How dangerous is a Vitamin D deficiancy in a 6 month old baby?

I only just now found out that I needed to be giving my breastfed daughter Vitamin D supplements. In addition to breastmilk she eats one meal of peas, green beans, or sweet potatoes each day. I will start giving her extra Vitamin D right away, but I am so scared that I've harmed her bone development for life since she probably hasn't gotten enough Vitamin D until now. Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to make up for the last 6 months? Thanks!
----------

Honey, if there was a serious issue about Vitamin D deficiency in breastfed babies then we would have entire generations of people with rickets and poor bone development. This, as far as I am concerned, is just another ploy by Major Corporations, to sell more product. It's not harmful to give the vitamin and if baby or you gets no sunlight at all then it's a good thing but it's gotten way too much hype over the last few years. If you truly needed the supplements before hand they wouldn't have let you leave the hospital without them.  (+ info)

How much vitamin D does a two year old need daily?

Just out of curiosity i want to know how much vitamin D does a two year old need daily? Do the vitamins that you buy at the store have a sufficient amount, or should i be giving her lots of vitamin D milk too? I know that it wouldn't hurt to give her that too, but i just wanted to know. Nothing wrong with being curious, right?
----------

The current recommended Vitamin D intake for children is 400 IU per day. You would need to have your child drink 4 8 ounce glasses of milk per day to reach that level. 2 year olds only need 2 cups of milk per day, though. You don't want to push too much milk, especially with a 2 year old, as it can fill up tiny tummies and cause them to not eat well. You can ask your pediatrician about a Vitamin D supplement, but he/she may suggest a children's multi vitamin. Just read the labels on the vitamins and choose one with adequate Vitamin D. When it comes to nutrition, balanced is best so avoid too much of any one thing. If your child also like yogurt and cheese, check those labels as well. Even with cow's milk, the vitamin D is fortified as it doesn't naturally contain adequate amounts of Vitamin D. The natural source of Vitamin D is sunshine. If your child is eating a wide variety of food and spending some time out in the sun, she is probably getting adequate amounts of Vitamin D. Check with your pediatrician for his/her recommendations about supplements.  (+ info)

How do I get vitamin d and what is true about the sun?

I don't drink milk for health reasons and I can't afford a vitamin d supplement. The only option I have is to get it from the sun. Are there any other ways to get it and does the sun really age you and cause skin cancer if your diet's good? Personal experiences and scientific websites or books as sources please.

I read it in the newspaper that if u put yourself under the sun for 20 minutes ,the body will be filled with Vitamin D,then you will not get skin cancer.  (+ info)

What could be the cause of a very low Vitamin D level in recent blood work?

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and I am 27 (I have had it since the age of 7). My recent blood work just came back showing very low Vitamin D levels, even though they were normal 3 months ago. I have to go on Vitamin D treatments for the next 16 weeks. I am just nervous because I have not been feeling good lately and I don't know if there could be something else going on. Can anyone help with some insight?

Try getting out in the sun for about 15 minutes a day, that should help.  (+ info)

How do I give liquid Vitamin D to my baby?

I just gave a birth to my beautiful daughter. Her pediatrician gave me a bottle of liquid Vitamin D since I breastfeed exclusively. I tried to give it to my daughter, but she didn't take it at all. I heard that I should mix the vitamin with my milk, but there is a good amount of vitamin that I have to give, and I can pump so much every time. I'm also afraid that she will get used to the bottle and won't eat from my breast any more. I'm hoping to get good answers from breastfeeding moms. Thanks.
----------

Just put the dropper into her cheek and gently squirt it in her mouth. Don't do it directly down her throat. Don't worry if she doesn't get it all. My daughter is excluslvely breastfed and is almost 5 months old. I think I have given her the vitamin D, maybe 6 or 7 times total. ( I always forgot) and she is fine. Some doctor's don't think they actually need it, since they get enough through mother's milk. If you do want to give it to her, just get as much in her as you can, really it won't be a big deal if she spits some out.

You can mix it with your milk that is fine too, but like I said, I wouldn't stress over it. Since your baby is so young, you should try to avoid bottles until breastfeeding is established. I know that it may be painful, it was for me, but trust me it does get better. Eventually your baby wlll be an efficient feeder and you will be better at it too. Don't give up, it is hard, but there is such a sense of accomplishment when it is all worked out. Get a good lactation consultant if you need to, they can be a real life saver.  (+ info)

Is time of day important for synthesizing vitamin D from sunlight?

I have low vitamin D levels and need to start staying in the sun more. The problem is that I have very fair skin and can't tolerate full sun exposure during the middle of the day in the summer. Is early morning sun or late afternoon/evening sunlight sufficient?

NO  (+ info)

What causes low vitamin D levels apart from lack of sunlight?

I am always outside walking my dog, but have just been told I have severely low levels of Vitamin D. What am I doing wrong?
----------

Vitamin D deficiency can result from inadequate intake coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders, or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders. Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization, and leads to bone softening diseases, rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and possibly contributes to osteoporosis. Research has indicated that vitamin D deficiency is linked to colon cancer; conflicting evidence links vitamin D deficiency to other forms of cancer.

you can also get Vitamin D from other food sources too, like milk, fish, cereal, mushrooms, eggs, bread, yogurt.  (+ info)

Can you use Vitamin D tablets to make your hair grow longer?

Because i know that sun makes your hair longer, which is vitamin D. So if i take the tablets will it be ok?
----------

I think it is Vitamin A that promotes healthy skin, hair and nails, but any nutritional deficiency will affect your hair. It shouldn't hurt to take a good multivitamin every day as few people eat as they really should these days. Don't overdo it as some vitamins can be toxic in high amounts.

Your hair is only going to grow about a half inch per month, but if you keep it strong and healthy, it will split and break less and seem to grow faster. Avoid perms, hair coloring, curling or straightening irons, and over drying with a hair blower if you really want your hair to be healthy as they are the things most likely to damage it.  (+ info)

What could be a possible reason for a vitamin D deficiency?

I drink milk everyday, I eat a vitamin D enriched cereal with milk, I take a multivitamin, and I eat yogurt, not everyday but at least twice a week.
Yet, I have a Vitamin D deficiency. What could the reason be?
I get a lot of sun too. I live in the south and I'm outside quite a bit.
----------

The best source of vitamin D is sunlight onto bare skin. Dietary sources are usually not that high in vitamin d, even if you eat all those things regularly would would maybe get 50% of your RDI from them. The highest dietary source is cod liver oil by far.

There are two types of vitamin D put in supplements, D2 and D3. D3 is the more natural form and is far more effective than the D2 variant as it converts to the usable form in the body at a much higher rate.

Also with supplements, the amount that actually get absorbs matters a lot too. I've been using nfuze (link below) which is the first multi-vitamin with nanotechnology for the maximum absorption of the vitamins and nutrients.

It can take a while to fix a vitamin D deficiancy, you would need to take either cod liver oil or something like nfuze and try and maximise your sun exposure for a while to get your levels right up.  (+ info)

How long do you need to spend in the sun to get vitamin D?

The weather's been really nice lately, and I've been spending a lot more time outside. How long do you need to be in the sun without sunscreen to get the vitamin D you need for the day? Just curious. If anyone wants to lecture me about skin cancer, save your keystrokes. I've heard it a million times.
----------

You need about 15 minutes in the sun to get your daily amount of vitamin D.  (+ info)
