Trigeminal disease treatment?

Can somebody help me with my dad's disease. He has trigeminal nerve disease for more than 20 years , and his pain is till undercontolled. How can I help him with this? Treatments are expensive. And he lives in Mexico and I live in the US.
----------

Are you talking about Trigeminal Neuralgia?? If so, this is a disorder of the fifth cranial nerve ( trigeminal nerve) in which episodes of severe, stabbing pain affects the cheek, lips, gums,or the chin, usually on one side of the face. The pain is very brief( lasting only a few seconds to minutes) but, is often so intense that the person is unable to do anything for the duration of the attack. The pain often causes wincing and for this reason, it is also known as Tic Douloureux( literally, "painful twitch"). Trigeminal neuralgia is unusual under the age of 50. When it does occur in younger people,it may be associated with Multiple Sclerosis( a progressive disease of the central nervous system,in which scattered patches of myelin sheaths { the protective covering of nerve fibers} in the brain are destroyed). Attacks of Trigeminal neuralgia occur in bouts that may last for weeks at a time. Pain-free intervals between attacks tend to become shorter with time. The cause of trigeminal neuralgia is uncertain. The pain nearly always starts from trigger point on the face and, can be brought on by touching the face, shaving, washing, eating, drinking, or even talking.Treatment is difficult. Tegretol ( carbamazepine) suppresses the pain in most sufferers, but resistance to the drug develops in some people or they are unable to tolerate a high enough dosage to relieve the pain. If drug treatment fails, surgical options are available. Sorry for the long-winded explanation. If your Dad has had this more than 20 years, how old is he now?? If medications have failed, then the next option would be surgery, not exactly inexpensive but, there are not too many options available. Since you are a resident of the US, why can't you obtain a visa for your Dad so that he can be evaluated in the US ?? I'm not sure on the regulations of such things but, he's your Dad. So, see what you can do, research any options that are available etc. I hope that this helps and Good Luck to you and your Dad. Here is a website:

Aspartame is a toxic nerve pioson that in tests, caused brain tumours in rats, Why was it passed by the FDA?

Senior brain surgeons are claiming that Aspartame is probably responsible for a huge increase in brain tumours and diseases. Why then, was it passed by the FDA as fit for human consumption?
I have heard that the guy in the Regan Administration that allowed Aspartame to be used in food, went on to become the CEO of Serle, the company that makes, you guessed it, Aspartame.
----------

Again I should be dead and buried - I've taken aspartame for about 15 years now and I'm still here. One thing they forgot to mention (I read about those experiments) the rats were given such a massive dose that no human being could possibly ingest in not one but two lifetimes. I mean you would have to eat the stuff with a shovel. That's why the rats developed those tumors. The amount given to those rats was way over-the-top out of proportion.

And by the way I've never had headaches or any other kind of side effects.

Funny isn't it people keep complaining about how much deadly stuff is in our food and how much pollution there is in the air and about global warming and the ozone layer yet our life expectancy has never been so high.  (+ info)

Which herb tablets help to maintain or repair nerve function or symptoms of Parkinson's disease?

Thanks in advance.
Also this is for 60 years old male.
----------

Actually, there are a few things that can help. Funny enough, Dr. Julian Whitaker just had an article in his most recent newsletter about this, too. He said that CoQ10, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Creatine, Vitamin D, N-Acetyl-Cysteine, Vitamin C, Glutathione, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can all have beneficial impacts towards Parkinson's Disease (all in appropriate doses, of course). No, most of them aren't herbs, but most of them are natural nutrients that the body needs anyway ;-)
His website is at http://www.drwhitaker.com if you'd like more info. Good luck to the both of you!  (+ info)

What can be done for a pinched nerve in the lower back?

My mom is a 63 yr old woman who has scolosios/kyphosis,degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis. She has a pinched nerve in her lower back where the curvature is. What can be done to treat the pinched nerve & and relieve her excruciating pain. (Thank you for all who answered.) I should have been more precise with my original question. Please help
----------

Two things can be done... One is to see a chiropractor who will try to easy the pain using adjustments. The second thing is to get surgery. Depending on the advancement of your mother's scoliosis, etc... Surgery may be the only option.  (+ info)

Neuralgia patients only: What treatment options have you tried for Trigeminal and/or Occipital Neuralgias?

I tried Tegretol XR, Neurontin, Lyrica, and finally microvascular decompression surgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia. I needed two more surgeries last year because the titanium plate they put in my head kept shifting. I then developed Occipital Neuralgia from the other surgeries. I recently had the Occipital nerve severed to take away the pain. I continue to have extreme pain in my eye and I'm told that the first surgery may only work for 3-5 years.

Go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. My father had TN and he would get "blocks" (not too much worse than a shot) periodically. They would work for a while (years), but every time he went back they had a newer treatment, that was not that traumatic (nothing like severing the nerve) The side effects were very minor. Also, they are probably cheaper than your local hospital and doctors.

He was treated there for 20 years before he passed away at 93.

P.S. Tegretol and Neurontin can cause lupus type side effects which will report positive for lupus even though you do not have the disease. I thought they were harmful.  (+ info)
