Am I already immune to the toxoplasmosis virus?

So I have had cats all my life and I just moved to California and I got a cat about 2 months ago and found out I was pregnant. So I was wondering since I have been in contact with many cats in my life if I am already immune to the virus or is there still a chance I haven't gotten it yet?
----------

I have had cats for the past 2 years and did all of the litter box duty prior to pregnancy. My husband does a terrible job and lets it sit too long. Anyway, I was negative when I got the test. When you go to the doctor you can ask for a blood test to find out if you are positive or not. Chances are if you have indoor cats the risk is pretty low b/c they do not eat raw meat and are not outdoors to pick up the virus. However, the risk is too great if you do happen to catch it. So if your test comes back negative, let someone else clean!  (+ info)

Can Toxoplasmosis make you sick more than once?

I had Toxoplasmosis about 8m to 1 year ago from working in an animal hospital. I was sick from it. I was told it wouldn't bother me again but now I am feeling the same again after running myself down. Is it possible to come back, like flare ups? I have a normal immune system. Thanks
I have been a vet tech for 9 years, and I continue to work hands on.I know that I have not been infected until 8m-1y ago because I had my titers checked at a prenatal visit 1 year before that and they were neative. I visited my infectious dz doc today and they are rechecking my Toxo igG and igM and other labs again. I feel the exact same way I did when I was sick before. Joint pain, swollen painful lymphnodes, headache, fever, sweating and chills to name a few. I have been checked for some many zoonotic dz, I know I don't have those. I guess we will see, thanks foor your input!!!

If you have a normal immune system, getting toxo again would be a rarity worthy of medical journal publication. Stuff like that just isn't supposed to happen!

People develop pretty good immune responses to T. gondii. In fact, to have it with a normal immune system at all is pretty unusual. But its symptoms can mimic other illnesses. The best way to determine whether you really are sick again is to have them do a serological test (blood specimen) and see whether your IgM is high. If it is, yeah, it's likely to be acute infection. Otherwise, it's probably something else. Are you still working at the animal hospital?  (+ info)

being immune to toxoplasmosis, can i eat raw fish and meat now?

i've made the test of the toxoplasmosis and the result was that i've had before so that means i immune now :D, but then i wonder if it is completely safe to eat raw fish or raw meat during pregnancy???
thanks
there are 2 types of test for toxoplasmosis : 1) the IGM , that indicates if at the moment of the test u have toxoplasmosis or not and 2) the IGG, that indicates if u had it in the pass, if u had it then u are immune to this one.

Toxoplasmosis is in fact one of the risks with raw meats and fish, but another is listeria which is also very harmful to baby should you come in contact with it. Be careful, I recommend staying away from undercooked meats of all kinds during pregnancy, and don't worry, it's only 9 months then you can go back to eating whatever you want!

How can you get toxoplasmosis?

I know you can get it from cat feces, partially raw meat. I want to know this because im pregnant and I work at a nursing facility in the laundry department and there is a woman in there with toxoplasmosis and now im really nervous about going back to work because we have to wash her clothes apart from everyone else's but I beleive the virus will still be in the washer...

How is toxoplasmosis spread?
Experts estimate that about half of toxoplasmosis infections are caused by eating raw or undercooked infected meat, but you can also get the parasite by eating unwashed contaminated produce, drinking contaminated water, or handling contaminated soil, cat litter, or meat and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Toxoplasmosis can't be transmitted from person to person, with the exception of transmission from mother to baby during pregnancy or from an infected blood transfusion or organ transplant.

question about the toxoplasmosis screening blood test?

I am 10 weeks pregnant. My obstetrician wants me to have the blood test to see if I have immunity to toxo, because I live with three cats. Is the test sensitive enough to tell the difference between a current infection, and immunity from a previous infection? I read in a pregnancy book this was not the case, and if it came up positive, there was no way to tell if you had immunity, or were in the middle of a full-blown infection.

What are other people's experiences with this???
----------

If you have toxplasmosis once then you can't get it again. Chances are you've already been infected and are immune if you're the one that changes that cat boxes. If the test comes up positive then that means you just recently got it. Good luck!  (+ info)

Have you ever been food poisoned from salmonella, toxoplasmosis, or listeria during pregnancy?

How did you know you were infected??
I remember having some episodes where i had headaches and sometimes abdominal cramps..
i never got checked though... I am worried i had caught something in the past and not know about it..

Is it easy to catch these infections? For example, i eat out often, what if the food wasn't properly cooked? Help!

Is there a cure for Toxoplasmosis?

I have had ongoing treatment twice for toxoplasmosis since 2004, back and forth each week to the doc, like 15 diff kinds of medicines I had to take every day and have to take it again if it comes back in my eye. I wash my hands a thousand times and clean my place and everything. Last time I went back there, the doc found sinus scarring and of course scarring around my eye and the cyst behind my eyeball had shrunk from the steroids but he said I have to see the eye doc for life. I've known people of getting surjery and injections in their eyes. Is there any real cure for Toxoplasmosis?
----------

Toxoplasmosis is difficult to treat. It is a parasitic infection. The medication to treat Toxoplasmosis is Antimony, a heavy metal. Long story short, the medication is very toxic and kills not only the parasite but healthy cells as well. So, doctors try to titer the amount of medication which would be therapeutic but not toxic. I know of one patient who was successfully "cured." I am sorry to hear you are experiencing complications in your treatment.  (+ info)

Can I "catch" toxoplasmosis from my cat?

Because cats only shed the organism for a few days in their entire life, the chance of human exposure is small. Owning a cat does not mean you will be infected with the disease. It is unlikely that you would be exposed to the parasite by touching an infected cat, because cats usually do not carry the parasite on their fur. It is also unlikely that you can become infected through cat bites or scratches. In addition, cats kept indoors that do not hunt prey or are not fed raw meat are not likely to be infected with T. gondii.

In the United States, people are much more likely to become infected through eating raw meat and unwashed fruits and vegetables than from handling cat feces.  (+ info)

Could my husband have given me toxoplasmosis?

I am 13 wks pregnant with twins and my husband was eating a rare burger and then proceeded to make out with me. Could I have conracted the disease from his uncooked food? He didn't kiss me with the food in his mouth, but it was right after.
----------

No it doesn't sound viable that you would become infected that way. That rarely happens in the US..

FYI for those who have no clue as to Taxoplasmosis (Taxoplasma)..It doesn't only come from cat feces.

A Toxoplasma infection occurs by:

Accidentally swallowing cat feces from a Toxoplasma-infected cat that is shedding the organism in its feces. This might happen if you were to accidentally touch your hands to your mouth after gardening, cleaning a cat's litter box, or touching anything that has come into contact with cat feces. Eating contaminated raw or partly cooked meat, especially pork, lamb, or venison; by touching your hands to your mouth after handling undercooked meat.
Contaminating food with knives, utensils, cutting boards and other foods that have had contact with raw meat.
Drinking water contaminated with Toxoplasma.
Receiving an infected organ transplant or blood transfusion, though this is rare.  (+ info)
