Has the recession affected people’s use of medicines – prescription and over the counter?

Hello, I am a 3rd year Pharmacy student just starting my research project and my question is related to my title. I just thought I would set this up to get some feedback which I am hoping will give me a few ideas or maybe an audience for my final questionnaire. I would be extremely grateful for any feedback on the question. Has the recession affected your use of medicines? Do you get all the items on your prescription? Thank you in advance!
----------

My niece is 24 and has a 10 month old baby she tries not to see the GP if she is ill as she cannot afford the prescription charges at over £7 per item. The last time she went my mother{her grandmother}paid ,a pensioner as there were 3 items so it was over £20.  (+ info)

How can I minimize gum recession and teeth erosion with a labret?

I just had my lip pierced and I was reading a lot of stories about gum recession and teeth erosion caused by the jewelery. I was wondering how can I avoid this or at least minimize it. Thank you.
I just took it out. Thank you very much for your replies. I think I will just get more tattoos done :p
----------

I've had my lip pierced twice and I've had my tongue pierced. As someone with extensive piercing and extensive dental work, I advise you to just not get it done.

At the time I got my lip pierced, I had braces, and so there wasn't really a problem. Anywhere you get your labret done is going to come in contact with your teeth and / or gums, and because the metal / plastic of the jewelry is not as soft as your lip, you are going to cause some irritation. The extent really varies, depending on how you eat, talk, etc.

When I got my tongue done, I'd had my braces removed and had the bar behind my teeth from a permanent retainer, and it remained there until a car accident knocked the retainer out. With the removal of the braces and the loss of the permanent retainer, there was nothing protecting my teeth and gums from the jewelry.

So what happened? The gum around the base of a bridge was irritated to the point that it slightly receded, revealing the root surface of the tooth, and I am now considering pulling the whole apparatus and having a bridge implanted, at the cost of $3000-$6000 if I'm lucky.

I also heard from one of my professors last year that the metal can cause a reaction in your mouth that will erode your teeth over time (through your saliva), without even coming into contact with them.

Please do not get this done. I know it can seem attractive, but don't. These piercings are becoming increasingly more popular, and although I got mine done before the trend got started and everybody jumped on the bandwagon, I can see the allure. Your teeth are too essential to your health to risk them. Get a tattoo, get your eyebrow pierced, get your nipple pierced, anything but something in your mouth.

I don't want you to think I'm some uptight person telling you not to deface yourself; I've had more than 30 piercings and I've got some tattoos. I've been known to have purple hair. But, from personal experience, the decoration is NOT worth it.  (+ info)

How to stay positive during a recession?

How do you stay positive during a recession. I feel cheated. I went to University thinking that I'd have more opportunities and after all the hard work, I've seen nothing of the like since graduating this summer. I'm not a snob and I'm prepared to start at the bottom and work my way up. I want the chance, I need the opportunity. I'm young, energetic, enthusiastic and willing.
----------

you just listed the BEST qualities "young, energetic, enthusiastic and willing+prepared and looking for opportunity" which is very important for being successful, and do you know what,I know that you are about to get what you are looking for, don't listen anybody, what they say, that a lot of people have degrees and don't have jobs, but they don't have ingredients for achieving what they want like you have, just keep believing, keep going forward, and keep looking for opportunities and you will succeed,Good Luck!  (+ info)

With the house market collapsing, and the rising gas prices(which are effecting the cost of food and other goods) it looks like we have nowhere to go but down. alright, people are buying less, so companies have less money to pay employees with, so people earn less money and buy even less. next stores begin to go out of business, more people lose their jobs, the reason prices go down is because these companies are losing so much money that they cannot afford to raise prices or even keep prices at their previous rate. The reason for this is because once somebody doesn't NEED something, and they can't afford it, they won't buy it, so stores have to make things more affordable. Frankly if people exercised some self control and showed some personal responsibility (like not buying a house they knew they couldn't afford), they would be better prepared for situations like we are now experiencing. I have changed absolutely nothing in my daily life because of the recession. But those "spenders" should stop buying gucci handbags and crocs and start focusing on if they will be fed 5 years from now. I found a new forum http://fightagainstrecession.com/index.php that will surely help you address your worry over the global recession, vent about financial stuff and share money-saving tips.  (+ info)

What are your biggest concerns about the state of the economy/recession?

