What kind of pain killers will I get for my varicocele surgery?

I have a varicocele that I am undergoing an out patient based surgery for in a couple weeks. I am very squeemish and do not like pain at all. How much vicodin can I expect to get? anyway I can ask for extra refils? I like vicodin
----------

You can ask but you probably won't get any refills. Might not even get Vicodin, maybe something milder. I had a testicular cyst removed and spent the night I don't remember getting any Vicodin for that. It doesn't hurt to ask but don't be a winer about it. That just send up a red flag.  (+ info)

Questions about appointment to see if boyfriend has a varicocele?

My boyfriend has a doctors appointment on the 21st to see if he has a varicocele, which he thinks he has. He's wondering what all they'll do there. Is it just like a physical exam and they'll check his testicles? And what will they do if he is diagnosed with a varicocele. He's 17, almost 18 years old.

Also, do they make you take any other tests? Such as an STD or anything like that?

Just wondering, serious answers only please :)
----------

is it at a doctors office or in a hospital??

if its in the docs office, he will just feel the testicle and judging on the size, shape, feeling and pain description given by your boyfriend he will make a judgment on it and will most likely send him to the hospital. There he will have something kind of like an ultrasound that a pregnant woman would have, but obviously on his testicle. That will tell for sure if he has one.

if he does have one ,there are several options. If it is small they can just leave it, prescribe some meds to help reduce the size of it and possibly suggest he wear tighter underwear to give him 'support' to stop it from hurting. They could also recommend surgery to remove it. its a very routine procedure and it can be (and usually is) done under local anesthetic (i.e. he won't be knocked out). There are several different surgical procedures, each having their own pros and cons and different amounts of recovery time. He will most likely not have to stay in the hospital overnight though.

A varicocele is realy no big deal. They are very common and can be treated easily.  (+ info)

any other way to get rid of Varicocele without surgeroy?how is varicocele embolization?

have been operated twice for left varicocele. still is has reocurred. is there any other way to get rid of it without surgerory.
which surgery is the best? i had been operated by ingulinal approach 11 years back.
i have lost faith in operations now.
how is Varicocel Embolization? do reply is Varicocele Embolization successful or is there any other way to get rid of it without surgerory.
----------

Embolization of the Varicocele
Performed under a local anesthetic, a small incision is made into the right side of the groin, through which a small wire is passed into the large vein in the leg. The wire is guided into the veins and drains the left scrotum. A small metal coil is placed in the vein to block it off, effectively doing the same job as surgical ligation. The procedure is usually on an out patient basis. The advantages of embolization include minimal risk of damage to the testicular artery so testicular atrophy is rare. There is a very small risk of developing a hydrocele.
Reocurrance of varicocele after this procedure is between 4% and 11%.

Complications of Embolization of Varicocele
# Migration of the coil out of the vein

# Allergic reactions to the x-ray contrast dye

# Bleeding from the right groin where the wire is inserted  (+ info)

I had varicocele surgery and I dont think it worked?

I had varicocele surgery on October 9th, the doctor said it would take 6-weeks and all for everything to be normal.

I believe its called a Inguinal-Varicocelectomy where he cuts a vertical incision above my left testicule

Well 4-weeks into the surgery, i noticed the veins returned, and its been almost 8 weeks, the veins are all there and i still feel pretty much the same discomfort i had before the surgery.

Now the doctor is saying it can take 1-3months before it takes effect.

WTF!
----------

If you read around that surgery is a pain. All surgery for men down there is a pain I know.

The biggest issue is the skill of the surgeon. I had some bad experiences that led to nerve damage and eventually an orchiectomy and still I have pain. So, definitely seek a second opinion.  (+ info)

How can my husband cure about his bilateral varicocele of his testes?

Anyone get pregnant knowing their husband had a varicocele?

Hi everyone,

My husband has a small varicocele, doctor says it's not a big deal since we already have a 3 year old. I'm just wondering do these things get worse over time? Has anyone gotten pregnant or trying too knowing your husbands have this condition? I'm seriously thinking of trying to get pregnant again in fear that it will get worse.

Had Varicocele when I was young could I be infertile later on?

I had a varicocel ever since birth, but got it fixed at the age of 8 with surgery, and it has been ok. I am 15 now and I can masturbate fine and everything. Could having the varicocele maybe cause me to be infertile later on or me being infertile now and not knowing it?
----------

The answer is most likely no. Varicoceles can inhibit sperm generation, but that effect usually goes away when the defect is corrected. Varicocelectomy can restore fertility to men who had them, and were previously infertile. Since your varicocele was corrected before puberty, the chances of your being infertile because of this are pretty much zero.

Do not depend on your history as a form of birth control or you may be the second one to find out your girlfriend is pregnant, okay, Stud?  (+ info)

How can I help my varicocele?

I have varicocele and have had it for about 6 years now and I was interested in how to make it so it doesn't hurt as much. For me it won't hurt all the time but it it will every once and a while and it can hurt a lot. I have tried to help it by wearing supportive underwear but sometimes it seems like it makes it worse. Anyone got some advise? I can't find much about it online.
----------

• avoid eating any kind of refined carbohydrates

This means eat whole grain foods whenever possible, instead of things like white rice and white bread.

• elevate your scrotum above your heart while lying on your back

I usually prop my legs up against a wall and put two pillows behind my back. This will allow the varicocele to drain. As you are doing this, do the opposite of bearing down (bearing down is when you are taking a poop)

• take some acetaminophen

Acetaminophen is an anti-inflammatory and will affect the varicocele by reducing its swelling while you are in a standing position.  (+ info)

How long after a varicocele Embolization treatment will the Varicocele dissapear?

I had the operation done 2 weeks ago and have seen some changes but there are still very big veins. How long should i expect until these veins are all mostly gone?
----------

If they just removed an embolism it may not really get that much smaller unless they did something to reduce the faulty valves in your spermatic veins. I am sure they did. You still have some swelling from the surgery. If you're not noticing any changes in 2-3 weeks you need to ask the doctor. Make sure your keeping things cool down there so you can reduce the swelling.  (+ info)

Can a Varicocele affect your sex life i.e can it affect ability to ejaculate?

I have a varicocele and I sometimes find it hard to ejaculate could they be connected?
----------

From what I gather from this web site yes it is very possible it has affected your ability to ejaculate.

"Varicocele is a mass of enlarged veins that develops in the spermatic cord, which leads from the testicles (testes ) up through a passageway in the lower abdominal wall (systeminguinal canal) to the circulatory system. The spermatic cord is made up of blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves, and the duct that carries sperm from the body (vas deferens). If the valves that regulate bloodflow from these veins become defective, blood does not circulate out of the testicles efficiently, which causes swelling in the veins above and behind the testicles.

A varicocele can develop in one testicle or both, but in about 85% of cases it develops in the left testicle. The left spermatic vein drains into the renal vein between the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta; these two arteries can compress the renal vein and thus impede bloodflow from the spermatic vein. The right spermatic vein drains into the vein that returns blood to the heart (vena cava) and develops varicocele less often. A one-sided (unilateral) varicocele can affect either testicle.

Because of the impaired circulation of blood created by a varicocele, the blood does not cool as it does normally. The increased temperature of the blood raises the temperature of the testes, which is believed to contribute to infertility, as heat can damage or destroy sperm. The increased temperature may also impede production of new, healthy sperm."
