What is colic and how do you know if a baby has it instead of something else?

My grandbaby is upset and crying tonight. He and his mother are saying she's colicky. But she's also recently had an ear infection and a mild case of pheumonia. In the last 2-3 days she's been vomiting up phelgm and has had diarhea. Not tempatures yet. I'm not sure of what "Colic" is, but it seems to me that it's more than that. Any thoughts?
----------

Colic is gas in babies who are 3 month and younger. Because when babies are born their digestive system is not yet fully developed they tend to get gas from food and pain in their stomach. A colicky baby cries for hours and seems to pull his legs up to the stomach. A colicky baby also has a hard stomach and burps allot. Colic seems to hit at around 5-7pm and lasts for 2-3hours. Colic does not cause the baby to throw up or have diarrhea. It seems that there is something else wrong with the baby. If the cries are high pitched that means that she is in pain and something needs to be done to ease that pain. Diarrhea could be from the medicine that the baby is taking for ear infection or pneumonia. The parents need to make sure that she does not get dehydrated. Signs of dehydration are lack of saliva in the month, dry lips, sunken eyes, cry without tears, a sunken soft spot, lack of urine for more than 4 hours. If at least one of these signs is present the baby might be getting dehydrated. I would go to the doctor in the morning to ease the pain of the little one and to make sure that she is ok. What you described does not sound like colic. Sometimes grandmothers know best.  (+ info)

How do I know if my baby has colic?

Recently she gets these crying spells and it seems like nothing I do can calm her. If she does have colic what can I do to calm her? Please help?!

Each baby will show different symptoms of having colic. Some may show a number of symptoms while some will only show one. Below are some of the most common symptoms associated with colic.

Loud and continuous crying that can last from one to three hours at a time, with these crying episodes occurring about three or four days a week

Although the crying can happen at any time, most colicky babies cry more in the late afternoon or evening

Baby’s face gets red

Legs are pulled up to the stomach and then may be fully stretched

Feet may be cold

Hands may be clenched

Some babies refuse to eat or become fussy soon after eating

Difficulty falling and staying asleep

Baby may lift their head or legs and pass gas

Baby may seem generally uncomfortable and appear to be in pain

Since it is not exactly known what causes colic, there is no one quick fix that works for every baby. The most important first step is to check with your baby’s pediatrician to make sure there is no medical cause for your baby’s crying. Once your baby is given a clean bill of health then all you can do is try your best to keep your baby calm and comfortable through an episode of crying. Below are a few methods that may help make your baby feel more comfortable. While a few of these methods may work with some babies, they may not work at all for others.

Keep a diary of when your baby cries, along with activities like napping, feeding and playing. Look for patterns, which may offer a small clue to the solutions

If you’re breast-feeding, try to eliminate dairy from your diet along with other foods such as onions, cabbage, cauliflower, spicy foods, caffeine, beans or other gas producing foods. Before eliminating diary from your diet be sure to check with your doctor first. Your doctor may or may not want you to eliminate dairy from your diet or he/she may want you to take calcium supplements

If you’re bottle-feeding, do your best to reduce the amount of air that your baby swallows. Try using a curved bottle or a bottle with collapsible disposable liners

If your baby seems to have a lot of gas, make sure you burp him or her frequently

Don’t overfeed your baby. This may actually make the colic worse. Stick to your normal feeding routine

If you’re bottle-feeding talk with your doctor about changing formulas to a low-allergy type of formula

Take your baby to a part of your home that will provide less stimulation. Bright lights, noise, or a large number of people may further aggravate the colic

Wrap your baby up snugly in a blanket while walking around in a smooth steady motion

Go for a walk in a stroller or for a drive in a car seat

Give your baby a warm bath or place a warm water bottle on your baby’s stomach. Be sure the bottle is not hot!

Try rocking in a rocking chair; or swinging in a baby swing

Give your baby a gentle tummy massage

Some baby’s like hearing rhythmic sounds such as a vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, or cloths dryer and will calm down when they hear these types of sounds  (+ info)

How to comfort a baby that has colic?

I am not positive my baby has colic..but she was a very happy baby the first 2 weeks and when she hit 3 weeks old she seems like she has really bad painful gas and cries a lot..last night she cried for over 3 hours straight. I don't know what to do I plan on taking her to the doctors but I was wondering if anyone knows how to comfort a baby that has colic or bad gas..ohh and I breast feed
----------

It may be colic (basically what doctors call crying for no visible reason), but it may just be phase. Either way it's exhausting and sad! :(
Try babywearing! It is proven to have many emotional and mental benefits, and calms fussy/colicky babies. I used a Bjorn when my daughter was tiny, and I now have a Moby and a Babyhawk. They are both amazing!! Here is a link with great information for you. Good luck, and yay for you for breastfeeding!  (+ info)

What are the chances of having another baby with colic?

I know every child is different, and you never know... but, I was wondering, if you have more than 1 child and the first one had colic, did your next child have it too?
Please, I'm not looking for ways to cope with it, etc. My daughter's colic went away a week ago, and it's been the greatest week ever! Just looking for some stats, out of curiosity...
----------

i hope not!! my son (one and only) had it BAD, and i am so nervous to ever have another because it was very hard on me. but i always think if you have a fussy one first that if you get a non colic the second time you will appreciate it so much more. and if the second has colic too, then at leats we will have been through it already, know how to deal, and know that it does get better.  (+ info)

Can anyone who has/had a baby with colic give me their daily routine?

My baby has colic and I just want any other parents to give me a rough idea of their daily routine. It would help me so much. Thanks in advance.
I have lots of things to help calm her although I know they may not necessarily work. I just want to know what sort of time(s) your baby cried and for how long.
----------

I know just how your feeling!

My daughter had it from birth to about 4 months! So don't believe all that bollocks bout it appearing or dissapearing at any time - each baby is different - I was just unlucky I guess on that front!

Crying times ... in the day usually soon after a feed. And each night from 5pm onwards to cryed like hell til 11pm ish.

She is 9 months now and fine. It did just suddely slow down and disapear tho one day...

You will see if thru don't worry - couple of months down the line you'll forget bout it!

Enjoy you baby while she's little - it goes too fast! I miss the newborn stage sooo much!

Oh and I'll mention all the shop 'colic' brands are absolute shite!!!

When you know the colic is coming on (or just before it starts)- try do something at that time to distract her...these things worked for us

-a bath (together)
-putting baby in vibrating bouncer chair

Good luck xx
