First of all, everyone has a Tricuspid valve and a Mitral valve, but not everyone has Prolapsed mitral or tricuspid valves which make a murmur sound when the doctor listens. It is very common and rarely indicates anything bad. Alot of times a doctor will do an echocardiogram just to make sure that the valves are functioning ok. Anytime you take any type of supplements, I suggest you talk to your doctor. I don't think it will hurt anything, but I'm not a doctor. If you do have valve prolapses, let your Dentist know though so he can decide if you need antibiotics before dental work, also called SBE prophylaxis. Dental work and a prolapsed valve can get bacteria into and damage the valves.  (+ info)

why do I have Swollen ankles & legs. HX: mitral & tricuspid valve prolapse. kidneys & liver are normal?

I have mild- moderate reguritation of the valves. I watch my diet for sodium. I do cardio excersize 4-5 times/ wk for about 2 hours each time.

If your valves are not incompetent to the point where they are causing heart failure then this is a local phenomena most probably related to weak leg veins or venous incompetence. If it is worse at the end of the day and better overnight this is the likely cause.  (+ info)

what are the effects caused by a weak tricuspid valve on the cardiovascular system?

explain the effects
----------

stepupscistudent,
Diseases of the tricuspid [and pulmonary valves] are fairly rare. I shall briefly discuss the three main diseases that may affect the tricuspid valve, and the affects they have on the heart. Tricuspid stenosis is a narrowing or blockage of the tricuspid valve. The tricuspid valve regulates the blood flow from the heart's upper-right chamber (the right atrium) to the lower-right chamber (the right ventricle). Tricuspid stenosis causes the right atrium to become enlarged, while the right ventricle does not get enough blood. Tricuspid atresia is a type of congenital heart disease in which the tricuspid heart valve is missing or abnormally developed. The defect blocks blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle. This is an uncommon form of congenital heart disease and twenty percent of patients with this condition will also have other heart problems. Tricuspid regurgitation / Tricuspid insufficiency / Tricuspid incompetence - is a disorder in which the heart's tricuspid valve does not close properly, causing blood to flow backward (leak) into the right upper heart chamber when the right lower heart chamber contracts. The three diseases that I mention above all have especial effects on other parts of the body and it would take up too much space here to outline these details. I shall therefore add a link below with some details which you might care to research –

What happens if the Tricuspid Valve is weak?

we have three valve in our heart. bicuspid, tricuspid and pulmonary valve. all are design to prevent blood from backing up and reversing in the opposite direction. if it does, you have a problem. especially if you have a tricuspid valve abnormality. tcuspid valve is your first valve of your heart. blood comes from the inferior and superior vena cava. when this valve does not work you are what its called congestive heart faluire and this is when abnormalities in your heart, back up blood from your heart to your legs, lungs and the heart it self.

so weak valve, my oppinion is chf and a myelcardio infartion (heart attack.)  (+ info)

Mitral Valve Insufficiency and Pain?

I have been diagnosed with mitral valve insufficiency last year. But for the last few days, i have been experiencing pain in my chest/heart area...SHould i be worried?....Mild pain by the way.
----------

Well i dont really think it is that big because mitral valve insufficiency is known to do that but you can never be too sure. Actually i would Recommend going to the doctors because heart pains is always a seriuos matter and if it becomes worse, it might be too late.

So as i said, Please go to the doctor, not just for you, but for your family because they care about you ;)  (+ info)

Is aortic valve insufficiency hereditary?

I just found out my fiance has valve insufficiency. He was told (by the VA) it was hereditary. His mom says it isn't. Does anyone know?
----------

Some forms are hereditary and others are acquired. Aortic insufficiency can be associated with several forms of congenital heart disease. Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos (several subtypes) are hereditary.

Having rheumatic fever in childhood can result in AI as an adult.

what is done to correct moderate to severe mitral valve insufficiency?

It depends on the patient and the condition - whether the valve is stenotic (not opening fully) or incompetent (not closing fully).

Initially the doctors will work with medication to mitigate the symptoms. If this is successful, the patient will be placed on longterm drug therapy. This will not fix the problem, but it may make it liveable.

If medication is not effective on its own, then surgery becomes necessary to replace the diseased valve. The replacement options are either tissue (made from porcine or bovine tissue) which will last for about 15 years and then need to be replaced again, or mechanical, steel and titanium which last for a lifetime, but carry a 1-2% chance per year of stroke or leakage and require anticoagulant (blood thinner) therapy for the rest of the patient's lifespan.

If this is for your own health or that of a loved one, best of luck.  (+ info)
