What's the difference between gout and arthritis?

Could someone please explain the main difference(s) between Gout and Arthritis. My late father had Gout, which mainly affected his knees, and was always getting grouchy when people claimed he was arthritic, saying it was totally different.

Also, as his 27 year old son, I am concerned that I am going to get it, or already have gout. Bearing in mind that my father never drank port, or any of the other cliches, any suggestions as to how I could put it off as long as possible?
----------

An Uncle (by marriage) had gout. It would swell up in his feet
and some days he had to stay in bed because it was so bad.
He came from a well-to-do family, so it may have something
to do with it. He ate and drank well all his life, and loved
kidneys, oxtail, pigs trotters etc. If you refrain from doing
what my Uncle did, you should be OK.

Arthritis is the cartilage wearing away. A lot of people have
it, and they mostly have it in their arms, tho' some have it
in their legs.  (+ info)

How do I prevent a painful gout while taking a gout-inducing drug called Ethambutol for TB?

How do I prevent a painful gout while taking a gout-inducing drug called Ethambutol for TB? I've taken Ethambutol for 5 weeks now, and have this severe gout pain for 5 weeks straight. What medicines should I take as an alternative to fight TB without inducing uric acid that caused gout?
----------

I wish I knew what meds you could take to fight TB without giving your body excess uric acid (or keeping your body from getting rid of it).

To fight gout, best website I’ve found so far: www.best-gout-remedies.com.

For gout attacks, indomethacine and/ or colchicine. You'll need scripts from your dr. for these.

Also, do these things daily: drink lots of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight, each day. Once or twice a day, sip on 8 oz of water mixed with 1/2 tsp of baking soda. Helps the body be more alkaline (opposite of acidic) and get rid of uric acid.

Take allopurinol every day. Very inexpensive and no side effects, you’ll need a script for this. Helps the body get rid of uric acid.

Take celery seed pills. These may help the liver not to create so much uric acid. For diet, stay away from things that dehydrate the body, like beer and coffee. Don't eat organ meats, high fructose corn syrup. Avoid beer; red wine occasionally is ok. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, cottage cheese, sour cream, plain yogurt in smoothies mixed with orange juice and fruit. Drink fruit juices that are 100% juice, V8 VFusion is my favorite, it comes in many flavors.

Educate yourself on foods that are high in purines, avoid these foods as the body turns purines into uric acid.

Good luck to you!  (+ info)

What will happen if Gout is left untreated? Or if the person with gout does not stop their alcohol intake?

They are on an acute gout medication for the onset of a flair up but refuses to stop drinking.
----------

The medication should help stop the gout attack. The alcohol causes the body to produce more uric acid. This makes it harder for the gout medication to work.

The alcohol consumption in most people will make the gout attacks more frequent.

While it is best if they limit their drinking to no more than one drink a day, some people just are not going to do this. There is still plenty they can do to control their gout. Here is a link to more gout information.

what is the best way to control gout problem?

I know the drugs used to cure accute attack and to lower uric acid, but I really need to know the food that must be avoided since there are many versions (about the food). What is the suggested diet for gout patients.
----------

What Should You Eat when you are diagnosed with gout?

Dietary restrictions suggest what people should not eat, but what should people eat? What foods will help control gout attacks? The American Medical Association recommends the following dietary guidelines for people with gout, advising them to eat a diet:

high in complex carbohydrates (fiber-rich whole grains, fruits, and vegetables)

low in protein (15% of calories and sources should be soy, lean meats, or poultry)

no more than 30% of calories in fat (with only 10% animal fats)

Recommended Foods To Eat:

Fresh cherries, strawberries, blueberries, and other red-blue berries
Bananas
Celery
Tomatoes
Vegetables including kale, cabbage, parsley, green-leafy vegetables
Foods high in bromelain (pineapple)
Foods high in vitamin C (red cabbage, red bell peppers, tangerines, mandarins, oranges, potatoes)
Drink fruit juices and purified water (8 glasses of water per day)
Low-fat dairy products
Complex carbohydrates (breads, cereals, pasta, rice, as well as aforementioned vegetables and fruits)
Chocolate, cocoa
Coffee, tea
Carbonated beverages
Essential fatty acids (tuna and salmon, flaxseed, nuts, seeds)
Tofu, although a legume and made from soybeans, may be a better choice than meat

Foods considered moderately high in purines but which may not raise the risk of gout include: asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, peas, spinach, whole grain breads and cereals, chicken, duck, ham, turkey, kidney and lima beans. It is important to remember that purines are found in all protein foods. All sources of purines should not be eliminated.  (+ info)

How can I get rid of soreness from gout?

I have been suffering from painful gout in my knee that has migrated down to my ankle for about a month now. I've tried strawberries, and I am currently drinking cherry juice in hopes of getting rid of this. I'd rather not deal with the side effects of prescription remedies that have been suggested to me. I am a 51-year old male and I currently weigh more than the recommended weight for my height.

