What are the causes of excessive gastrointestinal gases?

This makes me uncomfortable during the lectures, sometimes I leave the class because of my belly sounds.
----------

Causes and Treatment of Intestinal Bloating, Intestinal Gas and Flatulence
Any way you pass it, excessive bloating and flatulence are no fun. Flatulence can cause social embarrassment, discomfort and pain when accompanied by intestinal bloating. Find out the causes of excessive flatulence, gas and bloating and learn about treatment strategies.

Swallowed Air

Some people habitually swallow air, a practice referred to as aerophagia. They are usually unaware that they do this, and the cause is often anxiety-related.

The gas swallowed is composed mainly of oxygen and nitrogen. Most of the swallowed oxygen is absorbed by the mucous lining of the gut or is used up by colon bacteria. Very little appears in the flatus.

In contrast, nitrogen is poorly absorbed by the mucous lining and most of the swallowed nitrogen appears in the flatus.

2. Relaxation techniques to reduce anxiety.

3. Avoid lying down after eating. Gas from the stomach passes into the intestines more readily in this position.

Poorly Absorbed Carbohydrates

Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are produced by colon bacteria in the presence of poorly absorbed carbohydrates. If flatulence is accompanied by diarrhea and weight loss, it may indicate a malabsorption disorder such as lactose intolerance or pancreatic insufficiency, and should be evaluated by your primary health care provider.

More common is excess flatulence after eating large amounts of poorly absorbed carbohydrates such as beans or foods that you have a sensitivity to. Common carbohydrate sensitivities include milk, and wheat products.

Treatment Strategies

1. Chew food carefully. Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth. Any work your teeth don't do, your stomach will have to do later.

2. Try an elimination and challenge diet, under the supervision of a health care practitioner. This is a diagnostic diet to help you find out which carbohydrates you may have a sensitivity to.

3. Consult your primary care provider to rule out malabsorption disorder if you are also experiencing weight loss and diarrhea.

Gas and Flatulence After High-Fat Meals

Carbon dioxide is produced in the small intestine when bicarbonate is released to neutralize stomach acid and fat during meals. Eating a high-fat meal can generate a large amount of carbon dioxide, some of which is released as gas.

Treatment Strategies

1. Eat 5 smaller meals instead of three large meals.

2. Avoid high-fat meals. In general, fat intake should be about 30% of total dietary intake and should include plenty of monounsaturated and essential fats. Unhealthy saturated or hydrogenated fats should be limited.

3. Consult your primary care provider to rule out the possibility of fat malabsorption. Signs of fat malabsorption include loose and light-colored stools.

Odorous Flatulence and Gas

Gas that has a strong odor usually results from the metabolism of sulfur-containing proteins and amino acids in the intestines.

Treatment Strategies

1. Chew meat and other protein foods carefully. Avoid excessive protein in your diet.

2. Taking activated charcoal tablets can help to remove the odor.

3. Chronic malodorous gas may be a sign of difficulty digesting protein. Consult a naturopathic doctor or other qualified professional to evaluate your level of stomach acid, pancreatic enzymes, and colonic bacteria.

Eating Foods that Produce Gas

Certain foods are inherently gas-producing. Gas-producing foods include beans, cabbage, onions, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, fluffy wheat products such as bread, apples, peaches, pears, prunes, corn, oats, potatoes, milk, ice cream, and soft cheese.

Foods that produce minimal gas include rice, bananas, citrus, grapes, hard cheese, meat, eggs, peanut butter, non-carbonated beverages, and yogurt made with live bacteria. Medical Disease

When someone has persisting bloating and flatulence, lab tests and x-rays are first conducted to exclude the presence of medical disease. Colorectal cancer often presents with the symptoms of abdomen discomfort and bloating. Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease may have similar symptoms. It is important to remember that gas and bloating are vague symptoms that can be associated with many medical diseases, so consultation with your primary care provider should always be the first step.  (+ info)

A heart patient has suffered from gastrointestinal bleeding due to ibuprofen. What is the right treatment?

My father, the heart patient, suffered from a minor heart attack a month ago. Lately he was prescribed ibuprofen for pain relief. After 3 days of medication (precribed dosage) he suffered from nausea, and blood vomiting. He is in intensive care unit right now. They have cleansed his system via laxatives. Not sure about the extent of damage though. What is the best way of recovery?
----------

ibuprofen is quite a good pain relief medication, but bleeding from the stomach is a known side effect.

your father should be put on other pain relief medication, and even that taken carefully only when necessary.

your dad would require a scope, to see the condition of his stomach after he has reasonably recovered. ideally before he is discharged from the hospital.

he would also reqiure medication to further protect his stomach for some time since he has suffered one episode of bleeding.

on his recovery, as family, make sure he takes his medication, try to give him the best environment to reduce his fears and stress and it is very important that he starts taking all his meals on time.

all the best to your dad. hope he recovers well.  (+ info)

Get to know them better. This is not a task only to be accomplished through dating. The more you get to know him or her, the more you can tell if you like them as a friend or something else. Just talk and do fun activities with the person.
Stop and consider why you like the person. There are many physically attractive and smart people out there. But if you see something beyond that really catches your attention, you've marked this person as unique and probably like them. Why else would they stand out from so many?
Consider how many times you think about the person. If you find yourself thinking about this person several times a day, and they are happy thoughts that possibly make your heart beat faster, then you probably like them.
Think how often you laugh at their jokes etc. When you like someone, you will find yourself laughing at things even if they aren't that funny. This is a natural attempt to make them feel appreciated.
If the one conversation between you and the person is stuck in you head and you cant stop telling people about it. this means it was important to you, and you probably like the person.
Consider how much you try to be near them. If you've planned your walking speed to catch a glimpse of them as many times of the day as possible, there is a good reason for that.
Think about how you feel if you touch him or her, by accident or on purpose. If you're still thinking about brushing shoulders several hours ago in school, then that is a special thought and you probably like them.
If you feel you're ready for a relationship, and are confident enough for a positive response, then just go ahead and ask them out. If you're unsure of their feelings for you, there are several wikihows on how to tell if someone likes you.  (+ info)

Explaining the effect of Activia yogurt in the gastrointestinal tract?

Does anyone know anything about what exactly the probiotics in Activia do in the gastrointestinal tract or the intestinal transit? Do you want to have along total transit time or a short total transit time? I've been reading http://www.activia.us.com/pdf/Act_scientific_summary.pdf?v1 this summary but i can't really figure out exactly what they mean. Thanks!
----------

As claimed, it helps in the maintainance of the intestinal flora necessary for us to function normally. The probiotics help primarily with maintaining regular bowel movement.

People with altered bowel movements are the elderly, on medication (such as antibiotics), sedentary and those with issues with digestion.

A short total transit time will produce diarrhea, while a long transit time will cause constipation. The normal digestion from the mouth to the anus takes from 48 to 72 hours. Anything within this time frame is acceptable.  (+ info)
