How do I sweeten the cookie dough for diabetic cookies?

My husband is a diabetic and I would like to bake some cookies for him. Can I use fructose for diabetic cookies?
----------

You both should talk with his endocrinologist- this is NOT a job for a GP.
Research is changing the way we treat diabetes so fast a GP cannot be expected to keep up with that.
The endo can help you see a dietitian or diabetes educator who will teach you about counting carbs.
This is the gold standard in treatment right now.
Start subscribing to diabetes magazines and keep up with the world of diabetes.
We count carbos not sugar.
Make your regular cookies and enjoy.  (+ info)

What is the maximum grams of sugar a diabetic person could handle?

Approximately how many grams of sugar should a diabetic consume in a day? or per serving? Please help because a diabetic is staying at my house and I am having a difficult time preparing food that she can eat!
Thank you so much for the responses...the first four. They really help me in understanding what I can cook for her. Thanks for the carbs info b/c I did not know carbs were bad for diabetics. Again thaaaaaaaanks!
----------

well....there isnt really a specific "gram" that they can handle at maximum. it really depends on how bad theyre diabetes is. my dad is diabetic. so, i cant really tell you how many 'grams" specifically that they can take, but i can tell you some food you can make for a diabetic. ok, first of all, diabetics cant take much carbohydrates, because carbs turn into sugar. so if you are using bread, use whole wheat bread, or bread with lotthe most fiber you can find. if your using pasta, they have low carb pasta, or even high fiber pasta, which is good too. the reason i recommend fiber, is because if it contains a good amount of fiber, it cuts down the carbohydrate when eaten (kinda confusing) o.o but thats how it works. if you are baking something, such as cake or what not, use splenda. you can use it in cooking, and baking. you canot cook with sweet and low. hmmm...if you are cooking something and are planning to use sugar, maybe you can seperate a certain amount of what your cooking before you add the sugar. so you can put sugar in yours, in splenda in theirs. vegetables are fine, and great for diabetics. fruits are ok too, but in moderation because fruit has sugar too. probably the best thing for diabetics is protein and fiber. both are great because they keep your stomach filled for a long time without really raising or lowering your blood sugar. if you need more help you can message me. ^^ im hypoglycemic, the opposite of diabetic, and i need to eat the same things as a diabetic too. i hope this helped you somewhat.  (+ info)

What is a good appetite suppressant for a diabetic?

My partner is type 1 diabetic and uses smoking to suppress his appetite to counteract diabetic cravings. Is there a safer alternative you can recommend? Many thanks.
----------

Besides healthy, nutritious foods, maybe some L-Glutamine

Keep in mind, that the body needs nourishment. Lack thereof is what causes hunger. Many, if not most, manufactured foods are lacking in essential nutrients and therefore, don't satisfy the hunger urge. Most natural foods are loaded with essential nutrients and, if left raw, furnish the body with what it craves satisfying the hunger urge. You eat less, and get more energy.  (+ info)

No problems. Check the carb content and do a post prandial blood sugar level so that you know how it affects you. Then discuss it with your diabetes educator. You must look after your kidneys too so lots of water if you're increasing your protein intake.  (+ info)

How dangerous is it for a diabetic to drink?

I know that alcohol affects a diabetics body differently, but what would happen if a diabetic drank? Not got drunk, but just had a beer or two?
----------

As long as they keep it to a minimum and make sure to monitor their blood glucose and take their insulin like they should, it's ok. However, do not drink heavily! Not only is there a lot of sugar in some alcoholic drinks, especially beers and mixed drinks, but when your body breaks down alcohol, it breaks some of down into simple sugars, which will raise your blood glucose even more. At the hospital where I work one of our frequent fliers is a 23 year old diabetic who comes in with DKA all the time, because she likes to party, and drinks so much so fast that her blood glucose sky rockets. Don't be like her! You will do permanent damage to your body and rack up unbelievable medical bills.  (+ info)

What is the basic principal of eating as a diabetic?

I have recently been diagnosed as a "borderline diabetic".

I am almost 41 years old. I have illiminated sugar and white flour to the best of my ability from my diet and eat three meals a day with a snack in the evening. So far, I have lost 15 pounds in 30 days; my current weight is 235.0 lbs and I am 5'10".

My question is, what is the basic principal of eating as a diabetic? Is there an amount of protein/carbs/fat that one should eat to maintain a constant glucose level in the blood? Or a specific timing?

Thank you so much for your help.
----------

Limit your carb intake. The body turns all carbs into sugar. With simple carbs; sugar, honey, syrup, etc. the body converts these quickly causing your blood sugar to spike so avoid these. Complex carbs like rice, oatmeal, beans, etc. take longer to convert so your blood sugar doesn't spike, but it will still go up. You also have to be careful not to eat too much protein. Protein won't effect your blood sugar, but will effect your kidneys which are already working overtime trying to get rid of the excess sugar. Make an appointment and talk with a dietitian. In the meantime practice portion control. That's where most of us get in trouble. 1/2 Cup is a serving of starch like corn, beans, pasta, potatoes. 1 Cup is a serving of raw veggies and 1/2 Cup cooked veggies = a serving. 1 oz. of meat = 1 serving of meat. Watch your diet and talk with a dietitian and you should be able to control your diabetes without having to go on meds. OH and always carry some hard candy with you in case your blood sugar gets too low. Good luck with this.  (+ info)
