why is it harder to treat protozoan and fungal infections compared to bacterial infections?

why is it harder to treat protozoan and fungal infections compared to bacterial infections?
----------

Bacteria are "prokaryotes"
While animals(inc humans), fungi and protozoa are all "eukaryotes"
There are major differences in the way these two type of cells are organised and operated. These means that some chemicals which are highly toxic to bacterial "prokaryotic" cells have little or no toxic effect on Human "eukaryotic" cells .Antibiotic can be thought of as selective poisons which only harm bacteria .Fungal and protozoan cell are much more similar to human cells and so there are fewer chemicals which are toxic to them without being toxic to the host's cells as well  (+ info)

Do different kinds of antibiotics tend to clear most bacterial infections?

I am in a foreign country and i recently contracted a vaginal bacterial infection. I personally do not want to go to a doctor here and have them examine me, and have a box of antibiotics that is made for upper respiratory tract infections. If I take these will it clear up the problem?
----------

not necessarily. often, when you go to the doctor, they culture, or grow, the bacteria so that they can determine which antibiotic will be most effective in resolving your infection. also, you may not have enough antibiotic to completely resolve your illness and then it will come roaring back. why worry about seeing a doc in a foreign country? most of the docs in the US are from a foreign country.  (+ info)

Can Viral and Bacterial infections work as a sort of team in the body?

If someone has a bacterial and viral infection at the same time and recieves drugs for the bacterial infection only.As the bacterial symptoms disappear so too can the viral symptoms . Can one be somehow linked to the other?
----------

Viruses and bacteria are different life form, its like comparing a monkey and a goat. They have similarities but are different species.
It is possible to have both a virus and a bacterial infection at the same time but antibiotics will only work on the bacteria. they would have no effect on the viral infection. With the bacterial infectured treated the patient woiuld still show symptoms of the viral infection. Viral infections are usually less severe and self limiting;  (+ info)

If gram positive and gram negative cells both show up on a bacteria smear how does a Dr determine which is?

How does the Dr determine which is causing the illness and treatment. Gram positive and gram negative are both treated differently.
Gram positive is purple, gram negative pinkish, but if both are present on the smear, which one is causing the illness. Penicillin type drugs are used on gram positive because it destroys the cell wall. A different type drug is used on gram negative.
----------

If both were present in significant amounts, there's no way to know. You have to treat both with antibiotics based on the sensitivities from the lab.  (+ info)

Can being anemic cause bacterial infections?

I have heavy periods and am anemic. I was curious if having low iron can cause bacterial infections. Thanks.
I know I'm anemic from my doctor. He told me it was from my period.
----------

Generally not.

Anaemia tends to cause lethargy and in extreme cases may cause chest pains and trouble with your heart.

You would not be prone to bacterial infections unless your white cell count was low, or if your white blood cells (the infection fighting cells) were abnormal.  (+ info)

How do you get bacterial infections?

what is a bacterial infection, and do people catch them through dirty surfaces?
----------

Bacteria are everywhere, everyone has some bacteria living on their skin and in their gut. Our skin does a really marvelous job of keeping bacteria out of the inside of our bodies. The first thing that usually happens in a bacterial infection is that you have to have a cut or wound of some kind. The next thing is that bacteria have to enter the wound, this can be in the form of dirt or almost any kind of debris like dust. Once the bacteria are in the wound they begin to multiply and die, the dead bacteria attract white blood cells to the site, the white blood cells kill the bacteria and accumulate at the site, you now have a pussy bacterial infection.  (+ info)
