How did ancient Greeks treat Typhus/Typhoid Fever?

I'm writing a research paper for my history class and I can't find any treatments that the ancient Greeks used to treat it. I found plenty of modern treatments but that's not what I need...
----------

The only thing that stopped the spread of Typhoid Fever was hand washing/sanitation. That is the way it was spread so rapidly (by dirty hands). Google Typhoid Mary - you will find interesting stuff on her and how she spread the illness. She was a maid/cook and never washed her hands prior to cooking and spread the illness to her employers everywhere she went.  (+ info)

How can the egg miss the uterus ending in a tubal or endemic pregnancy? How does this happen?

It is an ectopic pregnancy. And it doesn't miss the uterus... an egg is released from your ovary, sperm swim up to meet it... they meet in the tube and travel down to the uterus. In an ectopic pregnancy the fertilized egg will implant itself in the tube instead of travelling down and implanting in the uterus.

Hope this helps!  (+ info)

What does the word 'endemic' mean in 'a malaria endemic region'?

In epidemiology, an infection is said to be endemic in a population when that infection is maintained in the population without the need for external inputs.

For example, chickenpox is endemic (steady state) in the UK, but malaria is not. Every year, there are a few cases of malaria acquired in the UK, but these do not lead to sustained transmission in the population due to the lack of a suitable vector  (+ info)

where in the world is bird flu endemic?

where in the world is bird flu endemic?
----------

South East Asia mostly, it seems to hang around in animal reservoirs (birds).

The virus is spreading so fast because of the birds that bring it to new countries and only then do humans become infected, when the virus has established itself in the bird population.

This map shows how it has spread,
Light red → Countries with poultry or wild birds killed by H5N1.
Dark red→ Countries with humans, poultry and wild birds killed by H5N1.

what's the difference between typhus and typhoid?

Good question. Typhus is a febrile illness caused by bites from fleas carried on mice (if I remember correctly). People get fever, rash, myalagias, etc. Typhoid is a condition cause from S. Typhoid a subtype of salmonella bacteria that infects people and can become chronic from moving into the gallbladder from the GI tract.  (+ info)

Different types of typhus?

what is the difference between murine and endemic typhus?
----------

Both are the Rickettsia Typhi bacteria.

Endemic typhus is uncommon in the US. It is most often a problem where hygiene is poor and the temperature is cold. It is sometimes referred to as jailhouse fever, as it is spread by the lice and fleas of the flying squirrel.

Murine typhus can be found in the southeastern and southern US and most often seen in the summer and late fall. It is spread via exposure to rat fleas and rat feces, also exposure to infected opossums, raccoons and skunks.  (+ info)
