Can toxoplasmosis be a result of 2 miscarriages?

I have a cat I regularly clean his litter box. always use scooper and wash my hand right away. Can toxoplasmosis be a result of 2 miscarriages?
----------

Probably not. It sounds like you do everything right. However when you get pregnant again, you should get a self-scooping box or get somone else to scoop the box, just to be on the safe side. Unless you have the tissue sent off to pathology (which almost no one does because it's traumatic) then there's no way of knowing what caused your miscarriages. It could be anything.  (+ info)

How would you know if you contracted listerosis or toxoplasmosis?

Both of them have symptoms that can be related to any number of diseases/conditions. Who's to say you can't just chalk it up to a cold or an upset stomach??
----------

Toxoplasmosis is only a problem if you get it for the first time in your first trimester. They did a blood test for me at about week 6, and I (suprisingly, after 14 years of cleaning cat litter) had never had it.

Listeriosis, they can probably do a blood test or a sample and check it under the microscope. It's bacterial, and bacteria are big enough to see under a simple microscope. My gyn had a microscope in their offices where they could check samples. However, convulsions might be a clue.

Either way, you'd have to go to a doctor to be sure. I've heard people say women's immune systems are suppressed during pregnancy, but I didn't even get a cold during mine, so I don't know how to tell you the difference from day-to-day symptoms. I would have gone to the doctor for any illness. We tried for 5 years, I wasn't taking any chances.  (+ info)

pregnancy and toxoplasmosis in indoor cats?

Hi,

I've heard about pregnant women not handling cat's litter box during pregnancy and it has something to do with toxoplasmosis.

From what I understand, cats get infected if they hunt outside and eat infected animals.

My question is, i have 2 cats that are strictly indoor. We never let them out (the used to be able to go out and hunt before we got them but that was 2 years ago.)

Is it safe for me (when im pregnant) to handle the litter box? Or gloves really do help like they say?

Thanks in advance!
----------

I called my Dr on this one and she told me NO NO NO.

Having indoor cats is fine but changing the litter box is a no no!

Please don't change the litter box, think of it this way for a whole 9 months someone else gets to do that chore :)  (+ info)

Does anyone the chances of gettin toxoplasmosis from an indoor kitten while pregnant?

Hes never been outside..well only in his carrier to go to the vets and only eats kitten food and milk from the shop nothing else..but im still worried because when he goes to the poo sometimes i have to wipe his bum after..i do clean my hands though of course!

does anyone know if i would have a chance of getting this?
----------

yes you can get it. I have an indoor cat the doc told me the safest thing to do if no one else can do it is to wear gloves and a mask.

"So if you know you've never had toxoplasmosis and have cats, you shouldn't change the litter box, and you'll want to be careful about gardening. (Use gloves and a mask if you have to do these things.) Routine bloodwork isn't recommended, but if you're going to be around cats and you're not sure whether you've had toxoplasmosis, you can have your blood sent out for special tests to see whether you've been exposed. If you have been, you don't need to worry about it."  (+ info)

If my cats have never been outside is it still possible for me to contract toxoplasmosis while pregnant?

I am 14 weeks pregnant and have two cats. They have never been outside and have never come into contact with rodents or birds. Is it ok for me to occasionally scoop our litter box without risk of toxoplasmosis? My husband travels every other week and I can't stand the smell if is sits too long.
----------

You'll be fine, just wash your hands really well after you're done. You could also buy a pair of those yellow cleaning gloves from the supermarket.

My doctor told me that if you grew up living with cats, you're most likely not going to get sick from the catbox because you're body is already immune to it.  (+ info)

Questions about adopting a cat and Toxoplasmosis?

Ok, first off, I am 7 weeks pregnant. Me and my husband were planning on adopting 2 adult cats from a family that is moving out of state and cannot take the cats with them tomorrow. They are both indoor cats, front declawed. I told him before we even said yes to taking the cats that I wouldn't be able to change the litter pan at all because of my pregnancy, and he was fine with that.

Well I was doing a little research on Toxoplasmosis and found this:

• Don't get a new kitten or cat while you're pregnant, and don't play with stray cats or kittens.

Now what am I going to do? We were really looking forward to bringing these kitties home tomorrow, but I'll have to say no if it's going to put our baby in danger...Most of the other websites say "Don't bring a new cat into your home that has been an outdoor cat or has been fed raw meat"... but I'm still worried.

What would you do??
----------

I researched this A LOT a couple months back because my husband wanted to get a couple kittens for our children for Christmas. Everything I found said that cats are fine for pregnanyt women to be around, just don't clean their litter box. The parasite cannot "live" on their fur, only in their intestines and excrament. Also, once a cat has been indoors for 30 days there is little chance it can carry these parasites as the cat's immune system will have killed them off. If you are still worried about this, take the cats to the vet, they can draw some blood and test it to see if the cats have the parasite. Hope I helped...wish I had book marked some of this info....  (+ info)

Is toxoplasmosis something I really should worry about?

My friend is pushing me to get checked for this. I told her I will my next doctors visit but she keeps telling me about it. I guess pregnant women can get it from cats and I have four. After reading about it I don't wanna get all paranoid about it. I don't have any symptoms or anything she is just saying all pregnant women should get checked for this. I have not heard of it until now. Do they check for this routinely when they take my blood or not?
----------

You should tell the Dr... You can only get it if your doing the litter or rubbing your hands on your cats behinds or something... if you aren't doing either of those, chances are very slim you have it... people over react to that... cats are ok... just avoid kitty poo and you're FINE...

(at your initial visit they should have asked about pets... chances are if you told her you have cats they checked for it and told you to stay away from the litter...(if she's a good dr at least))  (+ info)

Toxoplasmosis testing - how much does it cost in the US, and where should one go to get tested?

Is it true that if you already have been exposed to the parasite in the past, that a subsequent exposure while pregnant is not harmful to the fetus?
----------

You can call a local health department also and find out the cost and get tested. The answer the NP gave you is correct.  (+ info)

At 33 weeks pregnant, How would I know if I had Toxoplasmosis?

My fiancee has a few cats, which are all pretty much outside all the time. His little sister who lives in the same house lets them in, and they poop and walk and sleep all over in his bedroom. Im careful to keep my shoes on and not touch them, but im still worried?
