Herbal supplements, Diabetic Retinopathy?

Allow me to preface my question with the fact that I take ALL prescription meds, eat sensibly, and don't do anything to endanger my eyesight.

Taking into account the above informatio, are there any
suppliments
antioxidents
foods
natural remedies that I should be trying?

I have had several laser surgeries and a vitrectomy in one eye.

My vision is a lot better than it was 2 years ago, but somewhat blurry.

Please advise.

Return your retinas to better health. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, your eyes could be at greater risk. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful:

what is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is to do with changes to the retina ... the light sensitive bit, at the back of your eye.

The following website says:

"It is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.

In some people with diabetic retinopathy, blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In other people, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A healthy retina is necessary for good vision."  (+ info)

Is Diabetic Retinopathy reversable?

No, the damage from proliferative retinopathy (meaning it is actively affecting the eyes) can't be reversed.

But it CAN go into "inactive" status once it has been treated, especially if the diabetic keeps his/her blood sugars as close to normal range as possible.

For example, retinopathy occurs, as you already know, when abnormal blood vessels grow from the retina into the vitreous gel in the eye.
After laser surgery treatment (I have had this done & assure you, it is not painful, they numb the eye and the laser light is aimed at the periphery of the retina- on the outside edges only). This "seals" any leaking blood vessels. And, once an area is treated, it is less likely that blood vessels will grow from that area again (but not impossible).

If you don't get the laser surgery done and many blood vessels burst, releasing blood into the vitreous gel/fluid in the eyeball, a person could lose their sight. That's why treatment is so important.  (+ info)

How far use of alkaline water help a person suffering from calcification of arteries, diabetic retinopathy?

I am 55 and a patient of diabetes and hypertension for over 25 years. On insulin for nearly 20 years. Two years back, I was in hospital twice with pyelonephritis, UTI and pus in prostrate. Impared vision due to retinopathy, shooting pains here and there due to neuropathy, cramps specially in calf muscles are the other more serious problems. How far alkaline water can help me? Is there any chance of aggrevation in my condition if I use it?
----------

Alkaline water is not likely to hurt you or help you. Good luck.  (+ info)

i have diabetic retinopathy...what can i do to help myself? thank you....?

First of all keep your blood sugar under control. This will slow the progress of the disease.

Second, make sure you have your eyes examined regularly. (The eye doctor will tell you how often).

Controlling your blood pressure will probably help as well.  (+ info)

did any of you ever have the corticosteriod injection in the eye for diabetic retinopathy?

dear all, my mother has diabetes for 15 years now. recently we got to know about her diabetes retinopathy and its fast deteriorating. the doctors have offered laser treatment and the corticosteroid injection. as much as i have read online it seems that the corticosteroid treatment hardly has any information or studies done. i was wondering :
if any of you have undergone the steroid treatment,
how long ago did u have it,
how frequently did u have to repeat it,
and did u develop any cataract and/or glaucoma cos of it?

any of you had the laser treatment done, then please tell me about your experience from that. how r u doing now? what r the side effects or long term effects? if someone gets worse since the laser treatment what options r there then? the more details you have the better for me. please please let me know as much as you can. we r so worried for her. we need to come to a solution ASAP. thank you all for your answers and time.

god bless you all with good health.

can Diabetic retinopathy be treated ?

Yes, you can have laser surgery but that does not take away the damage already done just helps to slow things down. Unfortunately the damage from D. retinopathy can be quite rapid and very scary. If it is recommended by the doctor it is best not to put it off because the damage can be so incredibly rapid and irreversible. You can have D. retinopathy from having both high and low swings in your blood sugar so the steadier you can keep your sugar levels the better. Best of luck.  (+ info)

Has anyone else had similar treatments for Diabetic Retinopathy/Diabetic Macular Edema...what was the outcome?

I am currently undergoing treatment for both PDR and DME. I am receiving Avastin injections, Steroid injections and Focal laser. They are planning to do a vitrectomy this fall. I have already had 2 vitrectomies in my other eye. Has anyone experienced these kind of treatments and what were the results. My doc says that my R eye is very fragile right now. Basically I could blink and that could be it. Has anyone lost vision or is now in a low vision capacity with advice. How can I start to prepare for life as someone with low vision or has gone blind? Also in regards to the vitrectomy, has anyone had it done under local anaesthesia?
----------

I have not had laser done for more than 20 years, so I'm sure it's changed, but I did have a good outcome.

I am mainly writing to say that I think you should check the message boards at the American Diabetes Association website, because there will be a lot more diabetics there who've gone through this. It's www.diabetes.org

I am curious about the vitrectomies because I might have to have that one day. Why did you have to have them done? You can email me through my avatar if you like.  (+ info)
