FAQ - Twins, Conjoined

In the case of conjoined twins, what would happen if one of them passed away?

Would the other die as well?
----------

Generally, the other dies quickly after, as they share one blood supply. If the death is anticipated, they may be separated, but that would only work if the living twin had all the essential parts for survival.  (+ info)

Can conjoined twins get surgery to seperate?

Yes but it depends on how they are joined.

Some of them can't be separated because of the organs/limbs they share. They would not be able to function if they were separated.

Others are separated successfully, often ones joined shallowly at the head, so they have a body each. Where they share limbs it's more problematic.

In some cases one twin is stronger than the other and they have to be separated to save the stronger twin, even though the weaker one will die if separated. (They would both die if left together.)

what comments/reaction can you give to my case reading about conjoined twins?

i need this badly cause im going to report this to my duty at the hospital

I think it's sad, but most conjoined twins don't mind it.

The most awful part is when one of them dies, then the other has to be attached to their siblings dead body, it must be so devastating.  (+ info)

How do conjoined twins have babies?

because I'm watching this show and they both want to have kids..But how would they who would be the mom!! Because they have a normal body one controls one side and the other control the next!!! How would it work and who would be the mom!!
----------

It depends on many factors, including the type of conjoinment, the ability to reproduce, and the potential danger to the twins, if female. I would think that for dicephalus female twins, they could have children, if their health permitted. If female twins were born sharing reproductive organs facing one another, having children might be physically prohibitive. Completeness and functionality of reproductive organs may be the most important factor in reproduction for conjoined twins.

If the twins were born joined at the top of their skulls, or lower abdomen, reproduction may be prohibitive, for many reasons. Obviously, copulation could prove to be quite difficult, especially for those twins joined at the pelvis, with their heads at opposite ends of conjoinment. Being born facing one another, especially at the chest or abdomen, may very well prove daunting for reproduction. I would think their bodies would prevent growth of a fetus, even if they consented to one of the twins attempting copulation with a non-conjoined male.

Degrees and types of conjoinment are quite various, as one will discover through online research. For some twins, copulation, gestation, and childbirth may be nearly as practical as non-conjoined mothers-to-be. Consider that in a case where female twins are joined closely, as dicephalus types, the physical act of reproduction may seem easy enough to complete. If a male were to desire sexual intercourse with a female joined to her sister back-to-back, i.e. the lower spinal region, can he do so without offending the twin of his lover? The possibilities are quite varied, do to a plethora of reasons.

I have wondered, like many others, what it would be like to have relations with attractive conjoined women. Would marriage be legal and practical? I would imagine that both twins would enjoy the sensations and climax associated with sexual intercourse. Could sex with my conjoined partner be possible without guilt? What if she and her twin each had two arms, but only one pelvis and two legs? Fascinating, yet very strange, to imagine myself copulating with a woman born in such a way. Since they are literally two women, yet joined together, I would have to be understanding if my conjoined wife's sister wanted a husband of her own. Would that be very difficult to accept, especially if my wife was a dicephalus twin? I could postulate and speculate for a very long time.  (+ info)

Question about conjoined twins?

I am watching a show on tlc about 50 something year old conjoined twins. Would it be possible for one twin to die, and the other survive and be separated off because they would no longer need to share those organs?
----------

Depends on how the 1 twin died.

Remember, what happens to 1 effects the other. A car wreck, a prolonged disease, etc, will make both twins weak. If the dead twins parts of the organs are damaged, well, they can't be used by the healthy twin, right?  (+ info)

Giving birth to conjoined twins?

Usually it's Cesarean, but there have been cases of vaginal births to conjoined twins. In both cases, Cesarean AND vaginal, how does one birth conjoined twins?

I've heard cases where there are minutes in between one twins birth and the other? How does that happen? What's the word for twins born at the exact same moment?
----------

I don't follow what your saying. it's impossible to have conjoined twins born two different ways.  (+ info)

Cannibalism or Conjoined Twins?

I have been assigned to create a power point presentation for my biology class, with the advantage of picking whatever subjects- cannibalism and conjoined twins appealed to me most. But I am having difficulty deciding between the two, for one I am not sure the class would enjoy the heavy approach of cannibals, but I wouldn’t mind such, and conjoined twins is my second choice. I have also had the ideas of exploring the left and right side of the brain, but that has been done numerous times before me, and I am also thinking about voodoo psychology. I am mostly considering the voodoo, cannibal, and twins topics.
Any suggestions? Which do you think would be best/most interesting?
----------

If your making a power point go for the cannibalism the topic would definitely keep everyones attention and for fun you could serve barbecue during your presentation :)
The voodoo topic would be the other one that I think would be interesting...... However if you are wanting something easy because of time crunch or such go for conjoined twins there is a lot of info on that subject...... Good luck....  (+ info)
