¿does steaming vegetables kill any bacteria including cysticercosis ?

Cysticercosis is an infection that creates cysts in different areas in the body. The infection is caused by a parasite called Taenia solium (the pork tapeworm).
Cysticercosis is caused by swallowing eggs from T. solium, which are found in contaminated food.
Risk factors include eating pork, fruits, and vegetables contaminated with T. solium as a result of unhealthy cooking preparation. The disease can also be spread by contact with infected people or fecal matter. The disease is rare in the US, but common in many developing countries.
Avoid unclean foods, avoid uncooked foods while traveling, and always wash fruits and vegetables well. And yes, steaming can kill bacteria...though haven't seen studies to show if the temperatures get high enough to kill cysticercosis on veggies. Only studies I've seen are about pork. Thorough washing to remove bacteria combined with high temperature cooking would be your best bets when in doubt.  (+ info)

How long does it take for a tapeworm to get from your stomach to your brain after eating?

I believe I ingested a pork tape worm that causes Cysticercosis and have symptoms of pressure in my eye and the movement of small worms in my brain 31 hours later--i actually felt them. Is it possible for this to all happen so quickly?

you should probably go to a doctor instead of picking the best answer on yahoo answers.

cysticercosis easy to get? testing for this?

I travel internationally A LOT, and read something that freaked me out about neurocysticercosis. I usually eat where the locals do in the foreign countries, because they usually know the best food. I know the health regulations aren't as strict as they are in the U.S.
I'm paranoid I might have picked something like that and not even know about it. I don't have any kind of worms in my stool or anything like that, but this seems like a silent killer. I read they use M.R.I. to detect cyst, but I don't want to get that unless it's necessary due to cost. I read it is a major cause for epilepsy in Latin America. I get a physical with a complete blood count every year, that should show if I had any parasite right? I know I'm probably worrying for no reason, but I probably have been exposed to a lot of stuff in my global travels over the years, and really never paid it any mind til someone showed me an article.
Please no copying and pasting from CDC. I would prefer to hear a Dr.s opinion, someone in the medical field, or someone who actually has or had cysticercosis.

The tapeworm Taenia solium is acquired through eating undercooked pork, however human cystercercosis is a fecal-oral infection acquired by ingesting eggs excreted in the feces of a human tapeworn carrier. You could also get it if you have the adult tapeworm through fecal-oral auto-infection. The disease remains common in Central and South America. You are correct, it is a major cause of epilepsy in endemic areas. After ingestion of the egg theperiod of time till the larva settles and becomes a cysticerci in ~ 2 months. However symptoms may not appear for 10 or more years after infection. Though the cysticerci can appear most anywhere, most pathology is related to the central nervous system.
The physical and CBC is probably of little use. An annual physical does not usually include a stool parasite exam. If you indeed have an adult worm(s), you may see a slight increase in eosinophils in the blood smear, but not much else. A physician will probably not order a CT or MRI without you showing specific symptoms and most general or family practice docs probably know little of the disease. An ID doc would be your best bet.
I too have done a lot of world traveling and think you may be overreacting. Just use common sense and hygiene- don't eat undercooked pork and always wash your hands and keep them outta your mouth.  (+ info)

Worrying about Death Disease: Cysticercosis?

I'm probably overeacting, but this sh** scared me so much after I read this http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/cysticercosis and seeing the MRI/CT scan of the brain in wikipedia, I started to pray that I don't have this...I know I haven't ate uncooked pork nor contact from fecal oral matters? (i mean i dont know, I ate pork some other times) I mean does it say that it has to contain alot of physical feces in food or water? or it could mean very tiny matters of fecal in the water/ food? or that all these years I didn't know that I might be infected, then auto infected myself? (I pray that I don't have this or did this)

I'm so worry now...I don't have any symptoms that was listed by CDC, not vomitting, I would go to a doctor for just checking, but I don't have health insurance nor alot of money even though it is the sake of my own safety, what should I do? am I overreacting? should I go to a health clinic (i dont think they have MRI/CT scan equipment, idk) or a hospital? if so how much do you guess would it be...be reasonable realistically...thank you

