do opiates cause anterograde amnesia? like would it ever be possible to not rememberafter being on vicodin?

According to the CDC, the SDPD DAWN (drug targeting unit) and the prescription information in the PDR, opiates including Vicodin do not cause temporary memory loss. However,if you take far more tablets than prescribed you run the risk of passing out. Anterograde amnesia is far more likely when using benzodiazepines (xanax, valium, antivan) and the hypnotic class of drug know as imidazopyridines (Ambient) and Temazepam (Restori).

I reviewed this medications with my MD and read the PDR. Why I take Vicodin ES for migraines and when needed I take Restoril to get to sleep if the vicodin doesn't kill the migraine. And believe me, Restoril can cause a temporary memory loss because it happened to me. Luckily nothing bizarre happened, But I have never had that problem with Vicodin or the other pain killer they gave me when I shattered ever rib on my left side in a climbing accident. That was Percocet.  (+ info)

What can I ask my doctor to give me to induce anterograde amnesia?

I am a paranoid schizophrenic, I have a laundry list of phobias, and several of the top 10 are converging soon. I need to go to a urologist combining fear of being naked (#1), fear of being touched by strangers (#7), fear of having my genitals touched (#2), fear of doctors (#4).

I do not want to remember this. I do not want to be aware of what is happening to me. I have a scrip for Lorazepam for my anxiety, and know it can cause amnesia in high doses, but I don't know at which dose, nor at which dose it becomes dangerous. Please help me.
I am not looking to induce retrograde anmesia (to forget the triggers for these phobias, most of which are locked behind memory blocks anyway.) I'm trying to induce anterograde amnesia. How much lorazepam, or other benzodiazepams would I need to take to likely induce anterograde amnesia prior to my appointment so that I do not remember the appointment. I have an eidetic memory, and if I remember a traumatic event at all, it will haunt me for the rest of my life. I will relive the event every time something reminds me of it. This is what I'm trying to avoid.
Tl;dr What drug, and in what dose, to make me unaware of what's happening to me during a doctor's visit.

Could multiple concussions sustained in football cause slight Anterograde amnesia?

I sustained 6 concussions in football/lacrosse during highschool. Since then my short term memory having to do with conversations has been completely horrible. I forget people names shortly after they tell me them. I completely lose what I am having a conversation about when the conversation lasts to long. If for some reason the conversation is obstructed I forget what I was talking about before the conversation was obstructed. I have slightly distorted long term memory, in which I remember rough areas of my past but the fine details are confusing and change with time. I do remember things from short term with a little push from the other person ( if they tell me what they had previously said and remind me of the topic).

Is it possible to have a heart and/or lung transplant while having amnesia?

I need to know if it is possible or not. I'm working on a project for school. The kind of amnesia is the retrograde amnesia, which cause people to forget things before a bad event happens.

How can I cope with a close friend that has amnesia?

We were insanely attached at one point.
2 days ago he was in a car wreck. He has amnesia now.
It's breaking my heart.

Most cases of amnesia are transient.
Have patience. Be kind. It`s not just about your loss- but about his recovery.  (+ info)

What does it feel like to get your memory back after amnesia?

I know that some people may suffer from amnesia due to a hard hit on the head or maybe traumatic events etc and lose their memory.

But what does it feel like when you get your memory back? Does it all come back at once or does it come back in pieces. Is it an emotional experience once you remember everything?

Thanks for any contributions!
----------

I've never had amnesia. So I don't know what it's like to actually get your memories back. But I'll tell you what I believe it's like.

You have forgotten everything or maybe just some things, so you continue to live your life again. With these missing pieces, you're just starting to get your life back on track, when something from your past triggers a memory. You might be walking down a street, and then you'll like get this "vision" in your head of a memory. You'll be confused at what it was, but then you'll realise that you just got back a memory of something that happened down or near that said street.

It's confusing if you forget people, and then all of a sudden, you remember who they are. It's scary, and as you said it would be very emotional. Because you could get a memory back, but be missing some of the pieces, or forget something that happened prior to that certain memory.

I'm sorry, I can't help you exactly, because as I said I have never had amnesia. This is just from my knowledge.  (+ info)

Whats the effect of Benzodiazepines on Dopamine etc, is sedation and amnesia just start up symptoms?

How do benzos like Ativan Xanax et al effect Dopamine and other neurotransmitters? Also is sedation and amnesia just start up symptoms?
I am starting on Ativan 0.5 mg 3 times blog with 15 mg Lexapro taper.
----------

This question is very involved and technical. I suggest you do a Yahoo! web search on Ativan, Xanax and Benzodiazapines in general to find out the details of their method of action. Wikipedia has good summaries and has details of their chemistry, method of action and side effects.

Good luck!  (+ info)

Is there a safe and definitive way to give yourself permanent retrograde amnesia?

Does anyone (particularly doctors) know of a safe and surefire way to give yourself permanent retrograde amnesia? I am assuming this would only be possible with pharmaceuticals, as a hit on the head is not at all safe.

LOL

Uh, no. But don't most guys have this condition, naturally, anyway?

is it possible to get a type of amnesia that makes you forget EVERYTHING?

by everything, i mean not just who you are and the people you know or the life you lead, but also what winking or hugging means, why people do things a certain way in society and things like that.

i know that memory of motor-skills, memory of past actions/people, memory of how to read or write or count, or of certain languages are all stored in different parts of the brain. but lets suppose certain areas that store the social norms AND the parts that store personal life experiences are compromised in some way, would that type of amnesia be possible?
----------

Possible, yes. Likely, NO. Usually caused by brain damage or disease in the verified cases that it has happened (or lobectomy). For the people that 'claim' to have total amnesia, everyone is skeptical.  (+ info)
