please help my dr. says i have bovine spongiform encephalopathy?

but cant explain it until my appt in 3 weeks. does anyone know?
----------

If you really have that (= Mad cow disease) I can't believe your dr. sent you home for 3 weeks without at least some support. Are you sure you got this right?

Humans can get this from eating infected beef, but it's not easy to diagnose. You need at least some hospital tests.   (+ info)

fast fact and stats on mad cow disease other wise known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy?

i need facts on what it has done and how to prevent it!!!
anything you know!!!!!!
----------

Here is the U.S. it is illegal to feed ruminant products to other ruminants. That is what causes it, in a nutshell. (Sometimes cows are fed blood meal because it's a good rumen by-pass protein, also some feeds contain animal source protein. It must come from pig, etc, not other cows).
That is why we no longer have cases of BSE in our native cows. It is very easy to prevent. It cannot be treated. It cannot be tested for in live animals because they need the brain for the test. It is not contagious or infectious.  (+ info)

How is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease related to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)?

AHHH, MAD COW! I believe it is essentially the same thing but cruetzfeldt-jokob is the designation when developed in humans  (+ info)

Can Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy be "cooked" away?

You know how raw meat, if you dont cook it completely it can get you sick? well can Mad Cow (BSE) be cooked out of meat?
----------

Nope. BSE is a prion and isn't destroyed by typical cooking temperatures. That's one of the things that make it so difficult to deal with. A well-done burger that has BSE will still make you sick. It's really nasty stuff.  (+ info)

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is it infectious?

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a highly infectious disease but only transmittable from mouth to mouth contact, except among the bovine population where it is transmitted through even hoof-to-hoof contact. So unless you're kissing cows, and they are at times affectionate and loving creatures, you ought to be good to go. Got milk?  (+ info)

What is the treatment for mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalaphothy)?

Doing a report for anatomy, and my resources are limited. Any help?
----------

There is no effective treatment. Since it can remain dormant for many years, it can also be difficult to diagnose. A friend of mine's sister died of mad cow(can't remember the term for the human form of it) In florida, she lived. But the doctors or the family weren't allowed to publicise it because the US government didn't want everyone to know that mad cow was in the US. Needless to say, I'm now a vegetarian. If you need more info, wikipedia.com could probably answer any more questions you have.  (+ info)

how do you find out if you were ever infected with transmissible spongiform encephalopathies?

What tests can you ahve done to test to see if you have ever had transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or if you do now, or how to recognizre it in someone?
----------

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a fatal brain disorder. Its early symptoms resemble those of Alzheimer's and other types of dementia, but Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease progresses much more rapidly. Of the CJD cases not classified as sporadic, one type — variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) — is particularly notorious. This type was identified as a new CJD variant in the mid-1990's, after four young people in the United Kingdom developed unexplained dementia in a short span of time. Scientists concluded that the outbreak was caused by eating beef from cattle with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), sometimes called mad cow disease.
reutzfeldt-Jakob disease is marked by rapid mental deterioration. The disease typically starts by causing mental and emotional problems, then progresses to affect motor skills, such as walking and talking. Sometimes, however, motor problems are present from the start.

Initially, CJD may resemble depression, with such symptoms as:
* Personality changes * Difficulty concentrating * Social withdrawal
* Loss of interest in usual activities * Memory lapses
Early physical effects may be slower to appear, but they sometimes precede or accompany personality and mood changes. The first physical signs may include:
* Clumsiness * Poor coordination * Muscle spasms * Difficulty speaking
* Difficulty walking
Over a matter of months, CJD progresses rapidly, with results that may include:
* Profound loss of memory * Incontinence * Hallucinations * Inability to speak
* Blurred vision or blindness * Inability to swallow * Coma
* Fatal complications, such as heart failure, respiratory failure or infection
The disease usually runs its course in about seven months, although a few people may live up to one or two years after diagnosis.

Only a brain biopsy or an examination of brain tissue after death (autopsy) can confirm the presence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. But doctors often can make an accurate diagnosis based on your medical and personal history, a neurological exam, and certain diagnostic tests. The exam is likely to reveal such characteristic symptoms as muscle twitching and spasms, abnormal reflexes, and coordination problems. People with CJD also may have areas of blindness and changes in visual-spatial perception.
In addition doctors commonly use these tests to help detect CJD:
* Electroencephalogram (EEG). Using electrodes placed on your scalp, this test measures your brain's electrical activity. People with CJD and vCJD show a characteristically abnormal pattern.
* Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This technique uses radio waves and a magnetic field to create cross-sectional images of your head and body. It's especially useful in diagnosing brain disorders because of its high-resolution images of the brain's white matter and gray matter.
* Spinal fluid tests. Cerebral spinal fluid surrounds and cushions your brain and spinal cord. In a test called a lumbar puncture — popularly known as a spinal tap — doctors use a needle to withdraw a small amount of this fluid for testing. The presence of a particular protein in spinal fluid is often an indication of CJD or vCJD.
* Tonsil biopsy. Scientists have learned that tissue from the tonsils tends to harbor evidence of vCJD. Examination of a sample of tonsil tissue may help diagnose vCJD, but this method seems less reliable for other forms of CJD.  (+ info)
