How often should a diabetic exercise? What kinds of exercise would be appropriate?

I'm not sure how much exercise would also be considered too much. I've heard and read some recommend an exercise of 3 times a week. Would exercising daily be too much? I think other people leading active lifestyles have no problem with daily physical activity. Is it possible for a diabetic to still build up their muscles? Or would their condition make it a little more difficult for them?
----------

If you're out of shape or have recently been diagnosed as having diabetes, see your doctor before you begin an exercise program. Your doctor can tell you about the kinds of exercise that are good for you depending on how well your diabetes is controlled and any complications or other conditions you may have. Here are some tips for starting:

* If you're planning to walk or jog, be sure your shoes fit well and are designed for the activity you have in mind. Be alert for blisters. Wear new shoes for a bit each day until they're comfortable and not as likely to cause blisters. Remember, always wear socks.

* Start slowly with a low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming, or biking.

* Build up the time you spend exercising gradually. If you have to, start with five minutes and add a bit of time each day.

* Always wear an ID tag indicating that you have diabetes to insure proper treatment in case there's a problem when you're exercising or you have an injury.

* Avoid lifting very heavy weights as a precaution against sudden high blood pressure.

* If you have foot problems, consider swimming or biking, which is easier on the feet than jogging.

* Stretch for five minutes before and after your workout regardless of how intense you plan to exercise.

How often should you exercise?

Try to exercise at the same time every day for the same duration. This will help control your blood sugar. Exercise at least three times a week for about 30 to 45 minutes.

What about food and insulin?

If you plan to exercise more than an hour after eating, it's a good idea to have a snack. Generally, it's good to have a high-carbohydrate snack such as six ounces of fruit juice or half of a plain bbagel.
If you're doing heavy exercise such as aerobics, running or handball, you may need to eat a bit more such as a half of a meat sandwich and a cup of milk.

If you haven't eaten for over an hour or if your blood sugar is less than 100 to 120, eat or drink something like an apple or a glass of milk before you exercise. Carry a snack with you in case of low blood sugar.

If you use insulin, exercise after eating, not before. Test your blood sugar before, during and after exercising. Don't exercise when your blood sugar is more than 240.

If you're not an insulin user, test your blood sugar before and after exercising if you take pills for diabetes.

When is exercise a problem?

If your blood sugar level is over 300 mg/dl, if you are sick, short of breath, have ketones in your urine or are experiencing any tingling, pain or numbness in your legs, don't exercise. Also if your medication is peaking, it's better not to exercise.

What is a good diabetic alternative to sugar?

I'm planning on baking some muffins for my nan and she's a diabetic.
Sugar is integral to the muffins actually working, so does anyone know any good alternatives?
----------

For the sake of all diabetics that you might cook for I just really have to say that TheEnd, is completely wrong. Where did you get that idea?
sugar is sugar, and raw or processed it will increase her blood sugar.
Its the carbohydrate level in food that affects the blood glucose level.

is she type 1 or type 2 diabetic
if type 1 tell her the amount of sugar per muffin and she can eat it
if type 2 it will be fine if she only has 1.  (+ info)

How long can a diabetic person with type one live without insulin?

My grandmother is 90 years old and has congestive heart failure. She also is a diabetic that takes three insulin shots per day. In the last week she had two heart attacks, and the doctors have said there is little more that they can do for her. Monday, Hospice is going to step in and they will take her off all her medications and just give her morphine for pain until she passes away. I am just wondering what will happen to her once they stop giving her the insulin.
----------

well that depends on the person and her blood sugars, she could probably go quite awhile by eating well. In all likeliness it probably wont be the lack of insulin that kills her. Good luck, and best wishes to your grandmother  (+ info)

What is the best way to help diabetic neuropathy, other than watching your blood sugar levels?

I have been a diabetic for 32 years, and I just have been told I have diabetic neuropathy in my legs. Does anyone know any good exercises, lotions etc that will help, besides some meds from the doctor?
----------

Diabetic neuropathy is not curable. Of course the primary med prescribed is neurontin. However, it is often thought that over the counter vitamin b-12 and vitamin e benefit the nerves. Wear good socks and shoes...check your feet often and keep them lotioned with any unscented lotion (just make sure alcohol is not in the first few ingredients listed as alcohol is a drying agent). It's also a great idea to see a podiatrist for any nail cutting. One small wound, cut or nik can cost you your foot as neuropathy consists of numbness and tingling of the foot and you could have a sore there but not feel it. As far as exercises that help...haven't heard much out there that benefits neuropathy..but exercise in general is a good idea to promote blood circulation as circulation is decreased in diabetics. Hope this has helped you somewhat. Best wishes.  (+ info)

Wives of diabetic men: How do you deal with the sexual sides effects of diabetic men?

37 male diabetic who is struggling with complications.

I power lift 5 days a week and stay under 20 carbs daily, but feel terrible and havent had a erection in 2 weeks.

Serious replies only!
----------

I got most of mine back... mainly with a healthy, natural foods based diet and lots of aerobic exercise.

Are you talking 20 servings of carbs? 20 carbs is hardly enough to exist on. Your body needs the nutrients in those carbs. Your intake should be at least 30 to 40 per day.

There are lots of things one can do besides straight intercourse. Talking with her, expressing your feelings, and exchanging ideas is the best way to deal with that situation. There are also lots of supplements a guy can take besides the harsh drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis. Here's a list that might help...

Enzyte ingredients:
horny goat weed extract (Epimedium sagittatum)(10% flavonoids as icariin) (whole plant)
L-arginine HCl
Ginkgo biloba leaf 6:1 extract
saw palmetto berry
Tribulus terrestris extract (10% saponins) (stem and fruit)
Panax ginseng root extract (4% ginsenosides)
vegetable cellulose
Swedish flower pollen extract
Avena sativa (aerial parts)
zinc gluconate
maca root
niacin
zinc citrate
zinc oxide
copper oxide
muira puama stem 4:1 extract
copper gluconate
octacosanol  (+ info)

What if your not diabetic what happens if none diabetic gets insulin injection?

what happens if none diabetic gets insulin injection? and its to much just and takes it really low would this happen the same as in a diabetic?
----------

Insulin's job is to decrease blood sugar levels by absorbing and storing the sugar as various forms of energy (ie. fat). Diabetics who take insulin have some form of insulin deficiency in their body. A non-diabetic who takes insulin would result in having too much insulin, so their blood sugar will drop. Blood sugar levels must be maintained at a fairly constant level for appropriate body function, and if it drops too low, it can induce seizures or coma.  (+ info)

What is a nice gift to send a diabetic who had a heart attack and is being released from hospital today?

One of our employees, who is diabetic, had a heart attack and is being released today. My supervisor wants to send a fruit basket. I don't know if that is ok for a diabetic. What gift can we send if the fruit basket is not feasible?
----------

Good thinking. Most fruits are very high in sugar. I would suggest maybe a basket with nuts, sugar free candies, and maybe a little fruit. Also, a package from hickory farms with meat and cheese would be good.

Then there is the old stand by of a plant or flowers.  (+ info)
