Is it normal for Ambien to cause amnesia?

I have been taking Ambien for quite a while and I've noticed that it gives me amnesia once it hits me. I barely remember talking to people on the phone, and I have no idea what we talked about. It's weird because I vaguely remember talking on the phone, but not to who or what about. Eventually on in the day I remember who I talked to, but I never remember what we talked about.

Is this normal?
----------

Yes, it is very normal for Ambien to cause amnesia. There have been a few legal problems because of this; I remember seeing on FOX News a few years ago how there was this bus driver who ran into three mail boxes at three different points in her daily route, and had absolutely no recollection of it when she was questioned about it. She said it was due to taking Ambien but no one believed her, so people who took Ambien started speaking up for her all over the country. One story I remember in particular was how this one lady who takes it daily began waking up and baking cookies in the middle of the night. When she woke up, she had no recollection of baking them, and this began happening nightly. She laughed it off, though, saying that her office enjoys home-made cookies every morning. So, I wouldn't doubt for a second that Ambien causes amnesia.  (+ info)

What goes into diagnoseing an amnesia patient?

Does it involve a head scan, or a cat scan or anything like that?
----------

I have read your question very carefully and I felt the frustration of not being able to ask you a few probing questions before answering. However, I would at the very least like to email you a few things to consider that will at least offer a few things to consider and may offer additional aspect for your consideration...with your permission first!

Can a doctor check if someone has amnesia?

My friend recently ran into a wall...drunk. He seems to not remember anyone's names, but still has all of his old mannerisms. Some think he is just faking it. So, I would like to know, is there any type of test a doctor can perform to show if he really has amnesia?
----------

i wish. i fainted about 6 months ago and hit my head so hard that i lost all memory of anything from before excluding certain skills such at writing reading and motor skills. one of the most frustrating parts is that there are no tests a doctor can perform (except i guess a lie detector test) so i cant prove that i am really not faking. please believe your friend. if he really is faking then at least you were trusting and dont feel guilty. if he is not faking and you accuse him so, it could drive him into self doubt and even depression. hope this helps.  (+ info)

what is the best way to give yourself amnesia?

should i just hit myself in the head with a bat? in the back of the head or front? i heard the back is where you should be hit. but i want it to look accidental, so lets hypathetically say i loosten the bolts on the tv and it falls on me, where should it hit?

i dont want to forget everything btw, i just want amnesia. i dont know why. i also want to be bipolar a nd crazy and have adhd and ocd and all of those things. i dont know why, though. any ideas?

thank you
----------

I mean, if you're going to do it, a bat is a bit too 'obvious'.. Why not be a bit more creative? Like.. an answering machine.. or box of biscuits, for instance!

Good luck! ;-P  (+ info)

Rohypnol causing amnesia in the victim. Is it possible to gain those memories back?

I'm writing a story and I just want to know if a person who was sexually assaulted and was drugged. Can those memories return?
----------

No, not if the dosage is large enough, According to Wiki:

"victims may not be able to clearly recall the assault, the assailant, or the events surrounding the assault. Very often biological samples are taken from the victim at a time when the effects of the drug have already passed and only residual amounts remain in the body fluids...these residual amounts are difficult and sometimes impossible to detect using standard screening assays available in the United States."

Rohypnol is labeled as a "date rape drug" commonly called a "roofie" on the street. And it is considered to be one of the most effective benzodiazepine hypnotics on a one dose basis.

It causes strong amnesia, but according to El Sohly labs flunitrazepam was used in about 1% of date rapes, so for your book make sure you realize how rare it is. It showed up in only 0.41% of the urine tests.

The Dutch outlawed flunitrazepam based on the System of Objectified Judgement Analysis assessment, and so did the U.K.  (+ info)

What would happen if a person had amnesia and could not be identified?

This is for a story.

If an adult was 'found' with no memory of themselves or who they are and the police were unable to identify them, and no one stepped forward to claim them, would they be 'let go' or would they be commited? This is assuming the they had all thier other faculties and intellegence except for thier indenty.
----------

Actually, they would be able to identify them through DNA testing or fingerprints. Since it's for a story though, just make something up. The authorities wouldn't have any grounds to detain the individual, so they'd be let go on their own.  (+ info)

Does a person who was amnesia how the smell of alcohal?

Lets say someone wakes up from a car crash and remembers nothing. Not her parents, herself, her past. But she can speak normally and function. But would she recognize smells?
----------

amnesia is something hollywood came up with because it makes cool stories and keeps the audience in suspense... genuine cases of amnesia are like leprosy or two-headed calves... sure it happens, but its incredibly rare.... the question to ask yourself is how can someone remember language, or math, grammar, even things like color and the names of complex devices or machinery.... how can they remember how to drive or program the VCR but not remember their own names? Its a psychological condition where the mind is trying to protect itself from something, some fact or memory.... if the smell will trigger the associated memory, then no, the amnesiac will not recognize the smell... if driving a car will associate the person with the trauma... they wont be able to drive.  (+ info)

Is there a severe case of amnesia where you are stricken with illiteracy?

I have to write this short story where someone suffers a violent blow to the head and becomes amnesic. But the victim's case is so severe that they wake up not being able to read or write or even speak. The person actually wakes up a bit primitive and instinctual.

Can anyone provide any information for something like this, if there is such a thing?

Thank you.

Are there any pills that are meant to cause amnesia?

like not pills that are meant to do something else such as sleeping, anti-depressants, etc. Just pills that are supposed to give you amnesia, if so what are brand names of some?

----------

amnesia however, is a side effect of some drugs.  (+ info)
