How do you tell the difference between diabetic toenail and toenail fungus?

I have a friend who is diabetic. He has one of the worst looking toes I have ever seen. It is yellow, REALLY thick, and flaking off. I mentioned it to a nurse, and she said it was that way just because he has diabetes! Will diabetes do that to your nails, without an underlying infection?
----------

No. If it is thick, flaking and discolored it is likely a fungal infection. Sometimes old trauma can also cause the nail to be thick and dyscolored but not usually flaky. Persons with diabetes are more prone to catching the fungus so the nurse you spoke with was just giving you the "dumbed-down" version.  (+ info)

How can my mother avoid becoming a diabetic?

What exercise can a 75yr old do to lose weight? She has bad knees and bad feet and is very over weight and is afraid of water. She is trying to avoid becoming a diabetic, so where can I get a meal planner or a list of dos and don'ts?
----------

Here is a link to a great website for Diabetes. I don't know if there are any exercises listed there, but there is a lot of info as to who to talk to, nutrition, and links to more resources...

Cheers and best of health  (+ info)

How long does a 91 year old diabetic wear a boot after a double fracture?

My ninety one diabetic mother broke her ankle in 2 spots, one on each side of the ankle. After losing the cast and wearing a boot for 6 weeks, the Dr says to wear the boot for 8 more weeks. Is this normal practice? She has difficulty walking in this boot, but,he says her ankle is healed.
----------

The doctor is worried that her bones are still brittle and need more time to completely heal.
Perhaps you can ask the doctor if an air cast or something lighter and smaller could provide the same support?  (+ info)

How old is the oldest type 1 diabetic to live?

How old is the oldest type 1 diabetic to live?I'm a type 1 and im just wondering.
----------

Insulin wasn't discovered until 1921 and not readily available till several years later.
We do not yet have 100 years of research on the subject.

The people who say they know people close to 100 who are great probably didn't get type 1 till later in life. You can get it at any time.

The options are open and endless.
Let's bash some records !  (+ info)

How can i cope up with my diabetic boyfriend?

I love him dearly and im hurting to see him going through such a terrible disease. But i know i have to be strong for him but i want to do more to help him go through it. He's diabetic 2 and taking shots 2x a day. Im even planning to take some nursing course just to understand his disease even better.
Thanks for all great answers...sometimes he could be so stubborn and a pain in the ass, but would never ever leave him only because he's sick with diabetes.
yes, i'd been doing a lot of readings and research about diabetes on the internets, books, articles, doctors...but i guess, i only need some moral support from people who also undergoing this situation and you guys didnt diasppoint me. I think more than the physical aspect of diabetes I am more concern on the emotional effect such as depression...and by the way he's also diagnosed with high readings of triglycerides. Love u all!
----------

Going to nursing school is a nice idea, but it will be awhile before you get the training you need there to help him.

I would suggest that you do some more research on the Internet, and talk to a Diabetes specialist to get as much information as possible. There are things that you can do to be prepared to help him should the need arise, for your sake and his. For instance, should he have a sudden episode of low blood sugar--hypoglycemia, and need glucose tablets, OJ, etc. Or, a high blood sugar--hyperglycemia, and need water, insulin, or more urgently emergency response (911). Is it harder for juvenile diabetic teen to lose weight rather than a normal kid?

I am juvenile diabetic and would like to lose about 20 lbs. All of my friends have been losing weight with no problem but I haven't dropped any weight :( Anyone have advise? Does anyone have experience as a juvenile diabetic and losing the weight they want?
----------

It's tough for Type 1's to lose even a few pounds, I'm in the same boat. Most nutritionists will say it's because we have to treat our lows when we exercise, adding more calories, but that doesn't add up for me. Some think there might be a component of artifical insulin, or the fact that we inject insulin in big spurts rather than a trickle, that might be to blame. Regardless, what's worked best for me is keeping my carbs at less than 30g per meal, less than 100-120g per day. The weight will come off slowly, but it will come off. Your BG's will be easier to control too. And of course get some moderate exercise a few times a week.  (+ info)

What type of gift to give to a diabetic who just came home from the hospital?

