What physiological changes that occur during pregnancy often cause gastrointestinal problems?

What physiological changes that occur during pregnancy often cause gastrointestinal problems?
----------

With the hormones in flux, the normal regulatory funtions are knocked out of skew. Morning sickness is a big example of this, as well as food cravings. Some women even eat dirt, which is a very bad sign of problems.  (+ info)

What causes gastrointestinal tract upset?

How long does it take for your gastrointestinal tract to come back to normal after months of hard drinking alcohol? What can you take to help gastrointestinal tract to return to normal?
----------

Depends on your system, since everyone's metabolism and ability to flush out toxins is different. You could try taking probiotic supplements or natural ferments (yogurt, kefir, saurkraut, cider vinegar in honey and water) daily for a few months to replenish the depleted microflora in your gut. Also, try eating foods that are unprocessed and easy to digest. This should help you to feel better more quickly.

You'd likely benefit from a cleanse, either candida, liver, or colon. But I would start with a gentle one if I were you, since a really strong cleanse could be hard on an already imbalanced system.  (+ info)

Gastrointestinal side effects starting a year after being on cipralex?

I have been on cipralex ( 10 mg) for over a year without much in the way of side effects. But for the past 3 months I've been having an array of quite severe gastrointestinal problems.
Is this common with cipralex?
Thanks for the input. I have actually been to my GP AND a gastroenterologist, neither of whom mentioned any connection between my symptoms & cipralex. But since a bunch of tests & ultrasounds aren't showing anything else, I'm suspicious.

It was actually a naturopath who suggested a possible connection. I hate to stop the cipralex because it really has helped re-stabilize my life. I wonder about reducing even further to 5 mg?

I understand that cipralex has the least in the way of side effects, so it doesn;t seem that switching to another SRRI would help a a lot.
----------

Cipralex contains the active ingredient escitalopram, which is well known for causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. I was on citalopram for over 8 months and suddenly started to experience severe nausea. This went on for 3 months. Eventually they took me off it and within 72 hours the nausea had stopped. I know also that certain painkillers can interact with these drugs, and cause mild bleeds within the stomach. If your stools are really dark, and you are taking painkillers, I would go and see your Doctor. Also, there is a misconception that side effects only occur at the start of treatment. This is not always the case and can happen at any time. Check out mednet on google for more information, and get an appointment with your Doctor anyway. Good luck.  (+ info)

What exactly is gastrointestinal bacteria and what does it do?

I am studying for my quiz and came upon this, i remeber hearing something about it but not specifically what. I think i remeber this being the good bacteria in your stomach... that's all. can anyone help me?
----------

GI bacteria comprise what is called the normal flora of the intestines. These bacteria promote health in a number of ways. The stomach is typically bacteria free because of the harsh environment, but some people also are colonized there as well by a couple of bacterial species that can survive the acid environment.  (+ info)

What are the gastrointestinal symptoms of Scleraderma?

The results of my colonscopy reveal a "spent" intestine. It is flacid, narrowed. Several doctors tell me it is because of too much laxative usage. I don't take laxatives and never have. Could the cause be scleraderma? Does anyone have a personal experience with the disease? Anyone else have an idea?

How long does it take Naproxen gastrointestinal effects to subside?

I took Naproxen 3 days ago at midnight. I woke up with horrible wrenching stomach pains. I do not take naproxen regularly. I did take it with a bowl of cereal. However, it is now 3 days later, and I'm still feeling horrible pains of gas and acid indigestion, which by the way is way worse starting at 4am in the morning. I went to urgent care and they said it was the Naproxen. How long does it take to get over this?
----------

You need to get something to help coat your tummy like Mylanta or Peptobismal until it subsides. It could of been an allergic reaction too. Just give it a little time. Some people it only take s afew days to get over and others it can take up to a week. Try the Peptobismal when you feel the upset coming on and it should help. You have to be really careful with Naproxen. Taking it with milk or some bread helps to buffer it in the tummy.  (+ info)

Are any gastrointestinal bacterial infections bright green in and of themselves?

Or are the bright green stools caused by organisms such as giardia and salmonella purely a result of bile?
I understand that green stool often just results from bile, but I want to know if there are any gastrointestinal parasites that are themselves bright green. Thank you for your time.
----------

Green stool often indicates that food has passed through the intestines faster than normal (called decreased bowel transit time), before it could be changed from green to yellow, or brown.

You certainly did not provide much information so I am basically providing you with a generic answer.

If you were have the diarrhea, then the Bile color was still present on your fecal representation.

In addition, # Bacterial overgrowth, Infectious diarrhea - especially salmonella and giardia can result in this green color.

If you have these parasites, I recommend GSE = Grape Seed Extract for 10 days 2 - 3x/ day in orange juice. It is a SUPERIOR product to rid ones system of unwanted parasites... oh it is EXCELLENT!

Get well soon.  (+ info)

Is there any gastrointestinal viruses that dogs can spread to humans?

Our dog got sick with vomiting and diarrhea last week. Within 24 hours a member of our family got it. Within 4 more days the rest of our family all had vomiting and diarrhea. Is there any viruses that dogs can spread to humans?
----------

It's pretty unlikely your dog got you sick.

You can't catch a cold from a dog, and you're way more likely to get sick from not washing your hands after riding the bus than you are from anything your dog might have picked up. Common canine colds and infections simply don't affect humans, and dogs are actually way more cleaner than they look.

You should look into things around your home that might be getting everyone sick, especially food. If someone fed the dog the same food everyone else ate, that could be the culprit.

Check this article out for some good info on whether pets can get you sick or not:
