Does alcohol affect tourette syndrome negatively?

I am 16 and grew up with tourette syndrome during my early childhood, but the tics disappeared at 12 and haven't come back. My family is afraid that if I consume any alcohol, it will bring back the tics without hope of them going away again. I don't drink but it sucks knowing I won't be able to do it when I am of age. Is this really what I will have to deal with the rest of my life?
----------

Not sure, however, Tourette Syndrome is lifelong and there is not a cure. I'm glad that your case followed the typical pattern, and subsided after puberty.

Your family is most likely concerned for your health and safety and want you to avoid alcohol.

Please ignore the bad advice to watch Tourettes Guy on YouTube. As you most likely know, that is not typical, and not funny.  (+ info)

How is the social life of a person who has tourette syndrome?

im would like to know because i am writing a paper on tourette syndrome
----------

The biggest and most bothersome MISCONCEPTION about this disorder is the coprolalia (cursing).

The fact is that cursing, uttering obscenities, and ethnic slurs are manifested by fewer than 15% of people with TS. Too often, however, the media seize upon this symptom for its sensational effect. Because milder cases are being diagnosed, the incidence of coprolalia will probably decrease.

It can be difficult at times, but for the most part, we treat my son (11 years old with Tourettes, OCD and ADHD) with the same love and respect at always. He has homework and chores like everybody else. In fact he thinks he is "normal" and has trouble believing that he has it!

He is slowly coming to terms with it. It takes extra patience and grace, which God provides, to do my best with him. I love him so very much, and pray that he will have the tools in life to deal with things. Not so much the Tourettes, per se, but to deal with people who stare, laugh or comment rudely. Sadly, that is more of a problem than the disorder itself.

I am teaching him that he can do anything, ANYTHING, that he chooses and puts his own mind to do. He has an IQ of 124 which is pretty smart. I am so proud he is my son and I would not trade him for the world.  (+ info)

Why is Tourette's a syndrome if it's symptoms are not transitory?

I'm not sure about the differences between disorder, disease, syndrome, and the others. However, it seems that a syndrome is a combinations of symptoms that together form a "syndrome."

Why is Tourette's considered to be a syndrome if it has one ailment- tics?
----------

The diagnostic term of "Tourette's" encompasses many different symptoms - not just tics. Science may decide that a specific symptoms allows an individual to be grouped with those that have Tourette's.

That said, Tourette's is neither a disorder, disease, nor syndrome. It is merely a diagnostic label for an individual that is experiencing unrecognized supernatural influences. Those with Tourette's are God's young saints!  (+ info)

Is tourette syndrome mostly a french thing?

I have tourette syndrome and i am of partial french ancestry and i am wondering if it is an ethnic thing. i dont hear of many people with tourette syndrome but of the ones i do hear about many of them are french or have french last names.
----------

No, it isn't an ethnic thing, like sickle cell anemia or tay sachs. It does have a genetic component, though how exactly it is inherited isn't known. It may be a predisposition in some families. According to CDC statistics, non-hispanic white children are twice as likely to be diagnosed with tourette's as black or Latino children. Most medical conditions occur more often in some populations than in others. It doesn't mean they never occur in others. Since there are people in all populations with tourette's, it isn't a genetic disorder.

Here is a link to the prevalence:

Is this a slight slight chance of tourette syndrome?

Through out the day maybe twice or even three times I like spaze out and I can't really help it. I usuallyflinch my shoulders and lean at a 15 degree angle and I do it randomly during the course of a day. I didn't know if I'm having a small spaze attack or maybe I get a chill or something. Or if it was a small tick like tourette syndrome people have. Does anyone know what it might be?
----------

Tourettes is Neurological, so I would recommend seeing a Neurologist. Tics are migratory and will change periodically. Is this your only tic? Or have there been others?

I would recommend making a log of your tics. Not a major writing project, just jot down what is happening and how many times per day. Take this information to your doctor. Information is vital in the diagnostic process, no matter what it turns out to be.

Best wishes.  (+ info)

How are Tourette Syndrome and ADHD related?

Eighteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. Around the same time, I did horrible in math and reading. And very often forgot directions and was very unorganized. And I got horrible job reviews after college - yet people said I was 'a positive person'.
NOW, studies show these disorders often go hand in hand. This all makes sense to me. But I'm confused as to how they are related.
----------

There may be some sort of correlation, but Tourettes doesn't cause ADHD nor vice versa. And if they are related, it's not going ot be some convinent answer, psychological disorders are such intricate things that even the root cause is usually debatable and changes with new information.  (+ info)

What are the chances of my children having Tourette syndrome?

Im planning to have a family in the future. Both of us dont have this syndrome. However, her mother does from her grandpa. Only blinking eyes. What are the chances of passing this on? Also, if it is passed on would it only be blinking eyes or could it be other symptoms of this same syndrome?

Were you aware that there is a National Tourette Syndrome Association? I would suggest contacting them and asking these questions.  (+ info)

Would anyone be willing to answer some tourette syndrome questions?

Only if you have it or if you live with somebody that has tourette syndrome.
----------

I have mild Tourette's syndrome and although I am still looking for answers myself, I have found out a lot of the last couple of years and am happy to be asked (genuine, sensible, mature) questions about it.

If you look at the links below, you will find forums where other people would be happy to answer questions too. Some of the forums have a section on it and some of them are specifically for the condition.

Good luck :)  (+ info)

What exactly is tourette's syndrome and might I possibly have it?

My eyebrows and upper lip twitch a lot, im not sure why yet. I also impulsively move my toes and feet around to the point where the hurt and I really can't stop. Sometimes when im in a really good mood I make this screechy noise and I say things randomly a lot just to hear myself say it because I feel like I need to hear myself or something. Could I possibly have tourettes syndrome, or could it just be my ADD/ADHD?
Thanks for any help!
----------

I have Tourette syndrome and it doesn’t seem like you have it. First off, is this stuff involuntary? Because with Tourette’s (or just tics) it’s not. You get this urge to do the tic but you can’t prevent it any better than you can prevent a cough or not scratching an itch. When you hold in a tic you get this horrible feeling (it’s NOT like OCD when you think something bad is going to happen). It’s like when you don’t scratch an itch, there’s this horrible feeling that goes through you that makes you scratch it.

So does it feel like that? If not than it could just be a twitch caused by stress. Or it could be part of ADHD. Oh, and there is a difference between tics and ADHD. With ADHD you’re really hyper and do this stuff because of that. But with tics you’ll do it whenever. For me, my tics get worse when I’m really tired.

If it does feel how I describe, than it’s a tic. But tics don’t automatically mean Tourette syndrome. One in a thousand kids have Tourette’s and one in a hundred have tics. So it’s not that really uncommon to have tics.

Two more things, first one, how old are you? If these tics started when you were younger eighteen than tourettes might be a possibility.

Then the second thing, how long has this lasted. If it’s been over a year and started when you were younger than eighteen, there are high chances of Tourette’s. But if it’s been under a year or you’re over eighteen, than it might just be a tic disorder.

Hope I helped.  (+ info)
