How does a brain aneurysm rupture?

could it be ruptured by falling down the stairs and hitting your head?

Yes. If a person has a brain aneurysm, then a forceful trauma can trigger a rupture. A significant rise in blood pressure can also be a factor.  (+ info)

As you suggested in your question, the brain is divided into approximate areas designed for special tasks. These may include movement, planning, 3D spatial orientation, language, actual communication, hearing, and more. Which areas are affected depend on the location and amount of the injury. In addition, the affected areas may swell and compress surounding areas. This may lead to additional dysfunction. Fortunately, as the swelling subsides, the symptoms may improve.

For a more detailed explanation, you should ask the neurologist to explain the nature of your friend or loved one's injury.  (+ info)

Is there any way to avoid surgery for a ruptured brain aneurysm?

My dad had bleeding in his brain though doctors said it clotted and stopped bleeding fairly quickly. He regained his conceousness within a few days (he has very little memory problems, now very infrequent) and has no physical deficiencies (thank god). We were told to get another angiogram in 2 weeks as they couldn't clearly see what condition the blood vessel is in due to the clot covering it.
What I am wondering is that since my dad has recovered amazingly in the last two weeks since this happened, (I would say he is 90% already), is there any way he can avoid surgery and let the location of the aneurysm heal itself. Thanks
to avoid any confusion, when I say "it clotted", the location where the blood was coming out has clotted, more like a scab over a cut, and the blood is still flowing through the vein.
----------

Depending on the size of the aneurysm, the doctors say if it's 7mm or larger a stint is required to drain the blockage and surgery is required. Usually anything smaller they'll let nature run it's course. But this may not be so with your father, each person is different. I do pray for you and your family though. I could only imagine what you have gone through.  (+ info)

How long would symptoms be present before a 10cm abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures?

Symptoms would include a protrusion felt in the abdomen, etc.
My grandmother had a 10cm AAA that ruptured, causing her to die. I'm just wondering how long she had symptoms before her death.
----------

It varies. Some patients don't know they have one until right before it begins to leak. The pain, wherever it presents, is pretty bad. Once it starts, the patient doesn't have long to get into surgery.

A few patients may have fairly minor discomfort for a few days before rupture.

Sorry about your grandmother. Her children need to be watched closely for an aneurysm. Starting at age 50, they should get periodic screening ultrasounds.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have an aneurysm rupture and not notice?

And if you did what would happen if it went unnoticed and untreated for a few months? I know you get symptoms but what if you just ignored them and timed passed what would happen to someone?
----------

I believe once it ruptures you lose consciousness and die within moments. Most people die because no one knows what is exactly going on. I doubt you'd be okay if you had a ruptured aneurysm.  (+ info)