What are the causes and effects of the current recession on your life's and life outlook in California?

What are the causes and effects of the current recession on your life's and life outlook in California?

Is the government of California solving the crisis or causing it to deepen?
----------

We live in Southern California.

Well, my husband has been out of work since August 2007 and has had no income. He just got a job. He started looking out of state and starts his new job in Nevada in August.

It will be hard to be apart from him.

I work for a government contractor and my program was cut, so I lost my job too. However, my company (thank God) found another position for me within the company with another division and I start sometime in August and it is a promotion for me.

We lost 2 cars because we could not pay for them. We have 1 car between us (which is old and paid for at least), and when he goes to Nevada he will have to rent the car there, plus get hotel and food.

We have no credit cards.

My Mom lives with us. We have a cat and dog. I need to have surgery but I am putting it off because we are waiting to see what happens with his job. They say it might take 4 months for me to recover.

We have no money in any of our accounts.

The IRS just took 100 percent of my paycheck and we are trying to figure out what to do since we use my money for food, gas, medicine and everything else.

We are thinking of doing bankruptcy just to keep my paycheck. When he starts earning again it will help. However, he is behind in IRS stuff, child support, student loans, etc., so we might be able to keep a couple of hundred dollars of the check, if that.

We live paycheck to paycheck, not knowing if we should get the electricity cut off or buy medicine for my Mom.

We don't qualify for any programs because we make too much money with my income.

Otherwise, we are OK. We have a roof over our heads (for now - we can't pay September rent since I don't get paid), and we have each other. We are a family and we will get by somehow.

Thank goodness my husband got a job. I don't think he gets paid for a while, but it will help a lot.

I am trying to complete my education, but it is hard.

I have only been living in California since 2006, but I notice they don't have much property tax on homes or cars (I come from Virginia where these were huge ways for the local government to raise money for much needed things) which they could really use here. Since they can't raise money that way, they are having to cut all kinds of things, which is sad.

It has caused tons of stress on our family.

We get by somehow ---- day by day. I am sure there are people who are worse off than we are.  (+ info)

How much does grafting cost? Should it be done in children who have gum recession b/c of braces?

I have braces but i dont know if grafting is appropriate for people my age. I have gum recession due to my braces. How much does it cost?
----------

I don't know about the cost but I work for an orthodontist and we refer young patients for grafts all of the time. Just ask your orthodontist or dentist if they think it is something you should have done!  (+ info)

What is gum recession and periodontal pockets?

I've read about it but do the gums recede between your teeth or do they recede above and below the teeth. Same thing with the the pockets. Where are they and how do I know if I have them. I was at the dentist a month ago, and he said my gums were inflamed but he would have told me if I had recession or pockets around my teeth right?
----------

My mother is a dental assistant first off...but gum recession can some from actually brushing your teeth too hard or not flossing enough. The gum line recedes away from the tooth/teeth and sags which forms the periodontal pockets that you're talking about which can lead to periodontal disease. You would know if you had them because the dentist would surely tell you. He would also mention to you about the recession of your gums.  (+ info)

How has the recession effected your family?

How has the recession effected your family? What are you doing to help your family and others.

We are
-Bargain Shopping, hitting stores like TJMaxx
-Being smart. My backpack was in great shape so I am using it again
-Cutting down on bills by saving electricity

It hasn't impacted our family, but we want to save even more if it does. (:
----------

I think I can honestly say that we haven't been effected by the recession. That being said, our spending habits were always different from other peoples. We barely every eat/ate out, and I think my parents have always been wise with their money, so when the recession hit, we didn't have to make any changes. I know how fortunate I am, and every weekend I volunteer at the food bank to try and help out. My dad's a doctor and every Friday he sets up a free clinic for people who can't afford healthcare.  (+ info)
