Is it possible to give yourself temporary amnesia?

I was just wondering if there was a way to slip into a temporary amnesia. I'm NOT going to do it, of course. I'm very happy with remebering things; amnesia is just something that interests me. Personally, I would really hate to not remember anything.
----------

You can't create amnesia. You can, however, employ what is called selective memory. We all do that. It's driven by selective hearing (among other things). A kid can be oblivious to what's said to him (like 'come in and clean your room) until he hears something that gets his attention (like 'anyone for ice cream?'...

There's a bottom line here....we can remember best what we pay attention to.  (+ info)

Is it possible to achieve permanent amnesia through Hypnosis ?

If you guys got any good guides about Amnesia in hypnosis that would be great , But please be as specific as possible , Thanks =) .
To be more specific , For example , I want to completely forget a 2 year old relationship with my GF completely & permanently , Is that possible ?
And is it possible in the process to collapse all the anchors (emotional,physical..etc) completely , So that they wouldn't have any more effect ?
----------

I don't think there is enough research and study that can truly answer this question. I personally think that if hypnosis is capable of produce post hypnotic amnesia, it should be possible that it can produce permanent amnesia as well if it's done correctly. Anyway, it's just my theory. I personally don't like and don't support hypnosis (many call it the art of suggestion) due to the insufficient amount of research and study regardless of what hypnotherapists try to tell you. I don't think it's scientific. It often creates false memories. Many aspects of it is unknown and not fully understood. Many suggest that opening up your mind to the state of being fully submissive and highly suggestible is spiritually dangerous.

Does amnesia come under the category of mental impairement?

Good morning. Just a quick question to settle a friendly debate. I say that amnesia does fall under the category of a mental impairment. Is that true?
Thank you "guys".

Brianne: That it isn't. Here's the faux situation. One person is entering into an arrangement with someone without knowing that this person hurt her in the past because she has no memory of her past. I say she is mentally impaired and so is being victimized. The other side say she's not because she can think for herself.
----------

Yes. Amnesia is a mental impairment. The argument that the person at the time can think for himself or herself is a mute point. The question is what were they thinking and what distortion came into the picture due to this trauma that led to the individual to make a decision that may adversely affect her.  (+ info)

What cures/treatments exist to help people who have retrograde amnesia?

What can be done to help them remember (if this is even possible), or to help them live their life normally as they had before the amnesia?
Also, I've heard that photos and videos help amnesiacs to remember people they knew before, but what about people they just met (as in days before the onset of amnesia)?

Do they have any chance of remembering that person clearly?
----------

You might call a neurologist in your area or ask your physician for a referral to a cognitive rehab specialist.

The cure usually depends a good deal on the cause of the amnesia and can vary patient to patient.  (+ info)

If you are recovering from amnesia what are the chances that you will forget things forever?

I have a friend who recently hit his head. He said that he has "dissociative amnesia and mild retrograde amnesia" He DOES remember me from 2 or 3 years ago but is starting to remember a little more from a few months ago. He was telling me about a seminar he went to about amnesia where people who had it asked questions and get info. One thing that seemed alarming was that he said that there is chance that my friend may forget a few small things forever. What are the chances of that happening?
----------

Three years ago I was in a accident where I was pulling across an interstate and I pulled into the path f a 4x4 truck that was traveling about 65-75 miles and hour and as a result of that for about 2 months I was in a complete daze and a state of confusion I felt like a walking zombie.
Over the first year I was so lost on everything - I couldn't remember peoples names, I would recognize them and would know I knew them but I drawed a blank.
Even to this day I have lost alot of information that I use to know, like dates and times of jobs I have had and what all I have done in anykindd of order - I can't recall my past and what I have done and where I was. I have not ever been to the doctor for any of what I am going thru and I have no clue if I will regain anything back but I wonted to share with you that I have since the accident been able to retain current information and I am like a sponge when I am learning something I learn it and theexcelll in what ever it is I was taught. So I feel ok with knowing this and pray I don't have another accident that will take all I have learned away again....lol

What's the most extreme case of amnesia ever recorded?

Most people with amnesia remember some things of their life, right? Has anyone ever forgotten everything?
----------

Yeah. However you might not recover from that. Last year a man washed up on the beach with amnesia and the only thing her remembered was how to play piano- he couldn't even speak or use proper utensils. He regained his memory. So many things cause amnesia though- it’s a symptom, not a problem, remember. You can get brain damage and be a vegetable, unable to remember, make new memories, or move.  (+ info)

if you have Amnesia related to Dissociation whats the treatment for it ?

i have borderline personality disorder and post traumatic stress to, im 30 years old now.

theres times when outside i dissocociate though and get all the symptoms of Amnesia which are :

Amnesia – this can manifest itself as having gaps in your memory or the experience of ‘losing time’.

the other symptoms of Dissociation i also get , does anyone else have this and no treatment options that work ?

im waiting for therapy at present and are working closely with my mental health team.

Ironically the condition that you speak of is basically a 'defensive mechanism' one which many of us use[whether we want to admit it or not]! When individuals find themselves in extremely challenging situations, often time the "fight or flight" response does not fulfill the need specifically so what better alternative than let the memory/recall do its part...allowing ones recall/memory to literally 'block out-blank out' an unsettling experience is sometimes the only way for an individual to save their sense of self worth! It's a survival technique! I believe that everyone has utilized such within their lifetime at one point in time or another! It is when the behavior is used to the extreme that one will possibly have some undesirable results....thus some type of intervention may be necessary to simply assist that individual via counsel &/or behavior modification. You may want to go to www.webmd.com to learn more about your situation...it is a very user friendly site with invaluable resources, go see! I commend you for seeking as well as accepting help with this situation! Take care~  (+ info)
