What happens to blood when pH changes in the gastrointestinal tract?

I'm stumped with this one
I've searched my text and I'm not finding anything that looks relevant. I thought that maybe my professor was looking for us to find that there is a direct relationship between pH changes in the GI tract and the blood. Aside from that I don't know where she was headed with this question.

not enough Info, which way does the pH change? is it acidic or is it alkaline to begin with? Are you asking what the cause of such an event would be? There are numerous causes. ranging from Esophageal varices to ulcers to cancer.  (+ info)

what does the gastrointestinal specialist do?

i had pain right below my ribs a few weeks ago and my doctor wants me to go see a gastrointestinal specialist to make sure that nothing is wrong with me. what do they do at the appointment?
----------

1st appointment they will do a comprehensive history and physical possibly to include x-rays and/or labs. Treatment will be based on the findings and the physical exam. He or she will treat your symptoms to begin with the most least invasive way they can, which is generally medication. Should you need it, they will progress to endoscopy which passing a lighted camera in a long tube into either your large colon or through your mouth, into your esophagus, and into your duodenum. They can do both at the same time. Probably on your 1st visit it will only be a comprehensive history and physical though.  (+ info)

What is the safest thing to take for "gastrointestinal issues" when pregnant?

I wish that I could whisper. But it is obvious I cannot. What meds are considered safe for gas and other issues that I will leave unsaid. If you are pregnant, you know what I am talking about.
----------

OTC Simethicone is considered safe in pregnancy. Try laying on your right side. You can also try 7-up or another non-caffeinated soda which will help you burp (sorry!)....I'm sorry to say there isn't anything that's going to stop it from going "somewhere" though, as embarrassing as it may be. It's more uncomfortable for you to deal with it than it is to take or do something to pass it.  (+ info)

What happens during a gastrointestinal appointment?

Because I have to go and Im unhappy and I want to know what they do normally.
----------

At an appointment with the gastroenterologist you will check in at the front desk where you will be handed some paperwork to fill out (unless you already had that mailed to you before the appointment to fill out at home). They will ask for your driver's license and insurance card so that they can make copies of it for your chart.

After that is done you will sit down to wait. After the assistant calls you back she will ask a little bit about why you are there and also take your blood pressure and possibly your weight.

Then after that you may be asked to take your pants off and put on a drape on the lower half so that the doctor can do a rectal exam after asking you about the reason you are there. The exam will only take a few minutes if they do one.

After the exam and him asking additional questions they may order other tests to try and figure out what was going on.

Then after that you will then schedule a follow-up appointment if necessary.  (+ info)

Is it common to get Gastrointestinal Pains from quitting smoking?

I was a 1/2 pack a day smoker for 20 years and quit 1 week ago.
----------

Yes very common, I had a painful bloated stomach and constipation for a few weeks. There are plenty of things you can get from the chemist that help and it goes away after a while, don't let it stop you stopping!  (+ info)

Is gastrointestinal discomfort a side effect off taking echinacea?

Just wondering if anyone else had stomach issues/diarrhea when using an echinacea supplement.
----------

Yes, too much echinacea can give gastro-intestinal discomfort. Supplements and drops contain much higher concentrations than you would get than if you used the herb in its natural form. Even worse, the benefits do not increase dramatically with these super-concentrated delivery methods. To get the most benefit from echinacea without the side effects, purchase the herb in its natural form, and make a tea with it...3 cups day will give you wonderful benefits.  (+ info)

Does this fall in the range of what is considered normal gastrointestinal activity?

I feel like I get a lot of variety with my stools and my question is: is this normal or do I need to see a doctor right away? I get a lot of variety in the amount, size, color, and frequency. Sometimes I go maybe 3 times a day and it will be different each time. The first one will be brown and solid, but then maybe I have to go half an hour later and it will be runny. Sometimes it will be green all week and then it will be tan and brown the next.
----------

I would call the doctor.. you might need a colonostomey,,,  (+ info)

Is taking garlic useful in preventing gastrointestinal disorders and lowering cholesterol levels?

What are the other uses of taking garlic?
There is one saying in Telugu language that even mother also could not do good to us as garlic does to us.
----------

Look at the following link and the extract of the info given below:

Garlic Medicinal Properties

The bulbs yield an essential oil containing allyl propyl disulphide, diallyl disulphide and two other sulphur compounds. The garlic bulbs have stimulant, anti cholesterol, antibacterial, aphrodisiac, analgesic, anthelmintic, diuretic, emmenagogue and anti fungal properties. The sulphur compounds give garlic the characteristic pungent odour and the nickname, 'the stinking rose'!

Cholesterol Remedy

Compounds in garlic causes blood clots to dissolve more quickly and improve blood fluidity. Studies show that garlic contains hydrogen sulfide, which interacts with the red blood cells and helps the vessels and capillaries to relax. This in turns lowers the blood pressure. It contains peptide which prevents blood pressure from raising.

It has also shown to lower cholesterol levels. Garlic decoction or a few cloves of garlic in food is an excellent cardiac supplement. Read other Cholesterol Home Remedies.  (+ info)

what if a person has no peristalsis movement in the gastrointestinal tract? what kind of complications?

aslo.. can someone help me compare and contrast oxidative muscle fbers with glycolytic muscle fibers relative to their structure and metabolic characteristics..

im working on a take home test and i cannot find either of these.. any help would be greatly appreciated.. and ten points awarded! thanks!
----------

I will deal with peristalsis here:

Peristalsis is the rhythmic contractions of the involuntary, smooth muscles of (in this case as peristalsis happens in many places in the body) the intestinal tract.
If peristalsis fails in the small bowel, and obstruction forms and this can be fatal. This can occur due to spontaneous twisting or loss of innervation due to trauma from an accident or a fall.
If this occurs in the large bowel and an obstruction develops, chronic constipation and, possibly, a megacolon situation occurs. Good Luck  (+ info)
