How low does your % of vitamin D have to be before it is considered severely low?

Can a lack of sunlight/improper nutrition really cause vitamin D levels to be very low, or do very low levels suggest a different cause?
----------

Absolutely. You should get your D levels tested -- you can do it yourself, check out the referenced website. Really without getting a blood test there is no way to know. But the likelihood is that if you live in a climate that has a winter, and you use sunscreen, and you don't supplement, you are probably D deficient. It's not so much nutrition related since there aren't very many foods that contain D.

<40ng/ml is considered sub-optimal. 40-60 optimal. I have been supplementing with 5000 IU/day for a few months, got my blood levels tested and I was at 56. I'm a 170lb male living in Pennsylvania, for reference.  (+ info)

Is it safe to take an extra vitamin D pill and vitamin C pill with a prenatal vitamin?

I have read that stretch marks are caused internally not externally and that vitamin C and D can help prevent them. I am currently pregnant and am taking prenatal vitamins. I do not want to take extra D and C if it is going to hurt me or my baby.
----------

I would not take any extra vitamins along with prenatal vitamins. I'm not sure which vitamins you take but mine has the daily recommended amount of vitamin C in them. I also do not suggest self medicating yourself (even if it is just vitamins) without consulting your physician.  (+ info)

What are the issues if a person is diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency and is 29 yrs old ?

OK, I know about sunshine and also Vit D for good strong bones, but a 29 yr old friend was diagnosed and put on a rather expensive prescription for Vitamin D. What are the "problems" associated with low vitamin D beside the sun and bone issue ? THanks

Your immune system is compromised and your more prone to cancer and heart disease are just a couple i'm aware of.  (+ info)

What are the side effects of Vitamin D as a steroid?

I know that vitamin D is not a vitamin, but a secosteroid, what are the side effects of using this steroid? My friend is using it because he belives that since it is called "vitamin D" It is essential as a supplement. Despite me explaining otherwise. So i would appricate it if anyone could provide me with details of the bad side effects.
To the self proclaimed *chemist* Vitamin D is a secosteroid, which has an identical structure to a steroid, except one of the rings is broken
----------

Vitamin D is *not* a steroid.

Steroids have a specific chemical structure. Vitamin D does not have this.

In response to your edits...exactly. It is not cyclic, therefore it is not a steroid. Call it secosteroid, call it a molecular precursor to a steroidal ring skeleton, call it whatever. But it's not a steroid. Ring cleavage significantly changes biological/chemical activity. For a few examples that come to mind, check out penicillin (or any analog thereof), any prostaglandin, erythronolide, hirsutene, crown ethers, etc.

But just because it isn't a steroid doesn't mean it's not a bad thing. I would like to add to below comments that any vitamin can cause similar woes when taken in excess.  (+ info)

What are the side effects of overdose in Vitamin D and calcium?

What are the side effects of overdose in Vitamin D and calcium?

Just curious.
----------

Excessive intakes of calcium (more than 3,000 mg per day) may result in elevated blood calcium levels, a condition known as hypercalcemia. If blood levels of phosphorous are low at the same time as calcium levels are high, hypercalcemia can lead to soft tissue calcification. This condition involves the unwanted accumulation of calcium in cells other than bone. A Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for calcium of 2,500 milligrams per day was established by the National Academy of Sciences in 1997.  (+ info)

What does vitamin D pills to to your body?

Im 14 but will be 15 this month and im on depo provera (the shot) I've been on it since January. Today I started taking the calcium pills that they gave me to keep my bones strong. Does depo provera make you gain weight and does vitamin d increase hair growth and breast growth? Also i have a high metabolism and im 5'1 and 82 pounds.
----------

I am most concerned that you are receiving DepoProvera at your age. Your prescribing physician is clearly aware that it appears to promote osteoporosis when administered to girls of your age, hence the Vitamin D. There is however no clear cut evidence that this helps in this instance.

Vitamin D does not cause weight gain, hair or breast growth. The Depot injection can sometimes cause all of these things however.  (+ info)

How much Calcium and Vitamin D pills a day?

I currently take 1200 mg of calcium and 400 mg of vitamin D a day (two pills a day). On the package it says this much of the pills a day will ensure safe bone development. But what if I take 3 pills a day, would that cause me to grow any faster? Is this dangerous?
----------

Taking more than the recommended amounts would be very unwise.

If you take very large amounts of one vitamin or mineral it can sometimes cause an imbalance in your body. For example, an overload of calcium can cause a deficiency of magnesium so if you take a large amount of calcium perhaps you should also take a magnesium supplement. A common supplement is both calcium and magnesium in the same pill.  (+ info)

How do I know if have a vitamin D deficiency?

I eat healthy, but I'm lactose intolerant and can't drink milk or eat most dairy products. Also, I don't spend much time in the sun because my skin is extremely pale and I burn almost instantly. Do I need to take a vitamin D supplement? I'm sure that I don't get enough vitamin D, although I don't have symptoms right now.
----------

Your doctor can run tests for vitamin D as well. When getting a supplement, do get a good quality one and look for a D3 gelcap or pill instead of a D2 formulation. There are brands out there that list D3 in the ingredients list. Good luck.  (+ info)

When should I transition from formula to Vitamin D milk?

My son is 9 months old and is eating some off the table and is eating stage 3 baby food and some graduate puffs. When should I start giving him vitamin D milk. Is now too early or could I start him on some vitamin D milk? I appreciate everyone's help.
----------

Human beings should not drink milk from a cow. It's that simple. So many illnesses and afflictions in children (and adults for that matter) could be cured if they would just cut out milk and milk products. There are tons of doctors, organizations, websites, etc...that will tell you the same thing, so you can do your own research. IF you have to buy cow's milk at least make sure it is organic.

Ever heard of Monsanto? Well, they put growth hormones and antibiotics and GMO feed into cows that CAN hurt humans indefinitely!
