Will I still get enough Vitamin D if I put sunscreen on?

Cus I had a Vitamin D deficiency before so I need the sun :P but I burn easily and I don't want to get any more freckles.
So if I put sunscreen on, will I still get my Vitamin D, but prevent burning?
So if it won't prevent freckles, does that mean I'd still tan (however gradual) even with sunscreen on?
----------

No, putting sunscreen on reduces your Vitamin D production by 99.9%.

Sunscreen prevents Ultraviolet Light B from getting absorbed and UVB is responsible for producing Vitamin D by your Vitamin D receptors in your cells.

The answer above is totally wrong and Vitamin D is a pre-hormone which is converted to active form of Vitamin D after getting sunshine from a cholesterol.

Get 15-20minutes of sunshine between 10 am - 3 pm. Because this is the time when UVB comes in and use sunscreen after getting some sunshine because now you want to avoid UVA from burning your skin.

Remember. It's a misconception that people think you still can make Vitamin D with sunscreen on. Dr. Michael Hollick, who has been researching about Vitamin D over a decade, proved all this and the studies show that EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE HAVE BEEN USING MORE SUNSCREEN FOR THE LAST THREE DECADES, SKIN CANCER RATE INCREASED MORE THAN WHEN PEOPLE DIDN'T USE SUNSCREEN. THIS IS BECAUSE UVA IS NOT BLOCKED BY SUNSCREEN AND UVB, THE MAKER OF VITAMIN D, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, FIGHTS CANCER, DIABETES, INCREASES EFFICACY OF YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM, STRENGTHENS BONES, ETC.

So put sunscreen on your face ONLY to make Vitamin D from other parts of your body(arms, legs, etc)

And I think freckles are hot :D  (+ info)

Can I take vitamin D supplements instead of giving them to my baby?

I am breastfeeding twins and find that I am constantly forgetting to give them their vitamin D supplements (they also don't like them). I live in northern Canada where there is questionable amounts of Vitamin D in the sunlight according to professionals. Would they get their required dosage of vitamin D through my breastmilk if I took a vitamin D supplement?
----------

I also live in Northern Canada (Alberta) where there was questionable amounts. I was told that it is through the winter and spring months you need to `be concerned`. Because it is summer, you should be perfectly fine to forgo it altogether. There is MORE than enough sunlight for the next few months. Alternatively, you can get the 1 drop `D-Drops`. It is literally 1 drop of non flavored liquid.

As a side note though, a vitamin D supplement cant hurt you either. But if you take a daily walk with the kiddos, they will get enough!  (+ info)

How long does Vitamin D take to activate?

How long does Vitamin D (D3) take to convert to it's activated form once it enters the bloodstream?
----------

Despite being called a 'vitamin', Vitamin D is actually a pro-hormone. Production can begin within minutes of sun exposure. ( longer for darker skinned people) Conversion or 'activation' takes longer. The liver converts Vitamin D into calcidiol and the kidneys convert it into calcitriol. This wouldn't show up in your blood for about 24 hrs.

Hope that helps!!

CAUTION: You need Calcium to absorb Vitamin D. If there isn't sufficient Calcium in your blood/diet your body will pull it from your bones. Not good!!  (+ info)

What is the best Vitamin D to add to a healthy life style?

I have found Vitamin D2, and D3, and regular D. The D2 and D3 appear to be "irradiated" and that kinda scares me. Also how much should an adult 25-35 years old, male or female take daily?
----------

The recommended daily Upper Limit for vitamin D is 10,000 IU, however, safety studies indicate that up to 40,000 IU may be safe for most people. If you wish to take more than one daily serving of this product, you should check with your physician.

I would recommend Isotonix Vitamin D with K2
http://www.marketamerica.com/lcbeauty/product-13324/isotonix-vitamin-d-with_k2.htm#

Each serving contain 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 & 45 mcg of Vitmain K2.

Vitamin D3 is used because it's the metabolically active form of vitamin D, along with vitamin K2, a form of vitamin K which supports vascular health and calcium utilization. Vitamin K2 is included because of its unique partnership with vitamin D. Vitamins K and D work together to promote healthy calcium absorption and utilization. Vitamin K supports the delivery of calcium to the bones and helps maintain arterial health.

With Isotonix line, since it's in isotonic form by adding certain amount of water to one capful of powder (it tastes great too!), vitamins won't stay in stomach and will go to intestine within 5 minutes so you are looking for absorption rate of 90% and higher, higher absorption rate even compare to IV injection.

