What's the difference between hypertrophy and gaining muscular strength?

Hypertrophy is the gaining of muscular size. There are two kinds of hypertrophy, sarcoplasmic and myofibrilar.

Myofibrillar is when your muscle fibers increase in number. This is one way you gain strength. This is best gained through lifting moderately heavy weights for sufficient volume, Ex 5sets of 5reps.

Sarcoplasmic is when the volume of fluid in muscle cells increases, this does NOT increase strength. This is best gained throught high reps sets, Ex, 2sets of 20.

There four factors in strength. Your nervous system, muscular size, technique and leverages.

A person isn't actually able to use all of their muscle. As you train your nervous becomes better at recruiting muscle fibers, so you can use a greater percentage of them. This is best trained by lifting weights over 80% of your max.

Greater muscular size, or specifically the cross sectional volume of your muscle fibers also increases strength. This is best trained throught volume at heavier weights.

Then there's technique. Practicing better lifting techniqe helps you lift more weight. Compare how powerlifters bench to how your average lifter benches. The bench is just an example, this applies to all lifts, although it's more the case with complicated ones.

Then there's leverages. You can't change leverages, because it's your skeletal system and how it effects your lifting. For example, someone with short legs and long arms will have and advantage deadlifting. Why? because they can start the lift more upright, and don't have to move the weight as far.  (+ info)

The name was very similiar and what do they to in terms of muscle building.
There is another type that sounds similar..what are the differences?

Are there any drawbacks to cardiac hypertrophy, or getting a big heart, from exercise?

I was extremely sedentary and started running/jogging recently. I noticed that my resting heart rate really went down in just one month.
----------

Who gave you the idea that exercise will give you cardiac hypertrophy or a big heart? No. Exercise will not do any harm to your heart unless you have some problem in your heart in the first place. It is normal for the resting heart rate to come down if you are exercising. It is a good sign and it shows that your heart is getting more healthy.
Don't worry and continue your exercise. But if you are feeling too much breathlessness or palpitation then you can have a check up with your GP. Other wise enjoy healthy living and exercise daily.  (+ info)

Left ventricular hypertrophy with qrs widening and st elevation present in anterior leads. What does this mean?

, I hade an ekg done on 11/09/09 and this was the result. I have since had to have a stress test but have not received the results. Can anyone shed some light on this for me ? Thank You !
----------

Your cardiologist ordered the stress test because the electrical measurements on the electrocardiogram can often mislead physicians in diagnosing the heart condition of left ventricular hypertrophy. Such a qrs waveform widening is a sign of left ventricular hypertrophy, but other screening tests should be done before a definitive conclusion can be made. So, unfortunately you will have to wait for the stress test results and your cardiologist's interpretation of the tests. Best of luck to you.  (+ info)

Is it possible for a 19 year old male to have Benign Prostratic hypertrophy?

Prostate problems that cause straining to urinate (every time) and that causes him to sweat from pushing so hard) and frequent urination. He has all the symptoms of it. Stones have been ruled out as well as any type of infection. Thanks for any help.

Yes he will be going to the doctor next week. I just wanted to see what I could find out on here to ease his mind a little.
----------

Anything is possible. But a trip to the urologist will be his best bet to figure it out.  (+ info)

What is the difference between hyperplasia and hypertrophy?

Hyperplasia (or "hypergenesis") is a general term for an increase in the number of the cells of an organ or tissue causing it to increase in size. It may be due to any number of causes including (but not limited to) increased demand, chronic inflammatory response, hormonal dysfunctions, or neoplasia.

Hypertrophy is the increase of the size of an organ. It should be distinguished from hyperplasia which occurs due to cell division; hypertrophy occurs due to an increase in cell size rather than division. It is most commonly seen in muscle that has been actively stimulated, the most well-known method being exercise.  (+ info)

Can bodyweight exercises with added weight have hypertrophy/bodybuilding effects?

If I add extra weight to my exercises, such as a backpack to pushups/pullups and overload my muscle to reps of like 8-12, can it give me large mass like weights or similar?
----------

Yes it can. Try to aim for a little lower reps if you can though. Add enough weight so you can only do 5-8 reps. To build muscle you need to lift really heavy weights. If it's easy, it's not working.  (+ info)
