Post traumatic epilepsy/seizure - anyone help? Stopping breathing, fainting, shaking after RTA?

My husband had an RTA several years ago. He has been on anti-epilepsy drugs for pain ever since. On and off since Jan 06 he has been having 'episodes'. At the beginning they would happen once a day, at anytime and doing anything. He would faint, stop breathing and one side of him would shake. He would be very tired afterwards. Since then they have occurred every month or two and happen several times a day when they start. He doesnt always shake with them but is sometimes difficult to wake and is very sleepy afterwards. He is awaiting an appointment for an EEG but as they do come with a warning or something particular starts them off I dont feel as though it is going to reveal anything.

Someone has suggested post traumatic epilepsy or post traumatic seizure. He was unconscious breifly following the accident and had a cut to his head. Does anyone know anymore on this subject or could you suggest any other reasons?
I DID KEEP A DIARY AND SPENT AGES ON IT GOING INTO DETAIL. tHE CONSULTANT FLICKED THROUGH IT AND DIDNT REALLY SEEM TO EVEN READ IT

If he had a head injury following his car crash (even a minor head injury), it can precipitate an epileptic condition. I'd suggest keeping a camcorder on hand so that you can quickly record what these seizures look like as this can be vital for doctors in diagnosing what is wrong with him. You should also consider keeping a diary so you keep track of when the seizures occur, what happened, what he was doing when he started to seize, etc to see if there is a pattern and/or trigger.  (+ info)

Is having post-traumatic epilepsy the same as having epilepsy?

I'm not sure what you mean by post-traumatic. Was there a serious head injury or was it some sort of psychological trauma?

In the first case, if there was a severe injury to his head, it would be a traditional case of epilepsy. This, the most common type of epilepsy is caused by legions/scar tissue/irregular damaged tissue in the brain. Seizures occur when electronic messages in the brain are sent through this tissue and become scattered (called by neurologists "electrical misfirings"). Most cases are usually controlled with medications called anti-convulsants such as Depakote, Dilantin, Tegretol, Lamactil, Keppra, and others. I've been on just about every one out there (been epileptic all 24 years of my life, have had countless MRIs, CT Scans, EEGs, PET tests, etc.) and I've also had two brain surgeries to treat it.

If by post-traumatic you mean some kind of psychological trauma he went through (coming back from war, seeing intense violence, or any really psychologically severe event), it may be what is called pseudo-seizures. These are essentially psychological blackouts that don't always look like most seizures (convulsions, blank staring, etc). I had one or two after my first surgery at age 12 because the brain surgery was a very physically and emotionally painful experience for an 11-year old boy. Much less seems to be known about these types of seizures, but a psychiatrist or nueropsychologist might be able to tell you more.

If the epilepsy your referring to was caused by head injury from a car wreck or something like that, than it is like traditional epilepsy. Go to epilepsyfoundation.org for more info.  (+ info)

what is post-traumatic epilepsy and how can you have it without having epilepsy?

Uh... well technically when you have post-traumatic epilepsy you have epilepsy. But if you mean how can you suddenly have epilepsy one day, it's an effect of some sort of brain injury, whether through stress or a vitamin deficiency or a car crash, etc. Basically your brain is suddenly unable to fire its neurons with any sort of accuracy (at certain times). The prognosis is good if you haven't had them before, but be careful, they could strike at any point.  (+ info)

I have been told that I have a 3 to 4% chance of developing post traumatic epilepsy. How high is this risk?

I was in a car crash three & a half years ago, along with other injuries I sustained haemorrhagic contusions of the right frontal and parietal lobes. I have been told by a neurological expert that the risk of developing epilepsy remains in the region of 3 to 4% 3 years following the accident and is likely to reduce down to 2% in the next 5 or 6 years. My question is, in real terms how high are those percentages? I was a passenger in this car crash completely faultless, therefore I will be receiving compensation, do I receive the whole amount that is being offered or as my solicitor suggested there is an option to accept a lower amount with an option of leaving the case open in the event that I do develop epilepsy and perhaps unable to work depending on the severity of epilepsy I develop I can therefore claim for loss of earnings at a later stage? I would like some suggestions and opinions from anyone who knows how high those percentages really are in terms of actually developing epilepsy?
----------

Look at it from a positive stand-point: you have a 96-97% chance of NOT developing epilepsy.

Remember that the person who gave you this info has to - ahem - cover his backside. If he told you that you would NOT develop epilepsy and you did, he would be wide open for a lawsuit.

All the best.  (+ info)

i have post traumatic epilepsy i had neurosurgery but i am getting seizures & stroke why?

EEG RECORD:-
An awake EEG record was done using the international 10-20 system with referential and bipolar montages.
The resting record is characterized by a background activity of 9-10 HZ alpha activity intermixed with 5-6 HZ theta activity, which is bilaterally, symmetrical and synchronous with posterio-anterior attenuation, reactive to eye opening and eye closure.hyperventilation does not induce any change. photic stimulation induces good shift of background activity bilaterally. there are frequent spike and slow wave discharges seen over left temporal region with phase reversals at T3 with secondary generalization.
IMPRESSION:- this EEG is suggestive of left temporal epileptogenic foci with secondary generalization.
At present i am taking medicines ----------------------
topiral:-
175mg-------200mg
tegerital:-
200mg--200mg--400mg
lametec:-
200mg-----------200mg
zonisep 50mg morning.
please suggest me your valuable suggestion
thanking u,
yours faithfully,

How does post traumatic stress disorder effect war veterans?

i have to write a paper on post traumatic stress disorder, and how it impacts iraq and vietnam veterans. so i really nee some help looking for articles, and some ideas, okay so please help me out guys
----------

well first off, everyone can get post traumatic stress from anything, its all mental, and i have it to be honest. Its not something you can control and its not something that is left unnoticed. You often catch yourself going through random flashbacks of a stressful situation. like I've noticed that when Im playing a video game, doesnt matter which game, but i was playing it and all of a sudden i was thinking about the stressful time that caused the post traumatic stress. and its like you re-live it temporarily, but some time had gone by because i had died on my game and my little sister had come in and asked me what i was doing. it causes bad dreams and makes you want to not sleep. depending on how bad it is. it just overall isnt something that is tolerable for very long  (+ info)

What's the difference between bipolar and post traumatic stress disorder?

If you read my questions I post, you can tell that it's post traumatic stress disorder. Don't tell me you diagosis, but what the difference is, please.
I go through mad abuse.
----------

Bipolar disorder is a bio-chemically caused mental disorder that often results in episodes of mania and dpression in varied degrees of length and intensity...altho it hasn't been proven it tends to run in families therefore there may be a genetic connection...

Post-traumatic stress disorder is the result of an event or situation that the sufferer has experienced, lived thru...etc.
It is not genetic in nature....it is in response to an emotionally traumatic experience.....

racing thoughts.....insomnia....reduced inhibitions....rapid speech...thoughts that everthing is interconnected such as seeing obscure 'patterns' when patterns to things and situations are not there...promiscuity.....outrageous spending sprees.....these are some of the symptoms of mania....it can progress into halucinations and paranoia if not treated......  (+ info)

There are several good sites to look up Mental health issues. One being NAMI.org and then looking up diagnosis. Or Mental Health America.net
And as far as counseling you need to look for someone with experience with PTSD. and yes many people live good productive lives. Feel Free to email me if you'd like to chat. God Bless Reggie  (+ info)
