ive heard schizophrenia can be caused by a virus or viral infection like cytomegalovirus?

or herpes simplex 1 and borna virus.if this is true.then couldnt the virus be contagious and therefore schizophrenia can be contagious.
----------

Schizophrenia is genetic, it runs in families. if you do not have schizophrenia in your family you can forget about getting it. They say viruses can trigger it but only if you already have the genes for it. if a parent has schizophrenia there is only about a 20% chance that a child will not only get the genes but have them triggered as well. Schizophrenia is not contagious.  (+ info)

Is there a cure for retinitis pigmentosa anywhere in the world.?

What's the best carear options for me, someone with RP at an early age.
----------

I was diagnosed with RP a year ago (I'm 15) and haven't really been freaking out about it, but I know that there are no for-sure treatments yet.

Some things being researched that are looking pretty possible:

Retinal Transplants,
Vitamin Supplements to regrow healthy tissue,
Healthy tissue replacement (basically like growing tissue in a peitr dish and then inserting it into your eye),
and robotic eye (i think that one's on youtube).

My personal favorite is pray about it and just hope it doesn't degenerate too quickly.

My eye doctor, Dr. Grassi, who is supposedly the leader in the field of degenerative genetic eye disorders, says that they will undoubtedly have a cure within my lifetime, probably in the next 15-20 years.  (+ info)

how easy is it to catch cytomegalovirus (CMV) during pregnancy from an infected baby?

i have just found out my friends baby has cytomegalovirus (CMV) i had been looking after him for a few hrs a weeks, im 8 weeks pregnant whats the chances i could have caught it from him
----------

Im not sure what the transmission rate is, but the majority of people carry CMV without knowing. Its only a problem if your immune system is supressed such as with transplant patients, or AIDS.  (+ info)

Does anyone on YA suffer from retinitis pigmentosa?

Thanks for answering guys - forgot to add this blurb ... if you know ... when was it diagnosed and how long did it take to get to a bad state. My wife was diagnosed eighteen months ago, and is down to about 90 degree vision. Don't know how quickly it will get to a bad place for her and its not something we really talk about.
----------

I do not myself but my cousin does and he is now considered legally blind. His scope of vision has been narrowing progressively for about 15 years and is now reduced to a pinpoint of light. Very sad, horrible disease. It was diagnosed early and as I said was progressed rather slowly as well. I have not seen the latest research tho.  (+ info)

I'm looking for any info on retinitis stigmatosis, can anyone please share what they know?

I've already searched on google and other search engines, also webmd, but no info found.
----------

In a pioneering study at the University of Washington, FFB-funded researchers discovered a way to prod retinal cells to regenerate after injury. If perfected, the approach could be used to restore retinal tissue, and vision, for people with a variety of retinal degenerative diseases including retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration.  (+ info)

We went to seek specialist 5 years ago & the specialist took x-ray of her eyes & confirm it is RP. He told us, nothing can be done, if it get blind... that it is REALLY BAD LUCK. Cytomegalovirus and glioblastoma link? Is there more research being done?

Thanks, April, but i am referring to this, "More than 80 percent of patients newly diagnosed with the brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) exhibit detectable CMV in their blood as well as in their tumors..."
----------

Glioblastoma, there's ongoing research and many clinical trials for this almost ALWAYS fatal brain cancer. Cytomegalovirus, on the other hand, is a very common infection of the eye, also is a member of the herpes family.
Hmmm, a virus that's carried by about 80% of people worldwide. Now, if you're on chemo for gbm, you are more suseptible to the virus. It does NOT cause gbm.

From the same site you found that quote on: the fact that a vaccine based on CMV seems to have some effect on GBM, means the relationship has to be more than fortuitous:

There were 21 patients enrolled in the trial, and the vaccine appears to have delayed the re-growth of tumors from a typical six to seven months after surgery to more than 12 months. Early results also show a lengthened overall survival among GBM patients, from about 14 months with standard treatment to greater than 20 months.
