In simple quick terms, what's truncus arteriosus?

As title

This was the simplest picture I could find, basically it is a large ventricular septal defect over which a large, single great vessel (truncus) arises. This single great vessel carries blood both to the body and to the lungs.  (+ info)

Is atrial septal defect the same thing as patent ductus arteriosus?

The description sounds the same to me. I'm trying to get into the military and they'll make an exception for patent ductus arteriosus. I was diagnosed with atrial septal defect and they sound like the same thing.

Are they?
----------

No, they are not the same.
If it hasn't bothered you so far in life why not talk to a recruiter?
An ASD may be so small that it doesn’t need treatment.  (+ info)

What would cause a persistent peanut taste in my mouth?

Ever since I got a cold mid April 2009, I have had an odd peanut taste in my mouth. When I eat, I taste the food that I am eating and peanuts. The taste is more persistent when I have a cold, so the taste may be contributed to that.
----------

One of two things: Either there is an elephant in the room or you have some kind of a disorder that is affecting your taste buds. I'd bet on the second one. If it was me, I would go to a doctor just in case it is something serious. When you have strange effects, there may be a treatable cause that could be significant to something else.

Good luck to you.  (+ info)

What are possible causes of a persistent sore throat?

I developed what I thought was flu-like symptoms about six weeks ago. All of the sneezing and associated symptoms have gone away, but I'm stuck with a persistent cough and sore throat and crushing fatigue. What could be causing this? I also have a brain injury and dysautonomia. Is this possible a flare up of my dysautonomia or maybe I have something new? Any advice? Thanks.
----------

It could just be a mild flu or virus. Or mono, an STD or some minor irritation or allergy, heck there are a ton of possible causes.

Gargle with some listerine or swallow whiskey and honey and you will feel better. The alcohol kills and rinses whatever it is away.  (+ info)

I have been having strange persistent sensations in my scrotum or testicles daily?

I have been having strange persistent sensations in my scrotum or testicles daily for the past several months. It feels like an intense tingling or bug crawling sensation. It is worse when I am sitting or recumbent. My scrotum appears to be moving when I am having the sensation. I don't seem to be having a lot or pain but an occasional dull ache in my testicles . Any thoughts?

Well it is always good to go to the doctor because they give a better diagnoses than people of the internet. However, it sounds completly normal! Dont worry its probably just blue balls. It means you need to wank.  (+ info)

Hot tea w/honey! No honey? just use sugar. And no dairy, it can cause more mucous production, which could make your cough worse.  (+ info)

How do I get a persistent bruise to go away?

I have had a persistent bruise on my face due to the way I used to sleep. I pinched the skin somewhat by sleeping wiht my face on my hand. I have started to sleep on my back again and the bruise is starting to fade but I would like to know how to get it to fade faster?
----------

ignore teri's answer, that is completely normal so dont worry. Just keep doing what you're doing, leave the bruise alone, there are some creams you can get to help it heal, and before you know it it'll be completely gone! =)  (+ info)

Smoker has persistent cough and short of breath. What diagnosis would a doctor make?

Full question is "A smoker sees his doctor because he has a persistent cough and is short of breath after very little exertion. What diagnosis will the doctor make and what can the person expect if he does not quit smoking?"

This is one of my essay questions for my anatomy test and I can not find the answer or something along the lines of an answer anywhere in my notes or book. Any help, please?
----------

Since it's an essay question, you probably should talk about whether or not he is coughing anything up (producing sputum). It sounds like chronic bronchitis. The diagnosis of chronic bronchitis would be made if he has a persistent cough with sputum production for at least 3 months/year for 2 years.
However, if there's no sputum, it sounds more like emphysema. Both diseases are most common in smokers, would make him short of breath, and can cause persistent cough.

Both diseases are also classified under COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). So if you want to play it safe, you could just write COPD, which would cover both chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Also, the patient could go into heart failure as a consequence.  (+ info)
