What can cause Dysgeusia (Parageusia) in the mouth and with smells?

My girlfriend is experiencing what seems to be Dysgeusia (Parageusia). She is smelling and tasting a constant burning plastic or rubber. What could be the cause of that? She brushes her teeth and doesn't take any pills except for her pms pills and she hasn't started yet. What could cause this? Extensive insight would be mucho appreciated.
Could this be caused by...pregnancy?

this condition is when a person has a metallic taste in their mouth. It can be caused by infections of the mouth or teeth, or a skin condition that affects the mucous membranes(skin) in the mouth such as lichen planus, or other problems such as Crohns Disease.
The metallic taste can also be caused by medications, especially if they are chewed, if they are at the back of your tongue. Medications such as flaxyl, tetracyclines, biaxin ethombutol & others can cause a metal type taste because they get into the mouth via salivary secretions or directly from the blood. If you think the medications are the cause of the taste changes, you should seek assistance from the medical professional who ordered the medication, explaining the situation. this could be done via a phone call & should not involve an extra appointment in being needed, however a different medication may be prescribed so attendance may be necessary for script collection. If the medications are non prescription, I strongly advise you stop them & seek the advise of a health professional.  (+ info)

Has anyone used Chantix (varenicline tartrate) to quit smoking?

Did it work?
Did you experience any of the side effects "In clinical trials, the most common adverse effects of Chantix were nausea, headache, vomiting, flatulence (gas), insomnia, abnormal dreams, and dysgeusia (change in taste perception), according to the FDA."
How long did side effects last?
Would you recommend the use of Chantix to other smokers?
----------

Yes, it worked. Yes, there are side effects, nausea and vivid dreams being the most common ones. I did have a couple more, but I quit, and it's been 7 weeks that I am smokefree and 5 weeks since I stopped taking Chantix.

I blogged about my whole experience here: http://onchantix.com/blog/stan

There are also links to many other people who blogged about their experience quitting smoking using Chantix: http://onchantix.com/weblinks

I hope this helps!  (+ info)
