregnancy but I feel like I forgot everything with the last. I've had one miscarried (prior to my son) and don't have any of the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy but scard to death.

Was anyone else like this?
Thanks everyone, you guys calmed my nerves!
----------

Yup! I'm currently pregnant with my first and I was very nervous it would end up being an ectopic pregnancy. But that fear seems totally valid with EVERY pregnancy. The biggest thing to remember is that ectopic pregnancies hurt. (At least that's what my doctor told me.) My friend had an ectopic pregnancy, she didn't even know she was pregnant, but they discovered when she was hopitalized with horrible pain. So as long as you aren't experiencing any major pain you should be just fine. =)
Congrats on the baby!  (+ info)

When you have shoulder pain during an ectopic pregnancy does it come and go?

I have a lot of pregnancy symptoms but negative tests. I have shoulder pain that is once and a while but when I get it, it can be pretty severe. It's between my neck and my arm socket.

For those that say it is not a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy to have shoulder pain, you are wrong it is. I just wanted to say that because I see people post that all the time.
----------

I'm not sure, but if you are late, having symptoms and negative tests, I would go to the ER and tell them your suspicions. I thought I was having an ectopic but it turned out the baby was where it needed to be. They will do an ultrasound and everything to be sure!  (+ info)

Does anybody know how soon you can start taking folic acid again after an ectopic pregnancy?