A friend of the family just came home from the hospital after suffering from pancreatitis. We are going to see him this evening, and I wanted to bring him a get well gift. I was going to bring him food, but he found out he was diabetic while in the hospital, so I'd rather not go that route. Any ideas? (He is in his 50's)

Something under $15 or $20 would be great.

a diabetic cook book? i got one when i was diagnosed and i love it :]
i'd steer clear of diabetic chocolates and the like as they produce nasty laxative effects
maybe a hamper of fruit also!  (+ info)

An alleged diabetic is allowed to eat snickers and other foods in my high school class?

I thought that being a diabetic (whether type I or II) meant being hyperglycemic because of a lack or misuse of insulin. If he is already hyperglycemic wouldn't eating a candy bar make things worse. Unless, there is such thing as being hypoglycemic with diabetes.
----------

Being diabetic means that your body either does not produce insulin anymore (Type 1) or does not produce enough insulin (Type 2) to cover the amount of glucose produced. If the student is diabetic, his blood sugar may fluctuate between being high and low depending on stress, lack of food, exercise (and a bunch of other things). If a diabetic is having a "low" or hypoglycemic episode, where their blood sugar falls under 80, they need fast acting sugar to bring their blood sugar up quickly. If untreated, they could have seizures, go into a coma, or die. Diabetics also need to eat at regular intervals in order to keep their blood glucose levels in an optimal range. The student HAS to have special arrangements made, such as eating or drinking water in order to be able to function. I am sure that he is NOT an "alleged diabetic". The best thing that you could do, instead of being jealous or annoyed, would be to research this disease and the symptoms of hyper and hypoglycemic episodes, and possibly HELP this student. He doesn't eat candy and stuff for the heck of it...he NEEDS to do it sometimes to save his life. Having understanding friends makes all the difference in the life of someone living with this disease, which unfortunately has NO cure yet. Good luck to you and I hope you will be able to be a support to your fellow classmate.  (+ info)

Do you know of any good sites for diabetic menus/recipes?

My father has just been diagnosed as a borderline diabetic. He is about 30 pounds overweight and has been told losing weight would reverse the diabetes. However, he and my mom are having trouble creating a menu plan using guidelines aimed for diabetics. I would like to give them some sites to help out. Something free would be ideal as they are both retired.
----------

http://www.diabetic-recipes.com/ is one good site and here is another: http://www.bhg.com/bhg/category.jsp?categoryid=/templatedata/bhg/category/data/DiabeticRecipes.xml

Another good way to lose weight for your father's problem is to go on e-diet and sign up for the diabetes diet. My boyfriend signed up and lost 50 pounds.

Needless to say his blood sugar is back in the normal range and the recipes are good.

They give you recipes for the whole week, three meals a day.  (+ info)

What blood pressure pill can a insulin dependent diabetic take ?

I have tried Cozaar, Lisinopril & Diovan & had bad side effects from them & my blood pressure actually went higher. Please help, has this happened to anyone else ?
I am taking Tenormin (Atenenol) now but my blood pressure is still high.
What are some of the blood pressure pills other diabetic take with little side effects ?
----------

I take Enalapril Maleate . Ten MG. a day. Bp went from 150/90 tyo 118/68.....But there is a catch to this. I started to exercise 1 hour and 30 min. a day . Nordic Walking. And this is what I think really lowered my BP. Cause before I was taking 5 mg. and nothing was getting better. I have no side effects.
I pay 3 1/2 cents a 5 mg. pill. I live in Thailand.
Try the exercise bit. I do it everyday : Rain or Shine.
How are high blood pressure and exercise connected? Regular physical activity makes your heart stronger. A stronger heart can pump more blood with less effort. If your heart can work less to pump, the force on your arteries decreases, lowering your blood pressure.

Becoming more active can lower your systolic blood pressure — the top number in a blood pressure reading — by an average of 5 to 10 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). That's as good as some blood pressure medications. For some people, getting some exercise is enough to reduce the need for blood pressure medication.

If your blood pressure is at a desirable level — less than 120/80 mm Hg — exercise can keep it from rising as you age. Regular exercise also helps you maintain a healthy weight, another important way to control blood pressure.

But to keep your blood pressure low, you need to keep exercising. It takes about one to three months for regular exercise to have an impact on your blood pressure. The benefits last only as long as you continue to exercise.
