Anyone have Uveitis of the eye....? Cause I do...?

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this be4. How long has it lasted?
And what can I do.. Im seeing a eye specialist. And im doing predisone drops every 2 hours along with dilator drops. However my vision is still foggy. And according to my doc the inflammation has not gone down yet..
Ive had this eye issue since March 4th.
IM just looking for others that have had this and can tell me what I should expect. Thanks
----------

Uveitis is an inflammation (not an infection) of the uveal tract of the eye. This includes the iris and the ciliary muscle inside the eye. There are known contributing factors such as arthritis but many times we never really know what causes a uveitis.

Your doctor is treating you appropriately. Some uveitis cases resolve rapidly but others can take weeks or a month or two to completely resolve. This is all about following your doctors instructions completely and being patient.

As to your eyes being blurry, this is very possibly due to the dilating drops you are using rather than the uveitis itself. These dilating drops paralyse the focusing muscle of the eye (the ciliary muscle that is inflamed) and therefore will cause blurred vision as long as they are used.

I have occasionally had to resort to using oral steroids on extremely resistant cases of uveitis but the great majority of cases will resolve with the treatment you are using with time and patience.  (+ info)

Any other young people who've had cataract surgery?

I am 29 years old, I have uveitis which caused me to develop a cataract in one eye. I'm going next week to have surgery, has anyone else had it so I can know what to expect? If you have uveitis, what treatment options have been made available to you?
----------

Unfortunately, the general experience of most people who have had cataract surgery does not apply when there is a history of uveitis. Many people will say that cataract surgery "was a piece of cake," or that their vision was better before they even left the operating room. However, most of these people are at least 50 years old and do not have uveitis.

Both youth and a history of uveitis increase the risk of surgery. Younger eyes tend to be at a higher risk of retinal detachment after surgery. Eyes with a history of inflammation are at higher risk of intraocular pressure spike (glaucoma), macular edema (swelling of the retina), and late clouding of the intraocular lens (IOL). Treating these conditions can be challenging.

The treatment for uveitis is often done in a stepwise manner beginning with topical steroids, moving to oral steroids. If the inflammation is not controlled with steroids an antimetabolite such as methotrexate may be required. There are additional therapies that have been studied but few are considered to be commonly used or of proven benefit.

Finally, if uveitis affects both eyes (or recurs in one eye) it is appropriate to obtain blood testing in order to look for the cause of uveitis.

Hope this was helpful.

Sincerely,

Are there any health problems or diseases that people may contract from sheep?

My family & I are in close, constant contact with sheep, especially during lambing season. Are there any known illness's or disease's that we are at risk of catching? We've been in the sheep biz for over 30 years & my family members & I seem to have had a somewhat out of the ordinary combined medical history (my brother died at 20yo from brain tumor, sis has Adisons disease, I have Uveitis, Mom's had ongoing kidney issues, etc etc.) I'd just like to learn whether sheep are linked with causing any human health problems, & what they are. For example: I've heard that pregnant woman are supposed to avoid contact with sheep. Why & what exactly happens if they are exposed? ....during lambing season we frequently have to "enter" the sheep to pull difficult lambs. We have constant direct contact with blood, after-birth, diseased/sick sheep, dead sheep/lambs, & the asst. meds/vacines we must administer......... so ANY help, answers, advice on the subject would be really appreciated.

Urgent, Dr. Appt tomorrow, what should I ask?

I am going because I have Diabetes, Celiac, arthritis, uveitis, pain, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) and other things.

I am 23 Female and I have never been to a gynecologist, is it time I start going? I can book an appointment through the General Doctor I am seeing tomorrow. But what will the Gynecologist do or check for? or what should I request for them to check for?
----------

Yes, it is time to see a gynecologist for an annual pap smear and exam.

The doctor will check your breasts to make sure all is ok there and also do a pap smear to check for cervical cancer to make sure that's not a problem. She will also check your uterus and ovaries to make sure that they don't have anything out of the normal when it comes to size and shape.

Let the doctor know that this is your first time coming to her and that you would like her to explain everything she does as she does it. This can help you to feel more relaxed.

As for other tests you can ask her about thyroid issues if necessary if you have symptoms that are of concern that can be an indication that something is going on.

I am also going to include the link to a site that may help you find more information. The link is at: http://forums.obgyn.net/womens-health  (+ info)

Could it be something else besides Reiter's Syndrome?

I have been recently diagnosed with Reiter's Syndrome also known as Reactive Arthritis. My doctor says he believes this to be true due to the fact that I have it located in my sacrum. I have had Uveitis but no history of gastric infections, sexually transmitted dieases and also no history of repeative urinary infections. He is basing it off of the fact that I tested positive for HLA-B27. Is it possible that I have something else? Such as Ankylosing Spondylitis? It is in the same family as the Reiter's. I have history of depression which could explain the fatigue but also I do have history of shoulder problems such as arthritis, lower back pain, lower back stiffness. Plus my doc has already told me that I have sacroiliitis. Could this be the underlying cause?
Also additional note. Even though Reiter's Syndrome and Ankylosing is primarily found in young men- Women can develope it as well.
----------

I am an ankylosing spondylitis patient - I was diagnosed almost 15 years ago, but have been symptomatic for more than 20 years.

What you are describing could be Reiters, it could be AS, it could one of several spondylitises.

As you seem to know, there are a number of diseases that fall within that class. Because diagnosis is based on the occurrence of multiple symptoms, it is difficult to differentiate between them. That is why you will frequently find doctors also using the term "nondifferentiated spondyloarthropy".

Note that HLA-B27 is associative, but not diagnostic. AS can be specifically diagnosed via x-rays, but there are plenty of false negatives (it took years for my AS to show up on X-rays although I was symptomatic).

In the end, all of the spondyloarthropies get treated the same way - so missing the exact diagnosis is not critical, as long as you are getting treated.

If you are not doing so already, you might want to see a specialist, which are usually rheumatologists. You want to check in advance to make sure he or she has a history of treating spondyloarthropy patients.

You will find this site very useful, if you haven't come across it yet.

Prednisone weight fears?

I have been ordered to take this for 3 weeks for severe Uveitis.

I am terrlfied as I've already gained about 13 lbs from inactivity due to full body joint inflammation.

Is there an average weight gain? How much facial swelling is likely? I have started dietlng, but will it even help?
----------

I have taken prednisone before and I will tell it is not good at all. It tastes yucky, makes you gain weight, and get horrible mood swings.

Exact amount of weight gain depends on the person. Some people gain lots of weight and some gain very few pounds. Since you are taking this for three weeks, you are not going to become over weight. If you gained weight, then it is going to be single digits.

With prednisone, your body starts to retain more fluid throughout the body not just the face. You are not going to get moon face for sure.
Dieting and exercise will always help with weight.

Do you have rheumatoid arthritis or lupus? I ask because you have joint inflammation and uveitis.  (+ info)
