What causes gastrointestinal noises on an empty stomach ?

Not hunger noises - not gas noises/pain - just gurgle gurgle - why more noisier some days than others ?
----------

"Overview:
In much of the gastrointestinal tract, smooth muscles contract in sequence to produce a peristaltic wave which forces a ball of food (called bolus while in the esophagus and chyme below the stomach) along the gastrointestinal tract. Peristaltic movement is initiated by circular smooth muscles contracting behind the chewed material to prevent backflow, followed by a contraction of longitudinal smooth muscles which pushes the digested food forward."

I think it osmotically pulls water through membranes. It crosses the blood brain barrier where some others cannot. This is why it also is used to decrease pressure in the cranium.  (+ info)

Does flaxseed oil/evening primrose oil CAUSE gastrointestinal pain and headaches?

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced what I have. Whenever I take flaxseed in any form (oil, whole seeds, powdered), I get this horrible migraine, nerve pain that run across my face and fingers. With primrose oil, I get horrible stomach pains. Does anyone know why this is so? Is it an allergy or something? It's a shame because they are very good oils!! Anyone have the same problem?
----------

I have not heard of anybody experiencing the problems you have with these two supplements. There has to be something in them that you are allergic to. Do not take them anymore. You can try fish oil capsules for the benefits you are looking for.  (+ info)

Why is it that gastrointestinal infections can only be detected by liquid stool samples and NOT vomit?

Just what the question asks really :)
----------

gastrointestinal infections have nothing to do with the stomach, but can affect it (vomiting)
when you're sick with a stomach virus/infection, it affects the small intestine, causing it to swell. which would cause you to have diarrhea, vomiting, or both.  (+ info)

What are the investigations that must be done for upper GIT gastrointestinal case?

just out lines.
----------

A Gastroscopy first off.
Biopsy during Gastroscopy.
These are both done under sedation.

A Baruim meal x-ray.
A Nuclear film wth swallow. Is an option. Very expensive but shows up things really well.
Awake and at X-ray department.

Manamotry test. But that's only to test the peristelsis co-ordination and LES pressure in the oesphagus.
24Ph test for acid reflux.
Gastro specialist ward or centre.

It all depends on what your symptoms are and/or what they are looking for?  (+ info)

Anyone here ever undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or know of the experience of someone who has?

It is of the type where rubber bands are used in case of excessive internal bleeding.Thanking you, in anticipation.
Also hemachromatosis..but Fe stabilised after 6 weeks of 'harvesting'..bleed and bruise easily.. peg-interferon/ribivirin treatment for 6 months previously..not successful..12 months this time. Thanks for your comments.

You may be talking about banding of esophageal varices. The big dilated blood vessels in the esophagus(food tube) that sometimes form in alcoholics or those with liver disease. The application of these bands helps prevent massive bleeding from those blood vessels. They are only used with grade 2 or 3 varices. Is this what you mean??  (+ info)

When can a tumor be non-cellular or non-neoplastic? And how can some neoplasms be cell free?

So basically, I've got a bio midterm tomorrow, and so in the process of studying, I realized I completely don't get that! Even my bio friends are like, what....? So if ANYONE can help us out here, that would be fantastic! Thanks!
----------

The word tumor is defined (in Answers.com) as "An abnormal growth of tissue resulting from uncontrolled, progressive multiplication of cells and serving no physiological function; a neoplasm." So your teacher is playing with semantics here.

The only way a "mass" could be non-cellular would be if it were cystic - - a contained area of fluid. We see this with some ovarian tumors which may be benign or malignant. The benign ones are ovarian serous cystadenomas or mucinous cystadenomas which can be quite large tumor masses. These do contain cells however in the membranous sacs surrounding the fluid