Hi, 38yr old male battling gout for 13yrs, doc says hereditary mainly. Two BLT's in a day and I'm on the sickening med's the next day...colchricine. You name the med I've been on it. Once the crystal's settle in aparticular area, the damage is done. NSAIDS are your best bet for pain, my attacks are usually severe enough for injections of Torodol & Decadron at the doc's office. As far as natural remediess, I've found dark cherry extract {capsules only} works. Juice has too many unwanted calories and sugars. Allopurinol should be taken daily, perscribed by doctor. I'm up to 900mg a day to maintain a 5-6 uric acid count. Be warned continous gout attacks can cause lumps of tissue forming on your elbows, knees , ankles, and anywhere else it decides to go. I don't know how serious your attacks are, but I don't know of anyone who has it as bad as I do. My worse case scenario, I had to have my left knee operated on to remove a painful bursitis on the kneecap. 13 staples north to south. If I can be of any assistance let me know. Jeffrey  (+ info)

What is the best treatment for gout and asteoarthritis?

I am a gout patient. I like to know what are alternatives to traditional medication which could treat gout diseases.

Many Thanks and Have a Nice
----------

If you're a gout patient, then it's assumed that you're already knowledgeable about excessive bodily production of uric acid and the necessity to reduce dietary purines, so I won't discuss those points.

Get more cherries in your diet, but stay away from those cheap canned or jarred cherries. Fresh or frozen are best. Juice concentrate might be OK, but its pasteurization destroys some of its benefricial flavonoids, which supposedly lower uric acid and reduce inflammation. Blueberries and blackberries may possibly provide the same benefit.

Drink 10-12 glasses per day of water, in order to help flush out uric acid crystals.

Cut back or eliminate alcohol consumption, because it interferes with the removal of uric acid from the body.

Exposure to lead can cause gout. So have your doctor test your system for excessive lead levels. Metallic toxins can be removed from the body with a number of naturopathic/alternative remedies . Ask your doctor about chelation therapy treatments (usually via EDTA as chelator) as an alternative treatment for heavy metal removal. Calcium citrate supplements and calcium rich foods help to eliminate heavy metals. Dairy products almonds, broccoli, collards, kale, legumes, oranges, sesame seeds, and tofu are rich in calcium. Also try to eat as many chlorophyll-rich dark greens as possible to help remove heavy metals from your body. Sodium alginate from seaweeds and apple cider vinegar are known to bind heavy metals. Supplementation with the mineral selenium is another way to reduce heavy metal load. Sulfur rich vegetables such as onions and garlic help to remove heavy metals from the body too. Sulfur is also found in dairy products; most concentrated in whey protein. A cheap and convenient form of sulfur is the supplement MSM, which provides a second benefit of antiinflammation.

To reduce painful symptoms, you should definitely be on an anti-inflammatory diet supplemented with various anti-inflammatory agents.

Anti-inflammatory whole foods :

cabbage, ginger, basil, strawberry, black tea, blueberry, turmeric, rosemary, clove, cinnamon, sarsaparilla, citrus fruits, pineapple, cold ocean water fish (especially wild sockeye salmon), garlic, flax seeds, red onion, brocolli, red apple

Anti-inflammatory supplements :

bromelain, citrus bioflavonoids (often come with premium vitamin C tablets), MSM, S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe), alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, quercetin, astaxanthin, silymarin

Anti-inflammatory herbal extracts :

milk thistle, boswellia, gugulipids, fish oil, high lignan flax seed oil (both ALA and lignan), blue-green algae such as spirulina, borage seed oil, black currant oil, evening primrose seed oil, yarrow, olive leaf, marshmallow, fennel fruit extract, pau d'arco, hawthorn, white willow bark, licorice root, and cat's claw  (+ info)

What are some good treatment options for gout?

I've had battles with gout off and on for a couple of years. I don't know why but the attacks always get worse when the weather warms up even a little bit. I never have an attack in the winter. I quit drinking so that should help. I haven't seen anything about drinking soda but I swear that when I drink soda my gout gets real bad. I can't take antiinflammatory drugs and this other medicine I've taken in the past takes the pain away but makes me sicker than a dog. The only thing that seems to help is cherry juice but I can only find it at the health food store for like $16 and it only lasts a couple of weeks. The cababage leaf thing was nasty and didn't do anything for my foot. I've had gout so bad I couldn't even walk from my car to the pharmacy to get my medicine. My question is what else works? Do I have to drink the actual cherry juice or could I take some sort of capsule? If you've had gout what has worked for you to prevent or cure the symptoms?
----------

I wrote this answer in a previous question :
I use all of the following remedies.
But curently I use the Apple Cider Vinegar and regular celery intake as per below.

Cherry juice can work but it is full of sugar.
Eat fresh cherries.
I have a section in my Gout Aware site
http://www.gout-aware.com

Apple Cider Vinegar : 1 x tablespoon mixed with a table spoon of filtered water, make sure it is organic with "Mother" still in it , add honey to taste and take about an hour after a meal 3 times a day..this will regulate your pH levels and reduce them...clean your teeth also after using this as it stains..then after an attack reduce this to once a day.
The vinegar also helps weight control.

Drink Plenty of water ( filtered) 2 litres a day. This in its self can cease Gouty activity.

Occasionally use Baking Soda ( small amounts only and not long term due to its salt content, 1 x teaspoon with a large glass of water only in the beginning of an attack )

Celery extract and celery oil blends. ( every day )
I use 3mg celery extract with 2 mls celery oil..

always seek a medical opinion before starting any low purine diet or taking any herb or medicine.
check your medicines for side effects as there are many for any gout pills supplied by a doctor or health practitioner  (+ info)

How long does it take for gout in the foot to heal?

My uncle just got a gout attack in his foot and he has to go on a week-long hiking trip in exactly one week. He's leading the trip, so he can't really back out. Is it possible for him to be back on his feet within one week?