Not all supplements are made equally. Never look for price when selecting supplements, look for values and potency and absorption rate because our health is priceless!  (+ info)

how does milk loose its vitamin d if it is exposed to sunlight?

I read somewhere that milk can loose their vitamin D if it is exposed to sunlight which is why milk is usually in a carton box

how does it loose it and why?
----------

Vitamin D is derived when a cholesterol compound, occurring in the skin, is exposed to sunlight. This happens with the process of getting milk from cows. The vitamin D added to foods serves the purpose of preventing the deficiency from occurring in persons who may not be exposed much to sunlight and who fail to consume foods that are fortified with vitamin D, such as milk. Leaving milk in the sun causes a severe deterioration in its quality

******aHAH I found the answer!!!*******

The old familiar paper milk carton is still the best package for milk when you consider the purpose of the package -- maintaining product hygiene and protecting the nutrients and flavor. Light, artificial or natural, is an enemy to the nutrients in milk. According to a 1986 Cornell University Study, milk loses a little over 50% of its vitamin A after 12 hours of exposure to light, and 90% of its vitamin A after 24 hours. Glass and translucent plastic packages offer no protection against this light intrusion. Consider how long the milk containers sit in the grocer's refrigerator before being purchased and consider again which package contains the more nutritious product at the time of purchase.

The aseptic package is one of the most environmentally responsible packages on the market today. In 1996 the aseptic package was awarded the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development. No other package has received this environmental honor. The Tellus Institute, an independent environmental research firm, conducted a study examining the environmental impacts of various single-serve packaging materials. Their conclusion was that the aseptic carton was one of the best single-serve packaging choices for the environment.  (+ info)

How about the new study that today's kids have a vitamin D deficiency?

Buy them Vitamin D supplements, or better yet, get them away from the computer, out of the house and into the sunshine.
There's a novel concept.
----------

I wish schools would take the time to have kids outside (when the weather's nice) more often. Like make a point to teach science and gym classes outside routinely, for example. Have you read about the vitamin D deficiency and autism theory? I think they're finally on to something there! Very interesting.

Is there a difference in gaining D-vitamin on your skin between sunbathing and going to a solarium?

If I want to get tanned for a certain amount, is there a difference how much D-vitamin my skin will produce?
----------

UV rays themselves don't have Vit-D. It helps your body absorb it. But either way (the sun or tanning beds), you will see results. Just wear sunscreen, it will still help with the absorption even though you are blocking some of the rays. But you have to have Vit-D in your system for it to work.  (+ info)

Can I give my 2 and a half year old both a multivitamin and a vitamin d supplement?

We are trying to protect against the h1n1 virus and other seasonal flues so we did some research and found out that Vitamin D is good for you. We dont get much sun where we live and my daughter doesn't drink enough milk to get the vitamins from it so I was wondering if it would be safe to give her both her daily multi-vitamin and an extra childrens vitamin d supplement?
No rude comments please!
----------

Your system doesn't make vitamin D but you can also get too much and cause problems. I am vitamin D deficient and get prescription supplements weekly but my Dr said only take what she gives me, it's dangerous to get too much. I would call the pediatrician first and ask before giving Vit.-D supplements. I don't know what an OD to a child would do but I would check with her pediatrician first. I am a grown woman and my Dr says No extra supplements even though my Vit. D was almost nonexistent. I've taken prescription supplements for 16 weeks and it's still not up to normal yet. My 10 month old grandson got the swine flu, he had it for a week and did just fine. If you follow Doctors orders if your child gets it, she should be fine. My 13 year old granddaughter got it also, she's fine and her Dad got it, he's fine. It lasts a week. Plenty of fluids or they dehydrate quickly. The 2 grandkids had it at the same time.  (+ info)

Is vitamin D milk good to drink when you are pregnant?

I am 12 weeks, 4 days pregnant, and love to drink Vitamin D milk, I drink 1-2 glasses a day. Is is good for me since I am pregnant?
----------

Absolutely, I am 35 weeks pregnant and my doctor discovered I was vitamin D deficient when I found out I was pregnant and now I have to take a supplement as well as 3 glasses of milk a day to make sure I am getting enough, vitamin D ensures the body will absorb calcium, if you don't get enough then the baby will take the calcium from your bones and teeth. I have also found since taking this, my hair and nails are growing like they have never grown before lol. I will be carrying on taking the supplement long after my baby is born that's for sure.

Good luck and Congratulations.  (+ info)
