Why do people treat diseases of the brain (e.g. manic depression and schizophrenia) differently?

If you have a disease of the brain people think that you can change it or that it is sometimes imagined. When people have diseases of other organs, such as the heart, skin, etc. I think that they are treated much differently. Why do you think that is? The brain is an organ too.
----------

I notice people are treated differently with mental illness many people in my family/friends also have it notice it too. I've always believed as it's something not "visible" like someone in a wheelchair for instance or as hear able like other illnesses it's harder for many to accept. And as we all go through these feelings of sadness at least periodically, they feel "why can't they just cheer up" type deal is what they don't understand. But of course that doesn't make it any less real, and hopeful fully with more time & knowledge people can be more understanding.  (+ info)

are their any diseases or physical problems with the brain that could cause this?

a 25 year old male that personality has been changing over the last 6 months...becoming more and more withdrawn, having a hard time connecting ideas and sentences. erratic behavior..hard time controlling impulses..depression, alcohol abuse...detatchment from reality, wandering..lack of hygiene, changes in eating habits..weight loss..loss of self awareness. this person is going to see a specialist..i'm just wondering if there is something that could cause this that is not so much chemical but would show up on an MRI...once it started it's been getting progressively worse and worse. thank you.
----------

All alcohol/drug use, is symptomatic of a deep rooted psychological problem, usually occurring in childhood. If one must drink to be social, well you draw your own conclusions.
What is been described in the question, is typical symptoms of alcoholism. Chemical imbalance in brain is a side effect of methanol in the blood stream.
You say he is seeing a "specialist", if so that person should be aware of the above. If so they will recommend treatment which is appropriate. (This I would think include de-toxic, re-hab and AA)  (+ info)

Can kids under 13 have neurodegenerative diseases or other things beside brain tumors that cause memory loss?

There aren't much symtoms but this person has been complaining about for 3 months. he says that when he thinks of something, it is easy for him forget it a short time afterwards.
----------

Yes. There are various genetic conditions, autoimmune disorders, infections, psychological diorders, and other conditions that could cause neurological symptoms, including memory loss. Some are directly related to the central nervous systom; others cause neurological symptoms indirectly. Memory loss could also occur as a result of insuffient sleep, poor nutrition, or even as a side effect of certain medications. Some potential causes may be lethal, others could be as simple as a course of antibiotics or a vitamin suppliment, and most are somewhere in between. It's also possible that everything is totally normal, and it's just that he thinks he's supposed to remember more than he actually is.

A child experiencing memory loss, or any other neurological symptoms, should definitely see a doctor. It may be no big deal, or even 'just a phase,' but it could be a sign of any number of serious medical conditions, and it's not something that should just be ignored. Websites like Yahoo! Answers are not a substitute for evaluation by a qualified medical professional, and should not be considered an alternative to seeing a doctor.  (+ info)

need help please. Does anyone know any brain diseases that cannot be traced or found with MRI or CT scans?

My fiance's dad is in a long term hospital and he is bedridden and cannot move. They are saying that he is brain dead but he is responsive so that is not the case. The hospital has done nothing but made him worse. We are in the process of moving him to another hospital. He had seizures after he was put in and we think he had a stroke before hand they have tried alot of tests including MRIs, CT scans, spinal taps and a bunch of different types of biospys and they cannot find out what is wrong. somebody please answer. we are desperate for suggestions
it was brought on gradually. First he couldn't walk. Then he got really bad sick. he would not eat and he would have bowel movements. he would just vomit. then they thought it was his gallbladder so they took it out and sent him home but it just got worse after that. he did not know who any of us where and he started coming up with outrageous stories/hallucinations. then he could not talk at all and he can only show his alertness by moving his hands a little and looking at you.
----------

Hmm...there are a lot of things that might be going wrong and are hard to detect. Some types of brain tumors won´t show up in CT scans or MRIs.
I had an aunt who died of brain cancer. She was feeling ill quite some time before, but nobody could find anything wrong. It was until she went to have her thyroid checked, that the doctors realized there was a tumor on her brain stem, right behind her thyroid gland.
I suppose the best thing to do is attacking the incognito from different points.
Do a whole head AND neck MRI.
Find an Infectuous Disease Specialist,
a Neurologist and an Internist and let them work together.
Try to get in contact with the DANA Foundation and see if they can help, too.
Sorry you have to go through this but keep in mind doctors are not infallible, and sometimes they need our help, too.  (+ info)

What is metabolic encelopathy? Can EEG dignose brain death?

Paolin A, Manuali A, Di Paola F, Boccaletto F, Caputo P, Zanata R, Bardin GP, Simini G.
Reliability in diagnosis of brain death.
Intensive Care Med. 1995 Aug;21(8):657-62.
"OBJECTIVE: To compare some of the confirmatory investigations of brain death with clinical criteria in order to achieve the most sensitive and accurate diagnosis of brain death. DESIGN: All patients with isolated brain lesions and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) = 3 were subjected to neurological examination after ruling out hypothermia, metabolic disorders and drug intoxications and diagnosed as clinically brain-dead when the brainstem reflexes were absent and the apnea test positive. PATIENTS: 15 patients with clinical diagnosis of brain death entered this study. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: The patients were submitted to the following investigations: electroencephalogram (EEG), transcranial Doppler (TCD) of the middle cerebral arteries (MCA), cerebral blood flow measurements with the i.v. Xe-133 method (CBF) and selective cerebral angiography (CA). EEG was isoelectric in 8 patients while the remaining 7 patients showed persistence of electrical activity. TCD was compatible with intracranial circulatory arrest in 18 MCA districts, compatible with normal flow in 2 and undetectable in 10 out of 30 districts insonated. In CBF examinations, however, all the patients showed a characteristic "plateau" of the desaturation curves lasting through the whole investigation and suggestive of absent cortical flow. CA showed circulatory arrest in both carotid and vertebral arteries. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that cerebral angiography and CBF studies are the most reliable investigations whereas the role of EEG and TCD remains to be determined because of the presence of false negatives and positives."  (+ info)
