How will i know if my baby has colic?

My son is almost a week and a half old, and he didnt use to be as fussy as he is as of last night. How do i know if its colic or not?
He has a doctors appointment on friday, im just looking for some advice as to if it could possibly be colic or if hes just being a fussy little guy.
----------

I know this sounds trite, but if your baby has colic, you will know.

Most babies get fussy in the evening hours and cry more then usual, and it usual starts a week or two after baby comes home. We used to call it the witching hour with my first child. But a child with colic has the afternoon fussiness to the tenth degree and not just in the late afternoon/early evening. It is inconsolable screaming that goes on forever, and ever (can you tell I've had one with colic!? LOL). The first poster has it right, an official colic diagnosis comes after a baby cries for three hours or more, for three days or more a week, for three weeks or more.

All fingers crossed that your son's rough night was just "the witching hour" and not the start of colic. Congrats on your new son!  (+ info)

What are some home remedies for a baby with colic?

My 5 week old son has seen a doctor and does have colic, but they didn't give him anything to help. I have heard about Mylicon gas drops working, but so far they haven't helped at all. i was wondering if there was anything i could buy or do at home to help him sleep and quit crying? maybe natural herbs or something?
----------

My oldest had this problem and so did my youngest. My oldest was switched to a Soy based formula. My youngest was nursed for a short period of time and when we had to give her a bottle, no dairy products agreed with her, we ended up having her on a Nutramigen which is an expensive formula but it is hypo-allergenic.
I'd recommend checking into the babies formula first, I'd also agree with baby sleep solutions, no harm in that:)
Mylicon worked for my children sometimes, it is rather expensive. Running the vacuum cleaner (until it broke) worked very well too!!
She slept like a baby while the vacuum was on!! Also try laying the baby face down, on his/her belly on your lap and rubbing his/her back and patting their back!!

Hope you find something that works for you, it is so hard to have a baby/infant with Colic, it is very demanding, sleep depriving, hairpulling (your own of course:) period of time, good thing is, they do grow out of it, eventually!!

Do formulas for colic really work?

My 1 month old has begun to display signs of colic - excessive crying, can't be soothed, gas (though she farts and burps, she still brings her legs up and fusses lots). Do formulas like Similac Alimentum or Enfamil Nutramigen really work or help colic? Right now I supplement with Enfamil Lipil but am thinking about changing over. Also, is there a way to snag free samples from these companies for a specific type - usually they only send their regular brands.
----------

My oldest had a terrible case of colic. We tried every type of formula we could find but nothing helped.
Then, our pediatrician recommended Nutramigan and it was a miracle. The constant crying stopped and he began sleeping through the night.
Too bad it took eight months to start using it.
Expensive, but well worth it.  (+ info)

How do I get rid of hair colic?

Not sure if I spelled it right. But is there a way to get rid of hair colic?

One side of my head the hair looks normal...the others always poofed out a little.

You cannot get rid of a cowlick.

Try to find a style where the area is either very short or very long. That's about all you can do.  (+ info)

At what age does colic start, if the baby will get it?

I'm nervous about it since my baby is formula and breastfed. The formula is due to a hospital stay for 4 days of mine when my daughter was 8 days old and I'm working towards breastfeeding more. She is 4 weeks old now, but when does colic usually start? At birth?
----------

My son had colic. I noticed it about the time he was 2 weeks old and it lasted until he was almost 4 months. In general, babies start with colic around three weeks of age, getting its worse at around six weeks of age and then usually stopping around three or four months of age.

The main symptoms of colic are:

Loud and continuous crying that can last from one to three hours at a time, with these crying episodes occurring about three or four days a week

Baby’s face gets red

Legs are pulled up to the stomach and then may be fully stretched

Feet may be cold

Hands may be clenched

Some babies refuse to eat or become fussy soon after eating

Difficulty falling and staying asleep

If your baby does have colic, just remember that it won't last forever. Make sure you give yourself a decent amount of alone time and take one night at a time. Good luck!!!  (+ info)

How do you ease your Colic baby?

Haven't thought of this in years. When Trev, my son, was newborn he had colic. I would set his punkin seat next to the clothes dryer and turn it on. The gentle heat and low hum and tumbling action soothed him and put him right to sleep. If your child is having trouble with gas, it helps first to put him on his back and put your hands under this little feet and gently lift his knees up to his chest, helping him pass any gas that could be making him uncomfortable. These are things that helped me child, without medicine or trips to the doc. I hope they help you!  (+ info)
