Epilepsy, there are many different types of Epilepsy or seizure disorders. When nerve cells in the brain fire electrical impulses at a rate of up to four times higher than normal, this causes a sort of electrical storm in the brain, known as a seizure. A pattern of repeated seizures is referred to as epilepsy. Known causes include head injuries, brain tumors, lead poisoning, maldevelopment of the brain, genetic and infectious illnesses. But in fully half of cases, no cause can be found. Medication controls seizures for the majority of patients.

Lou Gherig's Disease (ALS) - Lou Gehrig's disease damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, It is a life-threatening disorder that produces weakness of breathing and swallowing.  (+ info)

Is biopsy the ultimately best diagnostic test for brain tumor? How much is it in the Philippines?

We know that the signs and symptoms that we see in the internet are not inclusive and are pretty vague because they might be caused by other diseases...

Biopsy diagnostic test sounds pretty expensive, so I'm seeking help from those who have experience with brain tumors, biopsies, etc... I would really appreciate your time and effort!

Whoa, hold on a minute there!!!
I have had a brain tumor, deadly lethal kind too!
MRI scans are the definitive tool for diagnosing a brain tumor. Sometimes a CAT scan can be helpful, but generally the brain doctor will want several MRI scans with the help of an injection. The injection makes the images more clear and distinct.

A biopsy is is resection sample, in other words they have already drilled a hole in your head to get to the biopsy test. No, no, brain tumors are found and analyzed by neurosurgeons based on contrast given size and location, density. Then a pathologist will take a look. A pathologist is a good type of doctor, they tell doctors and patients what is likely to be effected. For example cancer of the testicles where by removal of the testicles will leave a patient sterile. That is pathology. Surgeons are experts at removal, the are body repairmen.

Incidentally, you are talking about signs and symptoms and you end up with a brain tumor. This very very wrong, for example I had signs and symptoms, but they were not related to my brain tumor. The tumor finding was incidental after I demanded my doctor conduct a full head scan. See, the tumor I had was called a colloid cyst of the third ventricle. Look it up, you will see how scary such a thing really is. So extremely rare, even among brain surgeons.

Anyway the location of my tumor was a tell tale sign that it was not cancer. The doctors pretty much knew in my case based on location. Third ventricle colloid cysts, are benign, in every case ever found. However they once large enough they secretly kill their victims in several minutes.

I hope this helped, I sympathize with you on finding treatments for your ailments. I went for about two years without answers for my health problems. Thank God, my general practitioner allowed me to ask for a head scan, just to be safe.

By the way my tumor was in the middle of my head, before recent technology was invented the surgery was generally as bad as the eventual tumor killing me. The biopsy was just a side thing, something they did after they removed the tumor to varify that material was harmless, i.e. not cancer.  (+ info)

why are there so many metabolic disease and few doctors?

i live in iran and i know a little girl who has metabolic disorder .she is 10 months and suffer from lack of muscle tune .she doesnot gain weight and cannot eat well . the doctors says that she has metabolic disease but they cannot do enything for her there are very good doctors in iran but metabolic doctors are rare .i want to know that is it a new branch of medicine ? or there is some difficulties with distinguishing these diseases?
----------

unfortunately, metabolic diseases are somewhat modern and it is more of a genetic disease and genetic disease is still hard to deal with and takes years to study .Even in western society , metabolic diseases are still hard to deal with, it is caused by inborn errors of metabolism which lead to improper or missing enzymes that are required in breaking down certain substances/chemicals in the body ( fat , protein, glucose , amino acid ). In this case , the girl may have defective enzymes that is required to break down amino acid and glucose as these two are needed for muscle growth and integrity

The girl may to have muscular dystrophy which cause loss of muscle integrity leading to progressive loss of strength and greatly decrased life span This is genetic....I am very sorry as little can be done for the girl as researches on genetically muscular dystrophy are still underway.  (+ info)

diseases of the brain?

I am looking for the most common diseases of the brain. How they develope and if there are any cures and what would be prescribed for them
----------

A big or rather tall order! It is a major specialisation! Brain can have many disorders and some of them can be of the mind (psychological such as depression), and some of the nerves (neurological). Tumors, blood clots etc. can cause headaches, strokes etc.

Senile dementia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimers's diesease and other degenerative disorders of the brain.

Epilepsy, seizures etc.

When the diseases are so many, treatments will be many more. So, limit your question to something more focussed and more manageable.  (+ info)
