What's the diagnostic tool to find out bowel obstruction in Bariatric Surgery altered people?

The CT Scan it gives a jolt of the equivalent of 5000 X-Rays.

So good to be thin and "healthy" after undergoing frankenstein inspired surgery...
Emily so you know what 5000 X Rays do to your chances of getting Cancer?
----------

I've had bariatric surgery. The first time it was suspected I might have an obstruction they did do a CT scan, however, the second occurrence, they
performed an upper endoscopy. It's painless (you're briefly placed under sedation) and the Doctor examines the esophagus and pouch with an instrument with a light/camera attached. But I believe the common protocol is the CT scan.

*I know X-Ray/Radiation increases chances of Cancer, but if one has a bowel obstruction, what would you reckon your chances are with an Ischemic (dead) bowel?  (+ info)

Can Pepcid (h2 blocker) cause a bowel obstruction or partial bowel obstruction?

Is it possible for an H2 blocker like pepcid to cause a bowel obstruction or even a partial bowel obstruction?

Even if it was only taken a few times?
Thanks for the info Anasthasia, however it doesn't answer my question, lol
----------

hii Lex,
Famotidine (Pepcid AC) is the most potent H2 blocker. The most common side effect of famotidine is headache, which occurs in 4.7% of people who take it. Famotidine is virtually free of drug interactions but the FDA has just issued a warning on its use in patients with kidney problems

Famotidine is excreted primarily by the kidney. This can pose a danger to people with kidney problems. Physicians are now being advised by the US Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada to reduce the dose and increase the time between doses in patients with kidney failure. Use of the drug in those with impaired kidney function can affect the central nervous system and may result in anxiety, depression, insomnia or drowsiness, and mental disturbances.

OK. I hope you will be glad with my answer.
Takecare there.

What is the effectiveness of a tonsillectomy in an 18 year old male with Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome?

Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) is a variant of Sleep Apnea.
----------

What does the doctor say. Have you gone for a second opinion. My doc does not recommend a TA in adults. IT is painful and has long recovery. also surgery causes scar tissue which is sometimes worse than that of the original problems.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10208219

this study says there is not a lot of documented proof of the effectiveness in surgery in UARS.

Most of the research I have done recommends cpap.  (+ info)

What are your experiences with tracheomalacia or floppy airway?

My son was diagnosed with this after being born, I've always thought it was from him having his cord around his neck twice and up under his arm. He has yet to go to a pulmonologist, but I have the number (it's a very long drive to the specialist). What are your experiences with it? Did they grow out of this problem? How did you help your baby?
----------

My son had this (he's 11 now). It was a difficult time, I had to give up breastfeeding at only about 6 weeks or so because he kept aspirating (fluid in lungs) liquids that he was drinking - his chest sounded awful. Also he had asthma and bronchiolitis - he was admitted I think 5-6 times !! It the blur.. I recall we were given a way to thicken his formula - cut a large hole in bottle. I can't remember at what age so don't follow this type of advice without consulting a doc. but the thick liquids really helped. I moved him to solid food much much faster than my other kids - he was eating off a spoon some thick formula and mashed banana at quite a young age, but that really seemed to help him. He outgrew all this - but even as a toddler when he drank water or juice he would very often cough and splutter since it would easily "go down the wrong pipe" It seems he did that quite a while, but nothing serious. He also outgrew all his asthma. Today he is very strong and healthy, plays sports. He still seems to get chest colds a lot harder than my other kids and gets more congested, but overall health, normal, strong, etc. Good luck with the appointment - I highly recommend it !! (my informaiton may also be 11 years old and the advice may be different - but just know they do grow out of it)  (+ info)

How do I get my mom to quit smoking after bowel obstruction surgery?

Had emergency surgery. Will be coming home soon. She has been smoking since she was a teen & she is coming to my place so I can watch after her. How can I get her no to smoke? she has emphazema too. Please help. It's been a horrible scarry week. Don't need anymore scares. 6 kids total & we all want her to quit. Thanks
----------

Well, I recommend for her to try the Gradual Reduction method...that should prevent her from having any bad withdrawal symptoms like if she were to just go 'cold turkey'. There are a few ways to assist in quitting via gradual reduction of nicotine levels, and actually stop her from inhaling the nearly 4000 other harmful chemicals included in cigarettes; one of the newest is the electronic cigarette, which only uses water and nicotine, so she wouldn't be completely destroying her lungs while she's at it, but she would still get her nicotine fix for the time being. Over time she would need to lower the dose of nicotine to wean her off of it completely; there's a lot more information about that particular method at http://smokefreeme.info/methods/gradualreduction.html . Best of luck, I know it's hard!!  (+ info)

How long would someone have to be constipated for the fecal matter to get compacted into a bowel obstruction?

Or how long would the fecal matter have to be compacting to become one? I mean a medically classifiable bowel instruction. I know this is an obscure question... Hopefully there's a doctor out there who can answer this.
----------

That is a very serious matter. It can be related to other health problems going on and even cause them. If the person is in ill health, caretakers may not even notice the problem building.

I don't think there is any standard answer to this question. Different circumstances can produce a bowel obstruction in a shorter or longer period of time.

I am not a doctor, but I have seen this problem being ignored in a hospital despite the patient's complaints. So, if you think this is happening, talk to the doctor, director of nursing, or whoever could and wil do something about it.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have a bowel obstruction without pain?

I feel pressure in my abdomen, and I can't go. I'm not in any pain, at least not yet. I tried dulcolax but so far it hasn't done anything. Would mineral oil be a safe thing to try?
----------

It depends if you have pressure with pain as well. I would try increasing fiber and water intake - make sure you do both as fiber without water can be constipating itself.   (+ info)

What effect would complete obstruction of the pancreatic duct have on?

on the exocrine and endocrine functions.
sorry!
----------

Honey - The exocrine part of the pancreas is the larger part. It produces enzymes to digest food. Its secretions travel from the pancreas by way of the pancreatic duct into the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) where it mixes with and helps further digest food. If the duct were completely blocked, there would be a backup of secretions which would then begin to kill and destroy exocrine cells, leading to inflammation, acute pancreatitis, possibly pancreatic cysts, and acute abdominal pain.
The endocrine part of the pancreas contains different cells which have the endocrine function of producing insulin needed to digest sugar and prevent diabetes. The insulin does not need a pancreatic duct but slowly oozes out into lymph channels, into the blood circulation, and around the body. Loss of this endocrine tissue leads to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and diabetes. Blocking the pancreatic duct would not affect this endocrine function.  (+ info)
