What type of doctor would be specialized in treating amnesia?

I'd just like to know what type of doctor would be specialized in treating patients with amnesia. I'd also like to know how many years of seconday schooling they'd have to go through in order to get to that level.
Much thanks,
Lex
----------

Lex- Normally, amnesia is evaluated and "treated" by a psychiatrist. After secondary school, there is 4 years of undergraduate college to obtain a baccalaureate (or bachelor's degree). Four more year of medical school follow for the doctorate (MD). Finally there are 3 years of resident training in psychiatry following by national board certification exams to be considered a board-certified specialist. It's a long haul, but a great career.  (+ info)

Will a person with amnesia remember having it once they regain their memory?

I'm currently writing a novel in which the protagonist has amnesia.

Now I realize I don't know quite how amnesia works. LOL! Let's say a person suffers from amnesia for one month. When they do eventually regain their memory, will they remember the month they spent as an amnesiac?

Thanks!

Everything I've ever heard indicates that they retain their memories that start after they have amnesia. Their old memories just come back (gradually or suddenly) and exist alongside their current ones.  (+ info)

What is the difference between Presenile Dementia compared with Amnesia and Delirium?

As far as I can tell, an early sign of all three is short-term memory loss, but when one focuses on the presenile dementia, how does one differentiate between that and the possibility of amnesia or short-term delirium?
----------

Dementia, which is commonly caused by Alzheimers (But also can be caused by other diseases like Parkinsons, and Head traumas, etc) is usually a permanent Condition. There is many different stages. Pre, Mid , and Late stage.
Amnesia, and Delerium are temporary conditions, and can involve memory loss short term, or long term. They are usually caused by a blow to the head, or often drugs, which is the main cause for delerium, like Hallucinogenics( 'Shrooms) , LSD, etc. These conditions are usually reversible, but in science, nothing is ever concrete, black and white. THere is exceptions for everything. Dementia really is something usually considered organic, resulting from a problem inside your brain, not from outside sources.

(Presenile DEmentia is just another word for Early Alzheimers, or Prealzheimers)  (+ info)

Amnesia--What information is forgotten/retained after the person has recovered memory?

In the movies and books, sometimes a person will get amnesia. After they recover their memories of the past, does the person also retain information about their behavior/memories DURING their period of amnesia along with memories before they had amnesia, or not?
----------

One of my friends had a concussion and had amnesia for a week or so.
She remembered bits and pieces of that week, but not everything.
She didn't remember anything withing five hours before and after the accident occured.
However, I don't know if this is a typical case.  (+ info)

Does Amnesia come under the category of diminished capacity?

This is for a legal debate. Some contend that amnesia is not a mental disorder or qualify as diminished capacity. Some say it is.

What say YOU!! Citations added would be lovely thank you.

If a person with amnesia CANNOT be identified by any means, what happens to them?

Let's say an adult with amnesia can't be identified by the police, and no one is stepping forward to identify them even with the help of media attention. What happens to this person? Where might they be sent?
----------

Persons suffering from amnesia that have NO close family or friends to identify them will be sent to a state funded mental facility. There, DNA, dental records, or fingerprints wil be used to identify them. The next of kin will be alerted, and the patient will be moved to a mental facility somewhere else, where they will recieve treatment your their condition.  (+ info)

Does anyone know any good nonfiction books about amnesia cases?

My brother is writing a book in which the main character has amnesia. A bit of research could do it a lot of good, so I need some books that focus on amnesia. Bear in mind I'm not at all interested in _fiction_ books - that's a bit like regurgitation.

Thanks!

Does anesthesia cause amnesia after you leave the hospital?

I'm having surgery tomorrow and I heard that one of the medications they give you during the anesthesia is to give you amnesia. Help! Is this true? I need to be able to take care of the household and family and I am looking for a job. I need my memory. Am I not understanding something?

Please help explain if you know about anesthesia / amnesia. Thank you!
----------

NO they don't give you something on purpose to give you amnesia. its just a side affect of the anesthesia
and it doesn't wipe out your whole memory. if you do experience amnesia its limited to forgetting what happened between the time you went into the operated room to the time that you are fully awake again.
some people forget getting the anesthesia and what it felt like and don't remember nurses waking them up in the recovery room.
personally i don't have amnesia when i have surgery. i remember everything clearly. (which in my case is not a good thing cuz anesthesia makes me feel ill)

and after your surgery you will need to take it easy for a couple days so don't think you are going to go for an interview or take your kids to the park the same day as your surgery.  (+ info)
