Water intoxication?

If i drink too fast..
can i kill myself?
No matter what the liquid?
Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits, ironically by that which makes up the majority of it - water.

WATER INTOxICATION!!!!?

i weigh 115 pouns and i want to drink at much water as possible but how much is too much in 1 day so far ive only hit 2 liters
----------

you can over hydrate yourself and dilute your electrolytes by drinking too much water. It can cause your heart to stop due to what is called the sodium potassium exchange required for muscles to contract. 64 oz per day is plenty.  (+ info)

How many water would i have to drink to get water intoxication?

How many glasses of water would i have to drink in 10 minutes, to get water intoxication?

I weigh 137 lbs.
(P.S. No, not going to use it for suicidal stuff :P I am interested cause i didn't even know water intoxication existed, i learned about it today and i found it exiting, so i'm quite interested in it)
----------

I wouldn't suggest drinking more than you feel comfortable with in your stomac. If you do this you should be ok. I think you could drink a gallon an hour all day, but why would you? To much water will put a strain on your system and I wouldn't recoment more than a quart an hour unless you are actually thirsty for more if you've been dehydrated. Drinking enough water to hurt yourself isn't easy, and your body won't crave enough to do that.

I think you could kill yourself with a gallon of water if you drank it to fast.  (+ info)

Is it possible to suffer from water intoxication drinking about 3 to 4 liters after a heavy meal?

Because that's how much I feel the need to drink, or I'd get all cranky and lazy. Foods make me thirsty! It's odd because until 2 months ago, I used to avoid drinking water completely, and rely on sodas and juices.

I know water intoxication occurs when the water and sodium balance is disturbed, but the heavy and salty meal should take care of that, right?

Additional details: I'm not diabetic
I am talking about over the course of a couple of hours.
----------

It depends why you are drinking so much water.
Because your food is salt, very sweet, carbohydrate heavy?
All those make us thirsty.
If you are drinking because you are genuinely thirsty it's probably ok.
If you are drinking because you think you should or you will be ill it's time to talk to a doctor.

"Trust your thirst instinct to make sure you get enough fluids and, of equal importance, void frequently" (Zelman, 2009). Interviewer Kathleen Zelman, continues Perlow's observations and writes "If you follow your thirst, you won't go wrong...pre-modern man never ran around sipping on a water bottle. A dry mouth indicated it was time to run to the stream for a drink."  (+ info)

What is the maximum amount of water you can drink in one sitting to avoid water intoxication?

I know the human body doesn't NEED more than 64 ounces of water. I am just wondering what the maximum amount of water you can drink in one sitting to avoid water intoxication is. What about in one day?
----------

No such number. It depends on you, your activity level, and environmental conditions.

The 64 ounces is a ballpark average, not a magic number. The concern about water intoxication and or hyponatremia is that you drink so much you wash out and/or dilute electrolytes in your system. This can, in extreme cases, result in a misfire of the electrical signals causing your heart to beat.

You need to go by thirst and kidney/bladder function. If your pee is more than slightly yellow, you're not drinking enough. In the bathroom every 20 minutes, you're drinking too much.

On long run/bike sessions in the summer heat, I'll go through as much as 200 ounces in the course of a workout. On a rest day in the office A/C, 64 may be more than enough. After one Ironman race in 95° heat, I drank nearly a gallon after finishing before I felt good enough to go for a cheeseburger and a couple of beers.  (+ info)

How many liters constitute water intoxication?

How many liters of water constitutes water intoxication and what are the symptoms of water intoxication? Thanks.
----------

Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by over-consumption of water.[1] Normal, healthy (both physically and nutritionally) individuals have little to worry about accidentally consuming too much water. Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication in normal individuals have resulted either from water drinking contests, in which individuals attempt to consume more than 10 liters (3 gallons) of water over the course of just a few minutes, or long bouts of intensive exercise during which electrolytes are not properly replenished, yet massive amounts of fluid are still consumed.  (+ info)

How much ice can you eat in a day without getting water intoxication?

I know it takes more time for your body to use water when it's too cold or too hot because it has to bring it to a better temperature so it'd probably be easier to get water intoxication from ice than normal water, but could I eat a 16 pound bag of it?
I LOVE ice, trust me there will be absolutely nothing keeping me from eating all of it in one day, it doesn't hurt my teeth or my throat or anything so I'm just curious if it could be at all bad for me
----------

Eating ice is really bad for your teeth. A dentist once told me that it's like eating rocks. I'm sure shaved ice or ice chips is probably ok. A 16 lb bag of ice is probably equivalent to several gallons of water. You are prone to water intoxication if you don't pee. Water in, water out you would probably not get water intoxication.  (+ info)
