Can I live a normal life with a varicocele?

Im 14, and Im pretty sure I have a varicocele. It doesn't bother me, just the fact that I know its there makes me a little uneasy. After reading about somethings on the internet, I found that a varicocele is harmless, it only reduces sperm count and related. So if I wasn't planning on having kids, I could live a normal life right?
----------

You can live a normal life but these things have a tendency to get larger and that does create problems. The removal of a this type of growth is a a very simple procedure.

Go see your Physician.  (+ info)

Can I go to work after varicocele surgery?

I am diagnosed with varicocele near my left testicle and I am about to have a surgery.
Can I go to work next day after the surgery? How long will it take to heal completely in the point where I say that I feel no discomfort?
----------

Takes two days until you feel like walking ok (the surgery is in the core of your body so it hurts to do anything at first).
After maybe 5 days to a week you can go to work if it isn't physical at all. You'll be really tender walking though. Like your afraid to stand up cause it hurts. It took a day or so for me to get over the anesthesia too.. but that's not such a big thing lol. I had it last April and it took until November to feel absolutely nothing (I also do martial arts, and i wasn't supposed to fight for that long in case i got hit there). But it's really just a funny pulling feeling, not so much pain after a few weeks. Something went wrong with my nerve for me, i can't feel my inner thigh, but that's really rare so you'll be fine. Just give yourself a few days and lots of ice, and sleep the whole day when you get home from the surgery, it really helps.  (+ info)

My boyfriend had varicocele surgery yesterday, but it still looks the same?

Yesterday my boyfriend had varicocele surgery for a LARGE varicocele on his left testicle. The surgery was supposed to take 30 minutes to an hour but it took over 2 and a half hours. The surgeon said that it was the worst varicocele he had ever seen. However, the testicle still looks the same. You can still see and feel the lumpy veins. How long will it take for it to look better/different?
----------

It'll need about a week for the swelling to go down and about another 2 to 3 weeks for everything to return to normal.

He'll need to heed the doctor's advice regarding underwear and bathing to make sure the healing process works.

He could try using arnica cream to help it heal more quickly. It's an astringent that is supposed to help reduce swelling.

Even after it all calms down, you will still be able to feel the epididymis and the other structures in the scrotum.   (+ info)

Why are all the Varicocele pictures online false?

They all show Varicocele as being above the testis but mine is in the scrotum sack sagging down, not above in the upper area. All the diagrams online show it as being up inside, above the testis.

do the artists not know what Varicocele is?
----------

Why not go ask them ? They aren't on here.

Have u had yours diagnosed ? Or r u guessing ?

A varicocele is simply a vein that has varicosed.  (+ info)

Is it possible to conceive with a varicocele?

I know there are different stages of the varicocele. I do not recall each stage level, but it was said that it is in the middle stage. What are the odds?
----------

Varicocele may have a variable effect on fertility - it raises the temperature within the scrotum (because of the extra blood there) but this may not be enough to affect spermatogenesis or sperm lifespan.

You should just try - and if there is any problem you should see a specialist for testing.  (+ info)

How does a varicocele cause infertility?

And when the varicocele is removed, does normal fertility resume?
Also, has it been proven that the more 'advanced' or 'older' the varicocele, the worse the infertility?

And, if you only have a varicocele on one testicle, does the other testicle function as normal
----------

Theoretically the increase in temperature of the testes caused by a varicocoele might reduce fertility. It would only be of relevance if you were actually having problems conceiving. If this was the case a sperm count would be checked.

In these rare cases, operating on the varicocoele may improve the sperm count.  (+ info)

What is varicocele and how can I deal with it?

Hello,
I have had this on my head for a couple of days and I can't help not being down each time I think this over.
A very good friend of mine has recently been operated for varicocele and according to all other references i have the same illness, my have been feling a certain pain there for quite a while and now it all adds up!
I could use some advice please, firstly, by having this "varicocele" can my sperm become sterile, or what other implications does it have to my general health?
Secondly, can it be treated without an operation? If so, why do I have to do because I really prefere not being cut!:)
And finally, if i have to be operated, is the pariscopic surgery safer and better or should i go fr the old fashioned belly cutting :)))
Look foreward to hearing from you, thanks!

A varicocele is a collection of enlarged (dilated) veins (blood vessels) in the scrotum. It occurs next to and above one or both of the testes (testicles).

The affected veins are those that travel in the spermatic cord. The spermatic cord is like a 'tube' that goes from each testis up towards the lower abdomen. You can feel the spermatic cord above each testis in the upper part of the scrotum. The spermatic cord contains the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the testes to the penis), blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.

Normally, you cannot see or feel the veins in the spermatic cord that carry the blood from the testes. If you have a varicocele, the veins become bigger (they enlarge or dilate) and this makes them more prominent. It is similar to varicose veins of the legs. The size of a varicocele can vary. A large varicocele is sometimes said to look and feel like 'a bag of worms' in the scrotum.

Who gets a varicocele?

Varicoceles are common. About 1 in 7 men develop a varicocele - usually between the ages of 15 and 25. In about half of cases the varicocele is on the left hand side. In just under half of cases there is one on both sides. In a small number of cases it is on the right side. The reason why most occur on the left side is because of the different route the left veins takes out of the scrotum compared to the right.

What are the symptoms?
Varicoceles are usually painless and usually cause no symptoms. Some men may notice a 'dragging' feeling or slight discomfort from their varicocele. This may only occur at the end of a day, especially if you are on your feet all day. The size of a varicocele varies from case to case. Some cannot be seen, only felt. Some are large and can be easily seen. If you lie down, the blood from the veins drains away and the varicocele may seem to disappear. On standing, gravity will cause the blood to pool again and the varicocele reappears.

Are varicoceles serious?

Usually not. In themselves they are usually harmless. Causes of concern include the following:

Possible cause of infertility
Studies have shown that there is a higher rate of infertility in men with a varicocele compared to those who did not have a varicocele. It is thought that the pooled blood causes a slightly higher temperature in the scrotum than normal. This may reduce the number and quality of sperm made by the testis which can reduce fertility. Even if you have a varicocele only on one side, both testes can be warmed by the increased amount of blood pooled in the enlarged veins.

However, most men with varicoceles are not infertile. It is just that the chance of being infertile is increased if you have a varicocele.

Small testis
The testis on the side of the varicocele may become smaller, or not develop as much as the other side. This may contribute to infertility too.

Sudden onset of a varicocele in an older man
Rarely, a varicocele is a symptom of a blockage of a larger vein in the abdomen (see below).

What causes varicoceles?

In most cases, the reason why the veins become larger is because the valves of the small veins in the scrotum do not function well. At intervals along the veins are one-way valves. The valves open to allow blood to flow towards the heart, but close when blood tends to flow backwards.  (+ info)
