what is the difference between plaque removal and calculus removal at the dentist?

i asked for a simple clean i thought this would just be plaque removal?
----------

Plaque removal is something that you can do at home with a toothbrush. Plaque is the soft fuzzy material you can feel on your teeth and can scrape off with your fingernail. If the plaque does not get removed on a regular basis, then plaque hardens or "calcifies" through natural minerals in your saliva and calculus is formed. Calculus can not be removed without special dental tools. So when you go visit a dentist, you get both plaque and calculus removal!  (+ info)

How do you know if the hygienist removed all the calculus buildup from teeth during cleaning?

....Because I still feel a little ridge around a couple teeth while flossing..i.e., not a totally smooth flossing (but maybe it's the structure of the tooth?).
----------

I know you actually meant calculus and yes it is a word in the dental field as well as in math. If you still feel a little ridge when flossing, chances are she didn't do a good job. You can only get this confirmed by another dentist or hygienist and report it to your dental insurance. Or you can go back to the dentist and demand the work being done properly since you probably already paid for it. You can also report them to the BBB or Dental Association.
I don't think it's the structure of the tooth. Teeth don't have any ridges in between unless there is something wrong with them like cavities. But if you're not sure get a 2nd opinion.  (+ info)

Is there something wrong if there is a big hole after dental calculus falls out?

First of all, is it normal that a chunk of calculus falls out on itself?
The calculus was kinda between 2 teeth and now there is a triangular hole between the teeth on the backside and its freaking me out. is that normal?
so are there supposed to be little triangular holes between every teeth, at least the front ones?
----------

That's great! Why would you want calculus buildup sitting around in your mouth contributing further to your gum disease? Sure, chunks of calculus fall out themselves from time to time - not often, but sometimes. Still, you need to have the rest of the calculus on your teeth cleaned off. The triangular hole you see on the backside is the normal space between your teeth that is supposed to be there but had been clogged up with calculus for so many years.
You should see this as a sign that the rest of your teeth need to be cleaned so that your gum disease does not progress further.  (+ info)

what to do if you have calculi in bladder?

It depends on the size of the stones. If they are less than 3 mm then they will probably pass on their own. If they are larger or they are obstructing the flow of urine then you may need what is called Extra-corporeal lithotripsy. This is a relatively simple procedure where Ultrasound is used to degrade the stones to a size in which they can pass through the urethra. You should definitely check with your doctor because if your urinary flow becomes obstructed it is not only extremely painful, but can cause systemic problems as well.  (+ info)

Why do I build up tartar/calculus in my teeth so easily?

I brush twice a day and brush very well, yet i still develop calculus. Whenever i get it removed in the dentist, he says that it's because I'm only chewing on one side and the side that has the calculus is not functioning therefore is more vulnerable to Calculus. Is there any other reason?

I have Salivary Calculi. Doctor said I need surgery while I am asleep. why can't we do this reginal anesthesia?

Maybe the doctor is afraid you'll bite him while he is digging in your salivary glands... or maybe he has to go in through the outside of your mouth. Only your doctor can tell you the real reason for his decision.  (+ info)

Definition of Calculus from about.com:

"Calculus is the study of 'Rates of Change'. Calculus as we know it today was developed in the later half of the seventeenth century by two mathematicians, Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton. There are two main branches of calculus: Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. Differential calculus determines the rate of change of a quantity, integral calculus finds the quantity where the rate of change is known."  (+ info)