I'm sorry if I grossed you out, but these things must be known b/c knowing medical symptoms is necessary even nasty ones for protecting yourselfs

and if you say that ALL tapeworm can't get to the brain, your heavily mistaken as CDC got prove

again if I am being weird or im overeacting then please say so as I type this in my worrying stance

If you live in a developed country where meat inspection is rigorous and sewage disposal is excellent then your chance of catching tapeworm is very low or nil. Even for those in countries with less than ideal conditions as regards to meat inspection and sewage disposal, if their meat (beef, lamb and pork) is well cooked (not uncooked) they'll be fine. Actually, cysticercosis is uncommon in the brain, the majority of the larval cysts tend to form and stay in the muscles.  (+ info)

Names of some infectious skeletal or muscular disease?

I need to write about an infectious disease of the skeletal or muscular systems. Tetanus, botulism, influenza, cysticercosis, septic arthritis are all taken. Please give me names of skeletal or muscular infectious disease that is not mentioned above. thanksss

Hows about Ebola. Its a very nasty disease that is also very infectious. It results in boils and swellings, then you start to turn to mush inside out. It attacks the Nervous System but also muscles, so you could try that.

My Mom found out she has an old CYSTICERCOSIS.... Can someone help me understand what that means ?

Hello everyone...just wanted to ask if anyone knows anything about OLD CYSTICERSOSIS ? My Mom went in on Saturday and had a CATSCAN done and they told her that she has that and now they are referring her to a neurologist. But what I want to know is what does it mean when they told her that she has an old non active parasite. What does that mean ? I don't get it. Does that mean that it can wake up at anytime and hurt her and cause her to get a stroke or something...Does anyone know from personal experience ? I am kind of freaking out over here because everything I am reading is saying that either she will have to take medicine for a while and if that doesn't work she is going to have surgery, but I am hoping that is only if it wakes up...right ??? Please someone explain... Thanks for your help for whoever responds it will really help keep me a little sane here :o( Plus it will help my mom understand too. I helping her do some research on it.

Cysticercosis is an infection caused by the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. Infection occurs when the tapeworm larvae enter the body and form cysticerci(cysts).

How can you get cysticercosis?
By accidentally swallowing pork tapeworm eggs. Tapeworm eggs are passed in the bowel movement of a person who is infected. These tapeworm eggs are spread through food, water, or surfaces contaminated with feces. This can happen by drinking contaminated water or food, or by putting contaminated fingers to your mouth. A person who has a tapeworm infection can reinfect themselves (autoinfection). Once inside the stomach, the tapeworm egg hatches, penetrates the intestine, travels through the bloodstream and may develop into cysticerci in the muscles, brain, or eyes.

Is there treatment for cysticercosis?
Yes. Infections are generally treated with anti-parasitic drugs in combination with anti-imflammatory drugs. Surgery is sometimes necessary to treat cases in the eyes, cases that are not responsive to drug treatment, or to reduce brain edema (swelling). Not all cases of cysticercosis are treated.

Often, the decision of whether or not to treat neurocysticercosis is based upon the number of lesions found in the brain and the symptoms your Mom has. When only one lesion is found, often treatment is not given. If your Mom has more than one lesion, specific anti-parasitic treatment is generally recommended.

If the brain lesion is considered calcified (this means that a hard shell has formed around the tapeworm larvae), the cysticerci is considered dead and specific anti-parasitic treatment is not beneficial.
As the cysticerci die, the lesion will shrink. The swelling will go down, and often symptoms (such as seizures) will go away.

Cysticercosis is not spread from person to person. However, a person infected with the intestinal tapeworm stage of the infection will shed tapeworm eggs in their bowel movements. Tapeworm eggs that are accidentally swallowed by another person can cause infection.

I hope it helps.Take care as always!  (+ info)

Swine Flu and Brain Worms?

Cysticercosis is a big problem in some parts of Latin America and Mexico where health codes are hard to enforce and people may frequently eat undercooked pork. Check it out, http://abcnews.go.com/Health/PainManagement/Story?id=6309464&page=2
