Ascariasis is rare among infants of 1 yr old or younger and if infected outcome is more serious than adults. the peak age incidence is 2 yrs.

U can ask ur doctor for evaluations like stool examination for egg, cyst etc and treatment plan.

Ascariasis is treated by
1.ALBENDAZOLE 400 mg po single dose or

2.MEBENDAZOLE 100 mg po bid for 3 days.

there are also other alternatives drugs for adults like..

3. Pyrantel pamoate, Piperazine citrate to paralyze the worm and remove from GIT.

4.ur child might need vit-A supplement too.

5.Other extreme aspect of ascariasis is intestinal obstruction which presents as acute pain abdomen, and might need surgical interventions ( endoscopy, elective surgical exploration)  (+ info)

What is Ascariasis???????

What body parts it effects? How are the body parts effected? Who discovered Ascariasis? Are there any organizations for it?
----------

Ascariasis is a type of roundworm infection. Round worms are parasites that use your body as a host to stay alive and reproduce, maturing from eggs to adult worms inside your body. Eggs of the ascaris roundworm are microscopic, but adult worms are the largest of the intestinal roundworms, reaching lengths up to sixteen inches.

It is quite common in humans, especially in warm temperatures, effecting about a quarter of the world's population. It's highest rate occurs where hygiene is very poor.

As unfortunate as it may seem, it causes little to no symptoms aside from minor digestive issues. However if your body is infested with hundreds of worms, more serious symptoms can occur.

If any of it's larvae finds its way into your lungs you may experience persistent coughing or a shortness of breath, possible wheezing or difficulty to breathe. The ascaris larvae eventually reach your throat, where you cough them up and then swallow them. They then enter the intestine, where they mature and mate. You'd then experience abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, or diarrhea and possibly bloody stools.

If you are already heavily infected with hundreds of these worms, you'd experience severe abdominal pain, fatigue, vomiting, weight loss, a worm in vomit or stool, or terribly enough a worm emerging from nose or mouth.

So often, the body parts effected are your digestive system, throat, lungs, intestine, abdominal areas, liver, and possibly your kidneys. If you aren't careful, they can sprout into your heart and it would stop beating. You often expel some of these round worms eggs through your feces, or waste after two months, but if those eggs are ingested by someone else, the ascaris life cycle begins again.

If you have gastrointestinal problems that won't go away, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea or nausea, consult your doctor.

If you have a large number of worms, the mass may be visible in an X-ray. An ultrasound may show if any ascaris worms are in your pancreas or liver. A CT or MRI scan may show if any worms are in your liver or bile ducts.

However, if you have only mild ascariasis, you may never need medical attention. While symptomatic infections usually warrant treatment, infections with no symptoms typically don't need to be treated. In some cases, ascariasis will resolve on its own.

The person who discovered ascariasis was Shimesu Koino, a Japanese pediatrician in 1922 although the worms existence leads back to 2277 BC. However it was first studied by Edward Tyson in the late 17th century. It was the life cycle of the worm which Shismesu studied, infecting himself and a volunteer to study the disease's progress.  (+ info)

conditions where stool examination gives negative findings in cases of ascariasis?

Early infection with ascaria lumbricoides will give negative stool examination. When the roundworms grow and reach the small intestine then the stool samples will tend to be positive.  (+ info)

ascariasis question:?

where is it common, and what are the signs and symptoms?
----------

Ascaris, the nematode (roundworm) that causes ascariasis is the most common nematode to infect humans worldwide, most commonly in tropical and subtropical areas. Infections are fairly common in rural areas of the southeastern US.
Most infections are asymptomatic, unless there are a large number of worms in the person's GI system. Nausea, vomiting and obstruction of intestines could be indicative of an ascaris infection. Also, while the larvae migrate through the body during their complicated life cycle, they can cause pulmonary symptoms such as fever, bloody sputum, difficulty breathing and a dry cough (these symptoms are known as Loeffler's syndrome).
Ascariasis is diagnosed by identification of microscopic eggs in the patient's stool, but an adult worm (which can be up to 30 cm long) crawling out of the nose, mouth or southbound end of a person would be a dead giveaway as well.
One of the worms I would never want to get...along with it's cousin baylisascaris.  (+ info)

How does Hepatitis A harm your body???

I have more:
How does Typhoid Fever harm your body and how does Ascariasis/round worm infestationsharm your body???
----------

Are we doing homework here?

►Hepatitis A is an acute liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), lasting from a few weeks to several months. It does not lead to chronic infection.

►Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. Typhoid fever is rare in industrialized countries. However, it remains a serious health threat in the developing world. Typhoid fever spreads through contaminated food and water or through close contact with someone who's infected. Signs and symptoms usually include high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhea.

The most serious complication of typhoid fever — intestinal bleeding or perforation — may develop in the third week of illness. About 5 percent of people with typhoid fever experience this complication.

►Ascariasis (as-kuh-RI-uh-sis) is a type of roundworm infection. Roundworms are parasites that use your body as a host to stay alive and reproduce, maturing from eggs to adult worms inside your body. Eggs of the ascaris roundworm are microscopic, but adult worms are the largest of the intestinal roundworms, reaching lengths up to 16 inches (41 centimeters).

Nutritional deficiencies. Children with ascariasis are especially at risk of nutritional deficiencies. Loss of appetite and insufficient absorption of digested foods can occur as a large number of parasites take nourishment from the host's body.

PLEASE HELP!! 10 POINTS!! Doctors or Top Contributors or anybody with knowledge!!!?

Somebody answered in my other question about Roundworms, that roundworms are a common term for nematodes. There are thousands of types of nematodes, some of which a parasites that infect humans. One of the most common types is Ascariasis. Ascariasis is the most common human parasite in the world. Some estimate that 1/4 of the world's population are infected with Ascariasis. One of the symptoms that people can experience with Ascariasis is wheezing, which is an asthma-like symptom.

I have Asthma and I sometimes whezze, I cough when somebody is smoking, spraying hair spray, strong perfumes, lots of gasoline and when I'm in a dusty enviorment. I even sometimes have a hard time getting air into my lungs. Do I have roundworm? What are the treatments?
----------

We'll have to do a stool sample.

Worms wouldn't give you wheezing at specific stimuli.
You'd wheeze randomly like a dog.  (+ info)
