Alcohol slows down your central nervous system. What the heck does that mean?

Does it mean it makes you nervous, or more nervous. Or does that have nothing to do with it. What does it mean to slow down your central nervous system??
----------

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, that is, a drug that slows down the nervous system. As you drink, alcohol enters your bloodstream and affects your brain, where it alters your response time, your motor responses, reflexes, and balance, your muscle control, your judgment and ability to delay or inhibit your words and actions, and your emotions. Although alcohol use in moderation is considered socially acceptable in many parts of our culture today, excessive use and/or abuse of alcohol is associated with significant problems, for the individual and for society.

Here's another way of saying this in a simplified way:

Alcohol affects the nervous system. It slows down the transmission of messages leading to a variety of behavioral changes.
Alcohol slows down the time for the body to react. Thus, drivers who drink are more likely to cause accidents. Legally, there is zero tolerance for teenagers to have any blood alcohol level for driving.  (+ info)

Do plants have a central nervous system that enables them to feel pain?

I am a vegetarian, and my uncle continues to argue that plants feel as much pain as any animal. I did some research on the subject, but I can't find a straight answer. Please help me!
----------

Nope, you are correct, plants cannot feel pain!

Plants have no nervous system whatsoever. Their reactions to the enviroment are strictly cellular and chemical. Even if they had a nervous system, they have no brain to interpret the pain signals. But that's just "What If" thinking. It's like saying "Well if the earth is flat we'd swim over the side". The point is, the earth is round. Plants don't feel pain. End of discussion.

On a side note: if your uncle is so concerned about plants, that's even MORE of a reason to be vegetarian. After all, the animals he eats eat plants too. But they eat a grain-intensive diet that requires not only tons and tons of plants to maintain weight, but also to gain weight VERY rapidly for slaughter. If you total up all the plants a cow eats, and then divide it by how many pounds of meat it actually produces, it requires well over 12 pounds of plants to make a pound of meat. And not to mention all that water - 2,500 gallons of it! Pigs require about 6 pounds of grain per pound of meat, and even chicken requires 2 1/2 pounds or so per pound of meat produced.

That means that meat is calorically inefficient. Western countries in particular have notorious industries that buy grain from foreign countries that export their staple crops at a cheap price while their people starve. We feed those grains NOT TO PEOPLE but the animals, so that we can have the luxury of meat at our plate. If you look at poverty trends worldwide, the poorer a country is, the less likely anyone's eating meat, and it's especially likely that their corrupt leaders export their home-grown crops to countries like Britain and the USA, and the money pools at the top so that the rich can get richer and the poor keep dying.

What are some examples of central nervous system "stimulants" and do they actually cause depression after?

meaning they stimulate nerves and then why do they relax and become depressed again?

can anyone explain this?

Thanks for your answers!
----------

I agree with Thomas' answer, I just wanted to add that part of the reason why people become so depressed after using stimulants is that it affects the serotonin levels... if you are on stimulants, your serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine uptake is reduced, so there are more of these substances 'free' which makes you feel really good... but then the drug wears off, and you are left with very low serotonin (etc) levels, the reuptake increases, and you suddenly go from having loads of extra serotonin etc to having less than usual. It takes a while for the levels to balance out again, and this is the 'comedown'.  (+ info)

Diseases Associated with the Central Nervous System?

Can anyone tell me what type of diseases are associated with the central nervous system. I took my 8 year old to the doctor today and was advised in general that she wants him to come back in a couple weeks to do some tests with the central nervous system because she feels that there may be an issue in this area. This is cause for concern becuase my son is currently taking medication for his ADHD, ODD and Bi-Polar disorder. In addition to, recently he has been having seziures too. These are not just titles associated with this child for that if he wasn't on the medication he would be extreamly unmanageable and a danger to himself and other children.

I vomit a lot from central nervous system nausea. Is there any way lessen the damage to my teeth?

The doctors can't seem to offer me any effective relief. Acupuncture helps, but I still vomit several times at week and at times daily. I am concerned about the damage to my teeth. Is there any way to minimize or prevent damage to my teeth?
----------

The best things you can do is be sure and thoroughly rinse your mouth afterwards to remove stomach acids from your mouth. If you, can brush more often but gently so you aren't wearing the enamel down.  (+ info)

What kind of healt institution can go in Central London to today, to talk about a nervous system problem?

I cannot cope with harsh fluorescent light at work and noise (normal office noise). All sensory stimuli are so painful! Nearly cried from this. Need some help about this please! I cannot cope with this on my own. I am asking for an address recommendation.
I am not feeling good at all was wondering if there is an option to see somebody without having to wait to see a GP.
----------

You need to speak to your GP who can refer you to a Neurologist at your local hospital. You could also see a Neurologist privately. Just look up Neurologists on the web. You would still need a referral from your GP but you would be able to be seen quicker.  (+ info)

A neurologist says that your aunt has a condition affecting her central nervous system. Which one is it?

A neurologist says that your aunt has a condition affecting her central nervous system. Which one of the following is affecting her nervous?
Thalamus and hypothalamus
Corpus callosum and the basal ganglia
Brain and spinal cord
Hindbrain, midbrain and forebrain
----------

That question really doesn't make sense. That's not a list of disorders, those are parts of the CNS. I really don't know what you mean by "affecting her nervous"  (+ info)
